Death Metal = extreme vocals and more aggressive instruments.
Black Metal = metal from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal etc.

My taste in music is so good that I can't tell any artists apart, no matter the genre.

Isn't black metal more atmospheric while death metal is more heavy? And black metal is more occult focused while death metal is gore focused?

Eh, broadly speaking that's close enough, but the two genres are so varied that it isn't a litmus test and especially early on they were coming from many of the same influences so in the 80s it was much less distinct.
