Yeah, and if I'm ever at the crossroads
and start feeling mixed signals like Morse code My soul start to grow colder than the North Pole I try to focus on the hole of where the torch goes In the tradition of these legendary sports pros As far as I can see, I've made it to the threshold Lord knows I've waited for this a lifetime And I'm an icon when I let my light shine Shine bright as an example of a champion Taking the advantage, never copping out or cancelling Burn like a chariot, learn how to carry it Maverick, always above and beyond average Fuel to the flame that I train with and travel with Something in my eyes say I'm so close to having the prize I realise I'm supposed to reach for the skies Never let somebody try to tell you otherwise |
"99 Problems" - Jay-Z
The cleverly constructed lyrics below show the frustration of racial profiling so well! This rap song impressed me as soon as I heard it because the song makes me imagine clearly how it feels to be seen as guilty until proven innocent. The song gives me just what I like: meaningful lyrics with a compelling storyline and an "I'm not going to take your crap" attitude. Of course the irony is that the song lyrics may have been based on a true story in which there really *were* drugs in the car! So, the police officer's suspicions were justified. However, civil rights are civil rights and they apply to everyone. From Wikipedia: "Jay-Z wrote that in 1994 he was pulled over by police while carrying cocaine in a secret compartment in his sunroof. Jay-Z refused to let the police search the car and the police called for the drug sniffing dogs. However, the dogs never showed up and the police had to let Jay-Z go. Moments after he drove away, he wrote that he saw a police car with the dogs drive by." Apparently, the "bitch" in the song refers to the police dog :): "The chorus 'If you're having girl problems, I feel bad for you son/I've got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one' was defined in Jay-Z's book, Decoded, as referring to a police dog." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_Problems * * * * * The year is ninety-four, in my trunk is raw In my rear view mirror is the mother****in' law Got two choices y'all, pull over the car or Bounce on the Devil, put the pedal to the floor And I ain't tryin' to see no highway chase with Jake Plus I got a few dollars, I can fight the case So I pull over to the side of the road Son do you know why I'm stoppin' you for? 'Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hat's real low Or do I look like a mind reader sir? I don't know Am I under arrest or should I guess some mo'? Well you was doin fifty-five in the fifty-four (<-- This line especially shows the injustice of the situation. A great line!) License and registration and step out of the car Are you carryin' a weapon on you? I know a lot of you are I ain't steppin' out of ****, all my papers legit Well do you mind if I look around the car a little bit? Well my glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk in the back And I know my rights, so you gon' need a warrant for that (<-- Oooo! Defending his rights! I like that.) Aren't you sharp as a tack, you should try out For lawyer or somethin', somebody important or somethin' Child I ain't passed the bar, but I know a little bit Enough that you won't illegally search my **** (<-- Knowledge IS power. This is another great line in the song.) Well we'll see how smart you are when the canine comes I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one Jay z - 99 problems lyrics - YouTube |

Black Thoughts Verse in "Tip The Scale"
Yo, I’m always early I never take off cause I got a job Rob Peter to pay Paul Now I realize it’s the winner that takes all Do what I gotta do because I can’t take loss Picture me living life as if I’m some animal That consumes its own dreams like I’m a cannibal I won’t accept failure unless it’s mechanical But still the alcohol mixed with the botanical I guess I be referred to the owners manual full of loaners Full of all the homeless throwaways and the stoners Soldiers of the streets with 8th grade diplomas And the world awaiting their shoulders as a bonus Look, let he without sin live without sin Until then, I’ll be doing dirty jobs like swamp men Counting the faces of those that might have been It’s like living that life but I won’t live that life again |
[Verse 3]
Sometimes I look in a mirror and ask myself Am I really scared of passing away If it's today I hope I hear a Cry out from heaven so loud it can water down a demon With the holy ghost till it drown in the blood of Jesus I wrote some raps that make sure that my lifeline Rake in the cent of a reaper, ensuring that my allegiance With the other side may come soon And if I'm doomed, may the wound Help me mother be blessed for many moons I suffer a lot And every day the glass mirror get tougher to watch I tie my stomach in knots And I'm sure not why I'm infatuated with death My imagination is surely an aggravation of threats That can come about Cause the tongue is mighty powerful And I can name a list of your favorites that probably vouch Maybe cause I'm dreamer and sleep is the cousin of death Really stuck in the scheme of, wondering whem I'mma rest And you're right, your brother was a brother to me And your sister's situation was the one that put me In a direction to speak of something that's realer than the TV screen By any means, wasn't trying to offend or come between Her personal life, I was like "it need to be told Cursing the life of 20 generations after her" so Exactly would have happened if I hadn't continued rappin Or steady being distracted by money drugs and four Fives, I count lives all on these songs Look at the weak and cry, pray one day you'll be strong Fighting for your rights, even when you're wrong And hope that at least one of you sing about me when I'm gone Now am I worth it? Did I put enough work in? Kendrick Lamar-Sing About Me #goodkidmaadcity |
This one always made me believe I can make it!
/Lupe Fiasco - Hip-Hop Saved My Life/ He said, “I write what I see Write to make it right, don't like where I be” I'd like to make it light the sights on TV Quite the great life, so nice and easy See, now you can still die from that But it's better than not being alive from straps Agree, a Mead notebook and a bic that click When it's pushed in a whack ass beat That's a track that's weak, that he got last week 'Cause everybody in the store's like that's that heat A bass heavy medley, with a sample from the 70's With a screwed up hook that went, 'Stack That Cheese' Somethin', somethin', somethin', 'Stack That Cheese' Mother, sister, cousin, 'Stack That Cheese' He couldn't think of nothin', 'Stack That Cheese' He turns down the beat, writer's block impedes Cryin' from the next room, a baby in need Of some Pampers and some food and place to sleep That, plus a black Cadillac on D's Is what keep 'em on track to be a great Emcee, yea |
Easily one of my all time favorite rap songs. Amazing beat and very, very good lyrics. I know it's pick a verse... but I can't!
T-Electronique- Faust vs Dalek Spoiler for T-Electronique:
They walk a path that's not mine, never was or ever will be. Fulfilling prophecies hobble knees of MC's Set to breath the rich air of mediocrity And so ironically you seek to whisper from the poison lips of Socrates I watch with these sad and tired eyes If I were blind perhaps then I'd know of sunsets. As it stands I hate myself more than public. Prose and poetry set to drown in murky sonnets Crucify the honest least they beg to play the minstrel Divide by 5th harmonic Just to keep it simple Basics of my breath only known to my people Speak in paradox seems to sullen minds of feeble Retrieve the core text and proceed to feast with equals Your church steeples only set more eyes on Ra Confusion on your face when I call my brothers god Grasp open fist with right Met with a solemn nod First signs of rain i plant these seeds in fertile soil Anoint scarred wrists with remnants of ancient oils. And since then I felt more than never Placed brittle faith on filthy tongue slowly severed by words Left interred as exposed souls erode though I'm told to expect that fate Human has no fate (With Fist that knows pain) Await with rusted blade to split this right wrist Fractured lip spits blind truth into life's abyss. Lifted spirits only crash to concrete Greet enemies with pounds Brethren with horrid sounds Resonating what we wrote You foster false hope To those who tie noose with stale rope Broke stride with strong neck In last attempts to gain respect Melanin the constant threat Yet we easily forget Where we are, what we are Are by far foreign concepts Somewhere between the seeds of Gods and Monsters Quite a thought to ponder Ancient treasures squandered by greed that bleeds from all veins Humanity maintains false histories to breath Breed lies in ink to infect truth written Given live makes ironic alter Tarnished martyr polished words only to be blurred When I once tried to watch And irony is lost True knowledge only comes at too high a cost And since then I felt more than never Placed brittle faith on filthy tongue slowly severed by words Left interred as exposed souls erode though I'm told to expect that fate Human has no fate |

How 'bout some Cage?
Verse 3 from "Among the Sleep" I open up my eyes to get cracked in the face Six times, while I'm asked for combos to a safe My wife on the couch, dying, raped, in shock While the gunmen argue on where to take the yacht Assuming I'm rich Playboy bitch My own boat And if I don't start speaking I'mma lose my throat They start chumming the water with my dead ho and laugh Force me to see great whites snapped on the lower half Locked off my arm, do it in, no guns to shoot Think of 3 past deaths and find an escape route All I have to do is wake up, lift the mast And get shot off the boat and my back to get whipped in half I wake up screamin' With a shotgun in church, feenin' To kill myself, but I don't know if I'm still dreamin' 50-50 chance I'mma die and go straight up Or straight to hell, either ****in' way I'mma wake up! |
Aesop Rock - Battery
Yo change the fuckin channel I burn a Coma candle When the flame fades, consider my flatline a soldier's sample We them cats talkin noise behind that New York trash heap Where the stench of commuter briefcase replaces a bad sleep And it's, worker zig-zagers versus piggy badge flashers Training Generation Fallout Waterfall bricklayer pincushion crawl out There's smoke in my iris But I painted a sunny day on the insides of my eyelids So I'm ready now (What you ready for?) I'm ready for life in this city And my wings have grown almost enough to lift me I'm a dinosaur with Jones Beach in my hourglass Passing the time with serial killer coloringbooks and bags of marbles Don't tell me you ain't the droid that held the match to the charcoals Don't tell me Lucifer and God don't carpool (This is our school) I'm not trying to graduate to life at the curse on the lounge barstool Head in a jar on the desk, feet dangling in a shark pool (Man please) Man please My name stands for my being And my being stands for the woman who stood And braved the storm could raise this evening (Brother, sun, sister, moon, mother beautiful) Yeah middle sibling suitable but far from son of excellence Back in a long time ago, I was to way the wishes wish But missers miss, I slept through my appointment Saw the liquid dreams of a thousand babies solidify And picked the rose and wielded The second I introduced myself as Nervous Well it appears the scars of learning have spoken Some are burning, some have rosen Some deserve tall tales, some have wrote them Some are just a brutal repercussion of devotion Mine are all of the above cuz everything leads to erosion Now where I live there's a homeless man He sits upon a crate He makes a rusty trumpet sound like the music that angels make Now if you ever come and visit me, I suggest you watch the show Tell him Aesop Rock sent ya just to hear his horn blow like this |
Knowledge this wisdom, this goes back when I was twelve
I love doin' right but I was trapped in Hell Had mad ideas, sad eyes N' tears Years of fear, but yo my foes couldn't bear I searched for the truth since my youth N' went to church since birth, but it wasn't worth the loot That I was payin', plus the prayin' I didn't like stayin' cuz of bizzie-bodies N' dizzy-hotties That the preach-ass souped up with lies Had couped up, lookin' at loot, butt N' thighs During the service, he swallowed up the poor N' after they heard this, they wallowed on the floor But I ignored, N' explored my history that was untold N' watched mysteries unfold N' dropped the jewel like Solomon, but never followed men Cuz if you do your brain is more hollow then Space oblivia, or the abyss With no trace of trivia, left with the hiss Does it pay to be deaf, dumb, or blind From a slave he was kept from the mind N' from a caves he crept from behind N' what he gave was the sect of the swine When the bible, that condemned the pig I don't mean to pull your hems or flip your wigs But we used to wear a turban, but now were in the urban No more wearin' beanies or dress like the genie No hocus pocus cuz I focus on the facts N' put it on the track or brought it through the wax I speak on Jacob, it might take up some time N' too much knowledge, it might break up the ryhme I did it anyway, just to wake up the mind Of those who kiss stones or prays on the carpet Those who sit at home, or sell books by the market Need to chill N' get their mind revived For years, religion did nothing but divide Killah Priests verse on B.I.B.L.E (Basic Instructions Before I Leave The Earth) -GZA |

I paused cuz the homie wasn't laughing with me So I tried to switch the topic up causally He exhaled smoke and threw his hat in the street Said, "playa I don't understand what happened to me Remember how I used to live extravagantly? white Jay’s, scuff-free, with immaculate steez? White Jays, scuffed 3s, with immaculate ease Stacked Gs, cop keys like they was practically free Now I'm scrambling these streets with this raggedy tee" I was puzzled by his feelings of inadequacy Then I saw the track mark when he pulled back on his sleeve Yea, my homie got a habbit it seems Sad, cuz I kinda wanna dap him and leave But I been down the some road so I put it on front street Then he stepped back like he wanted to punch me Told him, sit down, it's been a minute since we hung out Apologized for bringing out the fact that he was strung out Caught me off guard, and I know that lifes hard, But I really hate to see the homie in the graveyard Cuz all I wanna do is see my people live large, I always try to see my people better than they are He told me he would he would clean up, said it was a promise Looked me in my eyes to imply that he was honest But I know that I would lie too, back when I was on it So even though I nodded I was feeling broken hearted He the homie though, regardless, so I know I gotta trust him Told him I won't bring it up in any more discussions Then I hit him with some ones, probably bout a dozen He told me he was staying with his auntie and his cousin But I saw the bitch later and she told me that wasn't Told me if she saw him she would snitch him to the government Said he on some foul ****, she ain't even love him I was bugging, I know he on the needle how she talking hopeless Told me that he was evil, he didn't have emotions Said they found his babies with their throats slit, and he the culprit I'm like, oh ****, step back, how she go against blood like that? That's the homie from the way back, Looking at the stars like, "what they **** could make you say that? Naw love, I can't even play that."
