Default Nujabes

No thread? Time to start one then. Nujabes is one of Japan's finest exponents of Hip Hop, both mixing, producing and as a head of a few record labels of which Hyde Out Productions is his most known.

His sound is decidedly old school, utilising Soul, Jazz and Funk lines yet it's still technologically up there with American producers and DJ's.

Recommended listening:

First Collection (A comp featuring his label names)
Metaphorical Music (his own stuff)

Nujabes does some amazing work.
On that note, I'm actually ordering these soon...

What a coincidence, I was just giving Metaphorical Music yet another try when I stumble across this thread. I don't mind Nujabes, but is hardly something I would go out of my to get to (which is odd because it seems right up my alley) but I love some of his work producing and his label, especially Emancipator.

With the exception of a few tracks, Nujabes has always come off as boring elevator music to me.

I think a lot of people just don't dig on the easy vibes in his music. It's not a confrontational sound that is sometimes expected in hip hop. I have always liked a smoother sound as much as any other sound In hip Hop personally.

Nujabes Fuck yeah.
The only reason I watched Samurai Champloo was for the music.

It's not necessarily the creamy smoothness of his production that makes it boring to me, I just feel like it kind of sits there and doesn't do anything for you. I'm all for smoothness.

I guess I like it when instrumental hip-hop does that. I really like the nujabes that I've heard - it reminds me of MF Doom's beat production: repetitive, smooth, finessed and going nowhere fast.

If you don't have them, and don't feel like looking.

I'll up and send the Samurai Champloo ****s when I get them.
