The Anticon Appreciation Thread

The founding members of Anticon have been releasing genre-shattering infused hip hop since 1997 and have made a huge impact on what we consider as 'alternative' hip hop, as well as having a firm voice in the industry as a whole, and I think they deserve some love. The main ‘collective' consists of Doseone, JEL, Sole, Why?, Odd Nosdam, Alias and Pedestrian but they often collaborate with each other, forming acts such as Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Hymie's Basement and a **** load of other collaborations. The amount of music and diversity put out by the Anticon group is nothing short of amazing. If you can't get into 'rap' this might be a good place to start, or a good place to realize it's not all black and white.

So basically, if you don't appreciate these artists we can't be friends.

A few good ones:
Why?

cLOUDDEAD

Doseone

Hymie's Basement

Dr_Rez 04-06-2009 04:22 PM

cloudhead is fantastic. Listen to that for a longgg time.

Janszoon 04-06-2009 04:52 PM

I appreciate Anticon.

simplephysics 04-06-2009 04:58 PM

Janszoon and RezZ, on my good list..

The rest of you however..:ar_15s:

I agree cLOUDDEAD is one of the better projects, as I tend to listen to the material Why? puts out and contributes to more. Yoni Wolf is a god, people.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 04-06-2009 05:02 PM

hymie's basement are one of my favourite bands. amazing album.

Was it you I was talking about Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop with a couple weeks ago or was that someone else?

Anyway, I've had so many near misses with Why? it's hilarious. I first heard about him about six years ago when Oaklandazulasylum came out. I remember searching high and low for that album and never finding it until I lost interest and forgot about ever getting it. To this day I still don't own any Why?. Then I went to see him/them back in September at the Unitarian church in downtown Philly. Me and the friend I went with weren't that into the opening act so we went to a bar around the corner for a couple drinks. By the time we got back the show had just ended and we completely missed Why?. :(

Pretty sure you recommended that when I was going on about how all of the founding members should have one album together, I should get back to looking for that. Tsk on missing Why? live though! I would do unforgivable things to see Yoni preform. But yea, I can send you an album now if you're still interested, probably Elephant Eyelash since I already have it upped.

That would be great! I can send Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop in return. :)

It's a deal!

BlueCadet 04-07-2009 04:49 PM

I find anticon to be pretty average honestly. Why? is pretty good, but not anything super special in my opinion. (alopecia was among the better 2008 releases). The only Doseone groups im really into are Subtle (namely For Hero: For Fool) and Deep Puddle Dynamics' Tase of Rain...Why Kneel (Slug, dose, among a few others. great stuff). Clouddead is something ive never really been able to get into, but im giving the self-titled another listen as I speak. Hymie's Basement I never heard.

Overall though from what Ive heard I find anticon to be a pretty average independant rap label, eclipsed by similar offerings from Def Jux, Rhymesayers, and Stones Throw.

I will agree that, at least out of what I've heard, the best releases on DefJux or Stones Throw are better than the best releases on Anticon. The cool thing about Anticon to me though is that the bands have this certain aesthetic that's shared between them but pretty much unique to the label. I love when that whole communal aesthetic thing happens on a label. Totally different style of music but it makes me think of the heyday of Wax Trax, one of my personal favorite labels of all time.

Didn't see this thread earlier or would have posted here.

Everyone should cop this if they're in to any kind of experimental hip-hop, there's no validator so you can B.S. an e-mail.

sidewinder 04-17-2009 10:39 AM

I also appreciate Anticon, though I find some of the stuff a bit too silly for my taste. Or too white, I don't know. Dose One's voice gets on my nerves, most of the time. My favorite Anticon release would be Odd Nosdam's No More Wig for Ohio. I suggest everyone go out and get that. Here are some others I enjoy:

Alias - Muted
Jel - Soft Money
Telephone Jim Jesus - Anywhere Out Of The Everything
Odd Nosdam - I enjoy them all
DJ Mayonnaise - Still Alive (****ty name, good music)
Thee More Shallows - Book of Bad Breaks

Kamikazi Kat 04-17-2009 01:15 PM

The only artist I've heard from Anticon so far is cLOUDDEAD, and I absolutely love them. I'm listening to the other artist you posted and I'm fairly interested. Not sure if I like them or not, I just want to listen to more of their material.

I'll take any uploads you are willing to give as well.

Gareth Brown 04-18-2009 07:42 AM

Uh personally i find Aesop Rock a bit boring although he has some good songs and that new why album was just pants.

Sure thing, give me a few and I'll get some albums upped.

Fruitonica 04-20-2009 12:46 AM

I liked the production of the clouddead video, but the vocal delivery was way too minimal.

But the Why? video totally won me over and I'm definitely going to check him out. What would you say is his best?

Yoni 04-20-2009 03:59 PM

Dude.

Get Elephant Eyelash, Alopecia, and Oaklandazulasylum. I don't know if Oaklandazulasylum will appeal to you at first, but Elephant Eyelash and Alopecia surely will.

Thar he blows!

I suggest starting with Elephant Eyelash, but The Vowels Pt. II is on Alopecia which is drop dead gorgeous as well.

Yeah, but I feel like Alopecia and Elephant Eyelash should go hand in hand. Oh, dreadnaught, I think I'll make you my friend right now with this:

Take-Away Show: Why? - "Eskimo Snow" | Crackle

New Why? album coming soon. :hphones:

 Oh, the things I would do to be in that parking lot. That was charming.

I'm extremely looking forward to a new album, thanks for the heads up.

Yoni 04-20-2009 04:40 PM

I think it's like, a bunch of songs that weren't put on Alopecia, and some other things, or something like that. I'll see if I can find the news story thing about it again, man.

I actually downloaded Oaklandazulasylum before you posted, and it's interesting but not as hip hop as I was hoping for. I'll go for Elephant Eyelash next and see what I think.

simplephysics 04-20-2009 05:12 PM

I'd say Alopecia has more elements of hip hop than EE does, if that's what you're looking for. Again, both are great so it probably doesn't matter which one you go with.

Why? is not really just a hip hop group, it's a big mesh of genres. But yes, as said, Alopecia has more hip hop elements than Elephant Eyelash. Songs like Good Friday, The Fall of Mr. Fifths, Brook & Waxing, and By Torpedo or Crohn's.

Fruitonica 04-21-2009 05:39 AM

So, I got sidetracked looking through the Anticon roster and ended up with A New White by Subtle, which is a side-project by Doseone I think.

Anyway, I'm on a first listen and I can already tell it's excellent. The production is just stellar, with a stronger hip hop focus than Why? but in a completely original way.

Deep Puddle Dynamics are excellent but I can't find my cCloudead album :( Any up's will be appreciated :) why? are excellent too. I need to get hold of Alopecia as I only have Elephant Eye Lash.

That album I posted earlier in this thread is more "hip-hop" than most of what you'll see from Anticon. Mostly because folks like Aesop Rock and Brother Ali spittin on it.

Check out For Hero: For Fool, I personally like that one more.

Fruitonica 04-30-2009 07:05 PM

I plan to.

God, I read his interview on Pitchfork and man, there is a lot going on behind these albums. Most of it seems to be just in his head though, there's no way I could piece together the songs to come up with that story.

simplephysics 04-30-2009 07:18 PM

Yeah, Doseone is a completely different breed of human. The videos of him on youtube are pretty entertaining. People complain about his voice but I don't really have a problem with it, the sh*t he comes up with makes it worth sitting through.

For Hero: For Fool is a good album, I agree.. gets better every time I listen to it.

pourmeanother 05-04-2009 08:01 PM

I just bought Why? "Alopecia" because it's a popular release, and accessible. I really like it so far. Chuch!

Sneer 10-20-2009 03:21 PM

I appreciate certain projects within Anticon, namely Hymie's Basement, Why? and ClouDDead, but i dont think it has anything on the quality of Def Jux

Molecules 10-20-2009 03:49 PM

deep puddle dynamics is in my top 10-20 h/h albums, doseone is a genius, gotta love those scribble jam vids he comes with capital B Bars.
Not had the time to explore much beyond cLOUDEAD, who make Sounds that pleaseth the ear. Not so sure about the schmindie stuff, although I think the hip-hop fusion renaissance of Anticon has got to be respected. 'Genre' does not seem to be a term in their lexicon.

Engine 10-20-2009 05:51 PM

Jel: bona fide badass

and another thing...

overdoser 10-23-2009 06:25 PM

why? is playing here with AU, Serengeti, & Polyphonic. tonight.

Molecules 10-24-2009 04:38 AM

those videos were amazing. liked the description of Lil' Wayne and 50 Cent 'stylistically? like two grandmas kissing' haha

adidasss 10-24-2009 07:08 AM

Dayum, that was great.
