kendrick lamar

one of the supposed "up n comers" that I actually can get into. Not incredibly original, but really solid rapping

supermarlin 06-18-2011 10:32 PM

Just another one aftermath are going to leave sitting in the ranks.

djchameleon 07-05-2011 02:50 PM

Thanks Kirby, I had to share this when I heard it.

Kirby 07-06-2011 05:45 PM

^ Definitely a dope track.

Goofle 02-03-2012 03:12 PM

Been going on about him lately, but Section.80 is my favourite album right now. Makes me emotional. What the what!

LoathsomePete 02-03-2012 03:17 PM

It definitely hit a chord with a lot of people last year, it definitely stayed in my car for quite awhile. "Keisha's Song" is one of the finest examples of modern story telling I've found in hip hop recently, and I'm glad that he's at least getting some mainstream attention. Apparently he has a new album in the works for this year called Good Kid in a Mad City.

Goofle 02-03-2012 03:23 PM

He does have a new album out in 2012 but it will have a different name.

Thom Yorke 02-03-2012 09:01 PM

I've been meaning to check him out with all the hype he's getting. I'm pretty sure all I've heard him in was that cypher, and I remember he had a really cool, effortless delivery which I dug. Section.80 the place to start?

LoathsomePete 02-03-2012 09:04 PM

I'd say so, if it works for you I'd also recommend checking out his mixtape (O)verly (D)edicated.

Goofle 02-04-2012 06:38 AM

Yeah, but I think you should listen to Section.80 twice in a row. That's what I do anyway, and I always enjoy it the second time round more.

Violent & Funky 02-14-2012 02:17 PM

Anybody else think 'Hii Power' sounds waaay too much like Kanye?

Goofle 02-14-2012 02:40 PM

Nope, not if you listen to the whole album.

I've listened to that album. Several times. Doesn't change the fact that the song ****ing sounds like Kanye...

Goofle 02-15-2012 09:15 AM

Kanye isn't anywhere near his level as a rapper, but the production isn't that far off. They sound nothing alike to my ears.

I agree. Our favorite, 'Rigamortus' demonstrates that. But on 'HiiPower' he steals all of Kanye's signature sounds. You know, the stupid "huhs?" and flow and even has me saying "****ing ridiculous" after he raps "I mean this **** is"...

Goofle 02-15-2012 09:37 AM

Now you say that...

I shouldn't have had to say that? It sounds like Kanye!

is this a serious statement? if so, it's both hilarious and incredibly ignorant at the same time.

Goofle 02-16-2012 08:12 AM

Okay, so Kanye West is comparable as a rapper to Kendrick Lamar? Or, better, judging by your comment? Because that would be a hilarious comment.

Kirby 02-16-2012 09:01 AM

KanYe West is a great rapper.
Kendrick Lamar is a great rapper.

They're comparable, because they're both great rappers.
And yes, that song sounds like a KanYe song.

Also, what does everyone think of the lineup for the "New West Side Connection"?
Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Terrace Martin

Goofle 02-16-2012 09:15 AM

I don't think Kanye is a "great" rapper to be honest.

JaysMusic 02-16-2012 11:42 AM

Kendrick has an incredible talent, I have been listening to his music for the past year now. He's signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Record Label so I think he'll be starred into the right direction. I don't think he'll be extremely big but he will do well.

Violent & Funky 02-16-2012 01:08 PM

I tend to agree with Goofy. I don't think of Kanye as a great rapper, I just think he produces some excellent songs.

That said... why emulate such a mediocre rapper?

blastingas10 02-16-2012 01:57 PM

Kanye is a joke, so I don't doubt this guy is better.

Goofle 02-16-2012 02:05 PM

A joke? Do people need to go to extremes?

Yes. He's a joke. Classless idiot, as he's shown on multiple occasions.

Goofle 02-16-2012 03:33 PM

Shows in what? His songs?

blastingas10 02-16-2012 03:54 PM

The Taylor Swift incident at the VMA's, for one.

Goofle 02-16-2012 04:31 PM

Ahh, so you haven't listened to his music.

No, I have. But I'm just saying, he's a classless loud-mouth fool. I think his music sucks too.

duga 02-16-2012 05:48 PM

I thought the same but I really can't deny his talent. He makes great records.

That being said, recently I've preferred Kendrick over Kanye.

blastingas10 02-16-2012 06:02 PM

i like some of his older music. But eventually I began asking myself, "what is this **** I'm listening to?" But that's just me, not trying to ruin him for anyone else.

8 doobies in the face
**** that
12 bottles in the case
nigga, **** that
2 pills and a half weight
nigga, **** that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjlFqgRbICY

I just don't see how this can be taken seriously.

duga 02-16-2012 06:15 PM

There is actually a point to all that...did you not get that the theme of Section.80 is the disconnected view that Reagan-era kids have of the world?

I didn't catch that as the theme to the whole album, to me it just sounded like that might have been the theme of one song (whatever one had the intro that talked about reagan). Honestly, people from lots of different generations can relate to the things he raps about. Maybe I didn't listen closely enough but i didn't hear that at all.

Goofle 02-17-2012 01:27 AM

I got that as a trend throughout, but you would have to explain how that ties in with the lyric blastings posted.

blastingas10 02-17-2012 01:43 AM

I'm not trying to hate or disrespect rap or hip-hop, or anyone who likes it. I just honestly don't see much value in it. There is some that I like. But I think a lot of it is the same. A lot of it is about drugs and sex and money and anything that ties in with those subjects. Not all, though. There is some rap that I can respect and appreciate. I just have trouble seeing the musical and poetic value in the majority of it.

Goofle 02-17-2012 01:48 AM

So you exclusively listen to instrumental music then? :p

blastingas10 02-17-2012 02:02 AM

No. I listen to a lot of music that has lyrics and isn't about sex and money. I have no problem with drug related music, but you could at least be a little more clever than "8 doobies to the face". There's some great drug influenced writing out there that doesn't consist of, "Drops of LSD to the face" But I guess the fact that a black man is saying "doobies" instead of "blunts" is quite creative. I guess music doesn't have to be serious to be enjoyable. Different strokes for different folks. Different strokes to rule the world.:p:

Goofle 02-17-2012 03:39 AM

I was just yanking your chain :) But I think the "f*ck that" comment at the end of the sentence is not typical.

oh no, someone in the music industry is a jerk. will everyone PLEASE think of the children?!!? D:

Taylor Swift's music is bland city, btw. your opinion on Kanye is your opinion on Kanye, so i'll leave it at that, but I will say that Kanye is one of my favorite artists.

........

but anyway, I thought Section.80 was one of my favorite albums of 2011. (O)verly (D)edicated i wasn't as much into, but that was mainly for the beats. on both albums, it's hard to deny Kendricks raw talent and rapping ability. definitely one of the best rappers today imo.

but yeah, putting up songs just cause
