Calling All Wanna-be Producers

If you think you have what it takes to create the hottest beat that has never been heard then bring your best work to the table and we'll let MB judge/decide who the winner is.

So far the only contestants are Btown and myself.

I'm going to give a long deadline for this so that it will give time for me to be not as busy and re-learn FL Studio but as far as deadlines. I'm looking at 5/31.

If you don't want to wait until then, you can post your submissions in this thread and we can discuss and break down what you have created to help you improve your skills

Thom Yorke 03-25-2011 10:32 PM

What do you use to create beats? I've never tried creating one but I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Edit: Nvm, FL Studio

Sparky 03-26-2011 12:07 AM

This sounds awesome

Antonio 03-26-2011 01:11 AM

hmmm, i may consider this, now i just have to get better at beat making.....

BTown 03-27-2011 03:20 PM

Hey dude its cool I suck at making beats too its just for fun man don't be shy.

[MERIT] 03-27-2011 04:59 PM

I like the intentions of this thread, but this is the easiest way to get your work stolen and used by others.

I certainly never heard of any Hip Hop producers using other people's work before. That would be astonishing...

Dirty 03-27-2011 07:53 PM

If anyone wants someone to rap over their beat, I'm up for it.

I like this thread. Maybe I'll try to make something really simple. I have always just rapped and never messed with beats so it's doubtful, but either way I'll keep an eye on the thread and listen to the beats submitted even if it's only dj and btown

Freebase Dali 03-27-2011 07:59 PM

I'd probably throw down some beats. Clips, at the very least.

We could probably still do that Cypher that we talked about

[MERIT] 03-28-2011 02:05 AM

This reminds me of the battle rap thread from back in the day. Anyone wanna resurrect it?

Phantom Limb 03-31-2011 12:41 AM

I'm so down for this.

Phantom Limb 03-31-2011 09:05 PM

I'll start it off.

Used some samples from classic material for that one. Listen for Pixies, Nirvana, AIC, King of New York, & a Townes Van Zandt interview snippet. It's a licensing nightmare

Phantom Limb 04-05-2011 02:53 PM

Thats some really tight **** man. What do you use?

Antonio 04-10-2011 05:41 PM

i'll post up some stuff in a few, just have to fix up the vids/upload them to Youtube

djchameleon 04-10-2011 05:42 PM

I have been playing around with a few things but nothing I want to share just yet.

Antonio 04-10-2011 06:51 PM

ok, here's three songs i made, best listened to with headphones. these were all made with FL Studio, so apologies for it being so amateur sounding :o:

Power Hour

-out of the three i like this one the best.

La Vaca Fea (The Ugly Cow)

kind of a throwaway beat i made. also, to make it longer i put the audio in there twice, so there's kind of a hiccup in the middle.

The Struggle

this one's more of a song than a rap beat, but i still think it could work. what do you guys think?

Phantom Limb 04-19-2011 04:54 PM

So are we only submitting one beat or can we do more?

Im just wondering because my stuff varies.

djchameleon 04-20-2011 01:55 AM

you can do more but only submitting one for the contest itself.

you can post more in this thread though.

Schizotypic 04-23-2011 03:36 PM

Dude I just started a few months ago, but It'd be cool if some of you can give me some tips. I only have like a minute clip of stuff so far (literally I haven't saved anything else), and I'll post that.

Stone Birds: fuck yes, I'm very impressed. I could probably learn a lot. When did you start on FL? What do you want to sound like?

Conan: I had no idea you made beats, I like them. What do you use? When did you start?

Dark777: I could probably learn a lot from you too. Very nice beat.

SampleDifferent+CUT+Bitcrusher(Editevents).mp3 I didn't want to upload it onto youtube or soundcloud so you'all have to d/l it.

That was really sweet. It sounded like some crazy dubstep or something. If you have more you should record it cause i'd like to hear it. Also, what program do you use?

I'm using FL Studio. I've only been practicing a few months am and at the very beggening levels. I don't have MIDI ketboard so I can't use Reason without using Rewire and using it via FL, which is restricting to say the least. I need to learn A LOT about music theory (semitones, cents, chord progressions, sheet music, etc), rhythm, making good drum beats (I suck), modulating pitch and other things with wobbles (this falls under the category of "the million things I need to learn to use FL), SAMPLING (hate it can't do it at all working on it vigorously), and let's just say a ****ton of other stuff... basically, slowly goes the snail.

Thank you for the positive feedback though, I love to hear it. =) Unfortanutly I just erased everything I have ever really done on FL (including what I uploaded), so until I start saving my files again (haven't for a while) I'm out of material. Give me about a year and I'm sure I'll have something and be much better.

CHCl3 04-27-2011 09:12 PM

I'm trying to make a beat for the first time and it's.... not going well. I have a 15 second beat so far but I was wondering how I could possibly extend it without it becoming tiresome.

If your using FL Studio you can always sends me a PM for help, and hopefully vice versa. What to you mean by extend it? If you want it to repeat that's one thing, if you want to add to it that's another. Also it depends on what your making your beat with.

I'm using Virtual DJ.

I was wondering how I can loop it cleanly. I'm trying to do it but always get a silent pause that lasts about half a second. I made the beat using a sample of one song and mixing it with another sample.

usually when looping yo can see the sound wave. I would try and cut the sound wave in a place where it will connect to the beginning of the loop easily. I would look up on forums how and youtube tutorials how to avoid clicks.

This is the audacity that he is talking about. I used to use it in the past when I wanted to take voice recordings from my other djs and mix it in with audio to make them intro music.

The deadline for the contest is quickly approaching about five days or so.

I haven't decided whether I want to give an extra 3 days or so for the slackers but I will let you guys know either later today or tomorrow what I decide.

Did you finish up your beats yet?

Phantom Limb 06-06-2011 03:27 PM

I take it that the competition is finished then. How are we gonna do the voting and whatnot?

Antonio 06-06-2011 05:12 PM

yeah, plenty of time has passed

yeah, I meant to make a post about that today being monday and all.

I had a busy weekend.

Everyone that wants to be considered for voting should submit their works via soundcloud or youtube and if you have already then just shoot me a PM with the one that you want entered into the voting process as some of you that posted already submitted more than one.

I will start the voting process in three days from today based off of the info that I receive.

anticipation 06-20-2011 02:09 PM

i know it's too late for the comp but i'm not really concerned about winning, just wanted to put this up and see what people thought.
