Read it with a Mario accent and everything is resolved.

The Batlord 09-14-2018 07:23 PM

That's anreasonable.

Fine. You're right.

Everything after The Eminem Show is fairly mediocre. It's just that MMLP was so legendary and impactful that people latch on to that Em while trying to pretend that his newer mediocre and ironically really poppy songs are as good as he once was.

Also, he brought technical lyricism to the mainstream.

DwnWthVwls 09-15-2018 08:34 AM

Technical lyricism to mainstream? What an insult to artists like Rakim

Cuthbert 09-15-2018 10:55 AM

MMLP wasn't even that good imo.

When he says "mainstream" he means WHITE FOLKS

Yeah.

Cuthbert 09-15-2018 01:41 PM

Rakim was hardly mainstream.

Nas is a better example.

Lucem Ferre 09-15-2018 02:11 PM

Is Nas really that technical of a rapper? I know he technically beats women, but does he rap technically?

Loosely speaking.

Guess it depends on your definition of 'technical'. Have you listened to Illmatic?

Not yet, that's why I asked. I've never heard anything from him personally that's super technical like Eminem.

Nas' rhyming style and flow is quite different from a rapper like Eminem. But I would certainly say that Nas is a technically excellent rapper. Illmatic is often held up as one of the greatest rap albums of all time, and for good reason.

Nas' flow though is quite standard for the time among his style (mid 90s east coast boom bap rap) and I'd be inclined to say that Eminem switches his flow up more than Nas does. Despite this, Nas has an indelible ability to paint a picture and a story with his rhymes - full of progression, characters, plot twists, and climaxes - plus, he's often thought-provoking.

With this said, there are some beats on Illmatic that I don't think have aged as well as others. For comparison, Jay-Z's debut, Reasonable Doubt, released two years after Illmatic, has aged much better in the realm of beats (comparable albums because both are NY rappers and producer DJ Premier had an almost equal hand in both).

Doesn't mean you'll like Nas or even find him to be a staggeringly great rapper - I simply think he perfected the fundamentals. There are more colorful rappers and if someone were to ask me for rappers who I considered to extremely technical, Nas would come after guys like Pharohe Monch, Chino XL, Canibus, Ras Kass, El-P and perhaps even Andre 3K.

But, like, is he skilled in the technical department like Eminem is? Does he have as many syllable rhymes? That's what I'm talking about. Not whether or not he's a good rapper or a good lyricst. Just if he has the same technical ability as Eminem. Because that's why Eminem gets that praise. He brought technical ability to the mainstream and people think he's a great lyricist because of how technical he is. Though, in my opinion, how well you can rhyme words doesn't mean you are a great lyricist.

[MERIT] 09-16-2018 02:20 AM

Eminem out-raps Nas on the technical side of things, for sure.

Ah, I interpreted the phrase "come after" erroneously LOL. My bad.

EDIT: Don't do drugs.

"Halftime" is my favorite jam on that album.

The Batlord 09-16-2018 12:19 PM

Basically all the jams are my favorite jam. They all kinda sound the same but they're all hella good.

I love almost all the tracks - only one I was never enamored with was "Represent".

If I had to choose a favorite - gotta be "It Aint Hard to Tell".

Cuthbert 09-16-2018 12:42 PM

Halftime for me as well.

They don't all sound the same either dunno what Charles is on about.

The Batlord 09-16-2018 01:16 PM

They all have a very similar sound compared to a lot of modern hip hop.

Cuthbert 09-16-2018 01:33 PM

They don't all sound the same though.

The Batlord 09-16-2018 01:53 PM

They kinda do though.

Plenty of metal albums I'd say that about and also love to death. I love Illmatic too.

windsock 09-17-2018 10:35 PM

An album can have sameness but I think as long as that sameness is good it's okay to stretch it out over 10 tracks with a little variation here and there.

If you can't tell the difference between black and death metal then maybe you picked the wrong forum.

Cuthbert 09-18-2018 03:06 PM

Death Metal = extreme vocals and more aggressive instruments.
Black Metal = metal from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal etc.
