DH, think of it like this. Metal you have a bassist and drummer, rhythm and percussion. You have your guitar and singer for pitch. Singer also does lyrics and sings.
A good emcee does all of this himself. To rap you are the rhythm section, you are the percussion, you are the tone, pitch, and singer. You're a whole band yourself. No metal band does that.

Dude that's deep. Although it's only really true if you're the producer of the album also, unless I'm missing something.

Bane of your existence 04-18-2009 11:39 PM

Nah, I was going to add that producing your own album adds even another element of depth to your musical contributions, but and emcee alone can stand as all that. I'd listen to Talib Kweli acapella before I'd listen to Bullet for my Valentine.
But producers stand alone as one man bands too. I bet Petestrumentals sold more than Trivium ever has. Same reason. Then hip-hop combines all that win, fuuuuuck. It's an art form.

rap is so boring, that's why i hate it. The best rap song is imo is ( 2pac - hold ya head up), but even it sounds just like the rest. Boring, and after a couple hundred plays i couldn't stand to listen to it anymore.

Bane of your existence 04-18-2009 11:44 PM

Dude you've listened to way too little rap to start talking shit.

All I know is that if you listen to Eminem's songs...like "When I'm Gone", "Cleanin' Out My Closet", and "Stan"...you can hear some deep and meaningful lyrics.

Also, Live Your Life by T.I. and Rihanna has some of the most inspirational lyrics I've heard.

Darkest Hour 04-19-2009 12:32 AM

i respect eminem. I used to be a huge fan of him in middle school

I didn't think you'd ever say something I agree with.

I respect you for that.
If you want, I'll try to put together a collection of songs that have some good meanings.

Well rapping is a lot like poetry if you take away the beats, so it should be more easily applied as a one person sort of thing anyway. But yeah, producing takes a lot of talent which it doesn't get credit for often times.

That applies to anything, if you listen to something a billion times it will get boring.

Fruitonica 04-20-2009 12:48 AM

Going back to the list; it's pretty good but gives too much credit to 'classic' gangsta rap.

holynapkin 04-20-2009 06:02 PM

Stan? That's a poor choice, but as others have already mentioned, it's all subjective and no one will ever agree. This is why I absolutely HATE VH1 top 100 countdowns.

cheezyridr 04-30-2009 05:05 PM

what no nwa? no ghetto boys? what about doo doo brown? what about beastie boys? any list of great rap songs that don't include at least 2 from getto boys is lacking. (imo)
i also woulda picked something else by ice-t. for example, midnight is far better than cop killer (which isn't rap anyhow, it's on a metal album) and that's just one example. how will smith got a song on there and not getto boys just blows any cred your list might have had, away. summertime is a cool song, but pshew! you missed some important stuff, i think.
on the other hand, you may feel that my opinion is worth about what you paid for it.
