Shabazz Palaces

This is "Butterfly" from Digable Planets' newest project. It's dope stuff.

Sparky 06-28-2011 10:01 PM

uh -oh
we got some good music posted which means everyone on this site will ignore it :(

This is so ****ing good. downloading black up right now

I really needed this bruh it's been so dry lately.

Janszoon 06-28-2011 10:09 PM

Sounds like good stuff! I especially like the third track you posted.

Alec 06-29-2011 06:08 AM

When I first heard Shabazz when "My Mac Yawns..." I didn't know what to think, it's such a far cry from Ish's earlier work, I bought the EPs and spent a while listening to it before I ****ing loved it. Black Up (aside from Madvillainy 2) was definitely my most eagerly awaited 2011 Hip-Hop release.

FaSho 06-29-2011 09:46 AM

Pitchfork gave it Best New Music, so obviously I'll download it.

adidasss 06-29-2011 11:28 AM

^^ What he said.

supermarlin 07-02-2011 07:39 AM

I've been trying to get a download of this for a while. VERY keen to hear it.

supermarlin 07-06-2011 06:49 AM

REALLY enjoying 'Black Up'.

Phantom Limb 07-06-2011 03:12 PM

I think that Black Up may end up being my favorite hip hop album of the last 2 or 3 years.

Sparky 07-07-2011 09:40 PM

Yeah i can't think of anything this good since the ecstatic or born like this.
This album doesn't sound like it samples instruments, it's all like crazy african rhythems if they were put through some really hardcore industrial factory or something its super crazy to listen to.

Butterfly raps like it's still the 90's and being interpretive and more typical poetry is still the ****, and over this crazy spacey electronic beats it makes for a excellent contrast but still bangs.

Unless Madvilliany 2 actually comes out, this will be hard to beat for album of the year.

storymilo 07-07-2011 09:54 PM

I liked their 2010 EPs but have yet to get the album. Will get on it.

Surell 07-09-2011 09:14 PM

I'm reeally liking the sound of this, but what sucks is i won't be able to see them even though their at the music festival i'm going to. They play at the same time as OF. :ccccccccc

PS: I downloaded. Seems megapromising.

Sparky 07-12-2011 10:34 PM

absolutely obsessed with this song

you should go see shabazz palaces instead of OF. OF has enough fans.

But i'm one of teh fanzorz. And i was jerking off about being able to see them before i ever thought it was a possibility. (Tyler's going to sign my breast)

Goofle 12-22-2011 11:55 AM

Probably my favourite track of 2011.

DoctorSoft 12-22-2011 12:24 PM

^ One of mine too, **** I love this album. Very unique sounding beats. Good lyrics too.

supermarlin 12-23-2011 09:52 PM

Black Up is possibly my favourite Hip Hop album this year.

Thom Yorke 02-09-2012 04:36 PM

Really digging this.

thedtrain 03-14-2012 12:21 AM

i picked up their black up album and was completely blown away by it....a couple weeks later picked up their ep (self titled one i think), and wasn't so much impressed...maybe i'll give it a few more listens to.

'free press and curl' definitely my favorite track on the album

Surell 03-14-2012 09:55 PM

Did y'all see Butterfly's guest list on P4k?

Shabazz Palaces' Ishmael Butler

Top Things

01. Belaynesh

02. Weekend: All American

03. Kola Boof

04. All of Toyin Odutolas work

05. Boom Clap Bachelors: "Lob Stop Sta" [ft. Coco O]

06. November 5th

07. Black bean burger from Zippy's

08. The view from Saul's rooftop

09. The Mavs

10. The alien I saw working in a kebab shop in Berlin. He looked like a slightly melting Arab Gary Shandling. I knew something was funny by watching him move, it was something in the way it poured the tahini. Then a weird incandescent light was pouring out of his ears, sort of like honey. He peeped me noticing, saw the confused horror explode through my expression and moved in a time folding way, like a film jumping. It looked shocked like a young boy that was discovered stealing quarters from his moms purse to play Galaga at the corner store. I backed away into the door and almost broke through it but then it said something that sounded like "xeeulis" or something and I felt comfort like never before. We spoke for about an hour but everything it said I immediately forgot. Except this: that Kanye West was the greatest artist of any kind in the history of man.

Engine 04-06-2012 12:53 AM

I wasn't into Black Up at all when I first heard it. I gave it a good shot because I'm willing and ready to slobber on anything Digable Planets alumni make but I just felt bored by this.

But I take it all back now. Lately I've been listening to the album on the daily.

Sparky 04-06-2012 12:45 PM

i saw them live the other night. The crowd was too white for the crazy afrocentric rhytms going on, it was just me and asian dude groovin, but it was dope.

He has crazy swag and does some crazy **** with his beatmaker

Surell 04-06-2012 05:16 PM

>: (

I really want to see them when they do the Free Press festival. There's a few other acts too, but I've regretted not seeing them at the Pitchfork Hipster Festival when I had the chance.

Sparky 06-24-2014 08:47 PM

new album yay :)

Surell 06-25-2014 07:25 PM

Yes we are saved!!!!!!

Sparky 06-25-2014 07:27 PM

no leaked tracks hold up to black up yet imo

but have to listen to it in entirety and pick up on nuances

Surell 06-25-2014 07:33 PM

That's a bummer, since I usually align with your sensibilities. I still need to take a listen to their newest stuff tho. I have checked some f their older stuff though, I couldn't get into the first EP but the second was great, that "gunbeat falls" just killin shit.

Sparky 06-25-2014 07:48 PM

Yeah. I've never given the first record a listen but i enjoyed his sophomore release quite a lot.

WWWP 07-02-2014 09:34 PM

Goofle sent me Black Up on vinyl for Christmas and it's been a staple for me ever since. Any recommendations on similar albums or is this a freak of nature?

14232949 07-03-2014 06:45 AM

The new album leaked last night, heard it's a pretty low quality leak though. Option is there to get it still, I suppose.

THEESatisfaction (who appear on "Swerve...") are pretty similar and definitely worth checking out. awE naturalE is the album I have, but apparently they released one last year which went totally over my head.

I need to get the new Shabazz Palaces album. If it has leaked properly anyway.

WWWP 07-03-2014 08:53 AM

I'll probably be buying it once released anyway, I'd rather hear it properly for the first listen. I have a love hate relationship with leaked albums. Thank for the rec, Clancy, I'll look into them.

Would you mind PM where you find leaks nowadays. PLZ dont say torrents.

Goofle 07-04-2014 01:19 AM

I just google the album and add"download" or "zip/rar" etc. no specific place.

mp3crank.com & mp3boo.com are good sites to use Sparky.

Engine 07-25-2014 07:15 PM

I don't say this often but I'm going to buy Lese Majesty (have not heard it). Shabazz Palaces have already earned it.

Goofle 07-25-2014 07:52 PM

Not heard much good about it to be honest. I'll be downloading it soon though.

Engine 07-25-2014 08:28 PM

Don't care. Will buy

Surell 07-31-2014 04:17 PM

I heard one of their new singles and actually really dug it, the productions a little different than black ups, clearer an more straightforward mainly but it's still a great, really distinct sound.
