Because some people will think anything is cool if they are told its cool by enough people. It also helps when the person who is telling people to like something is someone they respect or a friend.

A standard brainwashing technique is to gain someone's admiration and then tell them what to think. Why do you think all of the big media outlets spend so much time making sure that there announcers, VJs, DJs etc. are "Cool"

Look at stockers because they see someone all the time on tv/movies etc. they start to think that person is there "friend".

Its why celebrities get paid so much to endorse products.
