Big Boi

Always kinda been in the shadow of Andre 3000, the other half of Outkast, but now he has finally released his first solo album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and apparently it's pretty good.

I've only gotten to listen to a couple tracks, but i like what I've head. His delivery is crisp, and the production is ecletic and not stuck in trying to milk more of the ATL sound that Outkast helped create.

Anybody get it yet?

keith! 07-01-2010 09:21 PM

I've got it and I've been listening to it a whole lot. Great stuff on it. So many catchy songs on it.

dcone12 07-15-2010 09:27 AM

this has to be rap album of the year so far...

y5nthon5a 08-31-2010 11:56 PM

Shutterbugg=great video, great lyrics, great beat... A modern classic.

dark shadow 09-04-2010 08:50 PM

actually, i got a chance to see big boi thursday, he played a free show on my campus courtesy of our CAB. indoors, so hot, nobody cared.

Sparky 09-09-2010 04:11 PM

i think it did pretty well. It debuted #3 on billboard.

Future 10-02-2010 09:46 AM

good album.

crossseasent 10-04-2010 10:55 AM

He definitely stepped his game up on this one, think he has earned the right to step out of 3000's shadow now.

Landon 10-19-2010 01:30 PM

Wasn't blown away by his album but I was never the biggest Outkast fan so maybe it'll grow on me.

sleepy jack 12-25-2010 11:52 AM

Big Boi

There might already be a thread on him, but I couldn't find one on google search and within the first 4 pages of the rap forum so I figured I'd just make it.

The album's greatest strength for me is also kind of my bigger issue. It's all over the place, which makes it refreshing to hear but sometimes the lack of direction and all the different production can be a bit masturbatory and distraction. Big Boi's rapping is excellent though, as is his lyrics, the album definitely hits a low spot on Tangerine through Fo Yo Sorrows.

What did everyone else think of it?

Also I posted this in the Black Keys thread but I think I got totally ignored: Free Black Keys / Big Boi Remix Album « the needle drop

Pitchfork really loves this album. Guess I should listen to it...

I've been listening to that Big Boi/The Black Keys mixtape for a couple days now.
It's amazing.

djchameleon 01-01-2011 04:00 AM

I recently listened to Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and I love the first about eight tracks then it starts to go downhill. The other tracks are pretty forgettable in my opinion.

Sparky 01-01-2011 06:27 PM

Maybe the most overrated album of the year, still very good though.

I was not a fan of the Black Keys mashups. My two favorite songs Follow Us and Shutterbug didn't sound correct at all especially shutterbug without the thumping bass in the beat from the original.

I'd say Kanye has him beat.

Hitting_Singularity 01-10-2011 01:08 PM

I love his new album! All the singles are the best songs, but the whole album is amazing. I can't wait for his new album this year.

mr dave 01-12-2011 01:45 AM

this has been my roommate's car disc of choice for about the last month. it's pretty awesome.

GoodFella 01-14-2011 11:21 AM

Awesome album. Tied with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as my favourite album of 2010.
Hopefully, 2011 will see the release of Andre 3000's solo album, and the new Outkast. *Fingers Crossed*

I just realized, that might not be far off from my favorite hip-hop albums last year.

I think 2011 will see us dre's new album and another Big Boi, but I can almost guarantee you OutKast won't be back until at least 2012

bonesaw-orchestra 01-14-2011 07:50 PM

This has got to be my favourite album. I heard Shutterbugg this past summer and had to get the album. It was definitely a good choice, something catchy to bop your head to, not to mention especially fun to dance to as well. I love YouTube - Big Boi - Fo Yo Sorrows (OFFICIAL VIDEO) Ft. Too Short,George Clinton,SamChris another thing that makes this album great is the random crackhead skits.. not only that but the King Henry skit makes me laugh heartily every time I hear it, it's right after Ain't No DJ woo Big Boi :)

Bless my inbox please I beg you. I will be buying it anyway, I own all Outkast's albums including Big Boi's. Been waiting for this.

Cuthbert 12-04-2012 01:44 AM

Got it, will listen and report back.

Big Boi On Working With Phantogram and Why He Muted You On Twitter | MTV Hive

Interview on VLADR.

Quote:

Based on what I’ve heard of Vicious Lies, this album gives off a much different vibe than Sir Lucious Left Foot. How would you describe the differences between the two?

Sir Lucious is more laid back, a little more lackadaisical. To me, it’s more of a daytime record, while Vicious Lies is is more of a nighttime freefall. You don’t know where the night’s gonna take you, and it’s so adventurous because it turns so quick from song to song. That contrast I see is definitely like night and day. So I would say Vicious Lies is like the nighttime-until-the-morning-up record, and Sir Lucious Left Foot‘s like a lunchtime-to-dinnertime record.
Strange that he says TSOCD was more laid back, as I'd have said the complete opposite so far.

Cuthbert 12-04-2012 03:08 AM

Nearly finished now.

Don't expect another TSOCD, this is completely different. Sounds like something Andre would do (post 2006 Andre not old Andre.)

It's good, still resembles an Outkast CD, not as hard as TSOCD though. The single was a good indiciation of where Big Boi was going with this album.

Sparky 12-04-2012 11:45 AM

I listened to the first few songs and didn't care for them but i was also more focused on halo.

It sounds very poppy in a bad way. The guest spot are concerning too-bob, kid cudi, kelly clarkson. Seems like Big Boi is trying to cash in,probably has one too many baby mommas who want child support now

Wrong Kelly :p:

Honestly mate give it another listen, I thought it wasn't that good at first. I liked it but I didn't think it was great. Now I think it's great.

Sparky 12-04-2012 11:58 AM

yeah i will in a bit. It's crazy to think there hasn't been a distinct outkast release for over a decade now, since stankonia.

If this is as good as it gets now ill just have to accept it.

FrankBeardjr 12-04-2012 12:08 PM

That whole camp is dope, I have gotten the pleasure of working with Kyle Lucas, who is part of Big Boi's label, he has had nothing but good things to say about working with Big Boi, and "Mama told me" ft kelly is a great single.

14232949 12-07-2012 08:55 AM

boy, is the new album a terrible pile of steaming monkey ****.
I think if you ever wanted to know what an artist clinging onto his last ounce of relevancy and promptly discarding it in a sea full of filler and terrible songwriting sounded like then this is as close as you'll get.

Big Boi, what happened? Right from the start this record had absolutely no imagination, no creativity, no drive. It was a challenge to get through it.

The hooks were dreadful, one actually went along the lines of;
'Let me see your titties
she said okay
Let me see your pussy
she said okay'

Absolutely woeful. It encompasses how much thought went into rushing this abomination out that one of the hooks from the track 'In the A' was actually recycling the hook from Shutterbug from his last album.

There was no attempt to make any new songs of the level of Shutterbug, Follow Us or even Tangerine Dream. There was no attempt to make a coherent, memorable album.
Big Boi ran out of decent verses about 3 tracks in and the hooks remained constantly dismal throughout.

Oh, then there was the track that seemed like the Never Ending Story with Big Boi whining about his dead father. It wasn't done in a way that the listener would have their heart strings yanked at by Big Boi's upsetting tale, nor was it done in a sentimental manner.
It was just whiny and unnecessary. Not to mention it dragged on for a painful amount of time. It was honestly the musical equivalent of slowly strangling a cat to death and crying about its demise at the same time.
I can't imagine who Big Boi thought the track would appeal to.

There was the chance to either go one of two ways with this album, make a hardcore rap record or to make a poppy record with the aim of breaking the mainstream.
Big Boi attempted the latter. What he failed to realize is that pop music is usually catchy and memorable. Traits that were lost on this terrible, terrible record.
This album just sucked, anyone who liked it I must question your sanity.

It makes me thankful that Andre 3000 stayed well away from this, because this record would surely be like a black hole sucking the life out of anyone that came in contact with it. Terrible record.

Get off the fence and tell us how you really feel.

You sound pissed off because it's closer to pop than hardcore rap, don't see why that's a problem, if you're an Outkast fan you pretty much accept that that's how they are. They've always flirted with pop.

There are 4 or 5 great tracks on this album, some average and a couple below average. It's not a pile of **** at all. And there were poppy tracks on TSOCD, Be Still, Follow Us, Hustle Blood...

This bit though

I do not agree with at all. Pop music is on the whole, ****. Outkast are one of a few examples of good pop music.

Appreciate your opinions though, not knocking you, I just don't agree. There are worse examples of cringe inducing Hip-Pop than this.

Oh and as for the hook thing, the first line of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was recycled on ATLiens (the title tracks), again I don't see the problem?

14232949 12-07-2012 09:58 AM

You thought there were 'great' tracks on this? 4 or 5 of them? Name one.
I don't have a problem with a pop record, hell sometimes it's for the best when a hip-hop artist moves more into the mainstream. This record tried to be pop (Look at the collaborations) but just came across as depleted of any redeeming qualities.

I did like his first solo album also. But, this came nowhere near. Can you honestly tell me this album will be getting talked about in a year or twos time?

As for pop music, it's aim is to create easy-to-listen-to songs that can be heard and enjoyed by the majority. Us music nerds are the minority.
Everyone knows the words to Call Me Maybe and I don't think I went anywhere this summer without hearing Flo Rida's Whistle Song.
They're undeniably catchy and memorable. They may not be technical music masterpieces, but they're not trying to be.

This album tried to be pop, and was just a flop.

It's right next to Habits and Contradictions as the worst hip-hop release of the year in my opinion.

Apple of My Eye
Objectum Sexuality
CPU
Descending
In The A

Also how can you say it's a flop when it's not even released yet. It could go number 1, would it still be a flop then?

14232949 12-07-2012 10:10 AM

It was a flop in my opinion. I've never really cared if an album was successful either critically or commercially. It's whether or not I liked it.
I did not like this album, it sucked therefore in my universe it is a flop as I had reasonable exceptions that this album came nowhere near exceeding.

I've covered 'In The A'. It's a lazy re-hash of Shutterbug with Ludacris bragging about how much money he makes.
CPU is annoying and horribly clichéd.
Girl sings hook about what a great guy lead artist is, lead artist drops average verse.
Descending is woefully slow and whiny. 'Meh daddies gone' over some downbeat instrumentals is not a 'great track'
As for the other two, they left absolutely no impression on me at all. Stellar.

OK bro. I feel some of the arguments you are using could be applied to his previous album though. We'll have to agree to disagree. I enjoyed this album.

Oddisee - People Hear What They See
Apollo Brown & OC - Trophies
Mello Music Group - Self Sacrifice
Nas - Life is Good

Was Elmatic last year or this year?

There might be a couple more but my memory has gone blank, that and I'm not as big on Hip-Hop as some of you guys, so don't scold me :o:
