Ghostface - 5
Ice-T - 0 |
I am going with Ice-T. Was a great original rapper.
|
I'm not super into either of these guys—though I like both to an extent—but the bottom line to me is that Ice-T was a much more interesting and groundbreaking rapper in his heyday than Ghostface ever was.

I know that I am a bit late on saying this but...
You forgot: Colt Ford http://www.blogcdn.com/www.theboot.c...456-041812.jpg just saying... But seriously you forgot: The Beastie Boys http://blog.presspass.com.br/wp-cont...astie-Boys.jpg |
Beastie Boys were one of the early pioneers of getting white people into rap music. It is a great thing. Always if it was not for Beastie Boys, people like Enimen would have no chance in Hip Hop.

The Beastie Boys were left off the list because they are a group. This is an MC battle.
Eminem is in the list, but I don't hold much hope of him progressing far, considering he's not too popular on Music Banter and rightfully so. Will chuck up a new tie tomorrow, so keep voting. Currently Ghostface is leading Ice-T 6 points to 3. |
Ghostface takes the tie. Up next we've got another battle of 80's vs 90's.
Maybe this one will be a little closer. |

Talib is a better "technical" MC in my opinion, but Chuck D means so much more to me personally, and is quite an underrated MC in terms of lyrical skill, even if his lyrical content is very much appreciated.
Chuck D - 1 Talib Kweli - 0 |
Could you possibly have picked a worse picture of Chuck D?
Anyway... I'm voting Chuck. Like Goofle said, Talib Kweli is probably the technically superior rapper, but Chuck D just resonates with me more. Chuck D - 2 Talib Kweli - 0 |

I'll throw my analysis in.
Chuck D: Obviously a big name in hip-hop. Considered to be one of the most influential MC's of our time and with Public Enemy gained both critical acclaim and notoriety. Definitely a pivotal figure to a lot of guys who followed, as many have claimed him to be the originator of political rap or as some may brand it 'meaningful rap' Chuck talked about oppression, slavery and racism which I guess resonated with many people in the 80's and even today. Some (Rolling Stone readers) consider PE's second album 'It takes a million...' as the best hip-hop album of all time. I prefer the Anthrax version of this track, so here it is. Chuck only released one solo album, here's a track from it. And another PE track Talib Kweli: Alike Chuck D, Talib earned most of his recognition from a group: Black Star in which he and Mos Def teamed up. He was a big name in the 90's, but I can't help but feel that guys like him and Mos Def wouldn't have existed without the earlier influence of Chuck D. Talib's released 5 studio albums and is considered by many in hip-hop as being one of the most technically sound rapper. I am inclined to agree, the dude's flow is sick. here's a video as Blackstar. This tie is the hardest so far for me to call, on one hand you've got the highly influential Chuck D with a recognizable voice and politically charged lyrics and on the other one of the smoothest flows in hip-hop in Talib Kweli. I've got to ask myself who I think is the better MC. And that's why I've decided to go for Talib. If we're talking rapping ability, he's up there with the greatest of all time. Chuck D 3 Talib Kweli 1 |
Just wondering if we're supposed to consider producing as well (if it applies), or if it's just emceeing.
As for Chuck vs. TK, I'll go with TK. I'm not the biggest fan of either, but I like more of what TK has done in his career, specifically Black Star. I could never really get into Public Enemy. Chuck D - 3 Talib Kweli - 2 |
I think "MCing ability" should only come into play when you like both artists, or at least the music they have produced. I personally think near enough every Talib solo record borders on boring, so I am going to choose Chuck D, who has made some of my favourite records of all time.
If I liked them equally, I would have gone with Talib. |
I am going with Talib Kweli. He is a unique rapper.
|
Talib Kweli for me.
|
Chuck D. I can appreciate a few of Talib's songs, but it's not the same as what Chuck D did in my book. Talib is working his way up though... he's much better than I gave him credit for.
|
Super Kwe by a mile.
|
Kweli for me.
Talib: 6 Chuck D: 5 |
Talib Kweli. It was a tough one though man. I felt like I was picking a favorite child or something :$
Talib Kweli - 7 Chuck D - 5 |
I think sometimes Talib's just easier to listen to.
I'm not always in the frame of mind for Chuck D's brand of aggression towards the man. Keep the votes coming in guys, new tie up tomorrow. |
From the little I've heard from the two, I would have to give it up to Talib in terms of MCing skill. Chuck D's strength comes largely with the Public Enemy stable, ie. Flav's hype and X's beats (especially) and is more of an orator who rhymes than a real slick spitter.
|
Final Score:
Chuck D: 5 Talib Kweli: 8 And as promised, a new tie for y'all. |
|
I'm gonna do it. I'm pulling for Cube!
1-0 Ice Cube Never thought much of Dre. I don't see my vote changing, but I'll pay attention to what Dre voters have to say. |
Two former members of Niggaz Wit' Attitude, Dre and Cube.
Both have went on to have successful solo careers going rather different ways about obtaining said success. Once revered as the 'CIA's most wanted rapper' Ice Cube was NWA's star attraction. For years he was considered one of the most bad men in gangsta rap with controversial lyrics about the Los Angeles Police Department, race and equality issues. The Chuck D of his time, if you will. However, that man is a far cry from the ex rapper who would appear in terrible family movies such as 'Are We There Yet' in later years. On the other hand Dr.Dre has primarily stuck to musical pursuits assuming the role of producer for many other acts such as Eminem, The Game and more recently Kendrick Lemar. However, Dr himself is a long way away from the character that brought us hits such as Nuthin' But A G Thang and Still D.R.E So, I guess both men have mellowed out in later years so we shall have to look at their pasts to see why they are considered such pivotal figures in hip-hop. In terms of solo output on a strictly MC'ing front, Ice Cube has put out 9 studio albums as opposed to Dre's 2. But one has to take into account how Dre has focused primarily on producing throughout his career whilst Cube has always been an MC. Anyway, here are two more tracks from each dude. Make your own minds up. |
Dre is one of the best producers in the history of hip hop, but this is just about MC-ing, right? Then it's Cube easily. He's a terrific fusion of style and substance. I love the guy. He really deserves his status as one of the greats.
Cube: 2 Dre: 0 |
See, my issue with calling Cube one of the greats is how far he has fallen off.
I guess if Pac or Biggie had lived they'd have probably done the same, yet nobody discounts their legacy because they didn't have a chance to tarnish their reputations. I could see Pac starring in an Adam Sandler movie, Biggie probably would've gone down the Dre route or even the Diddy route with his own clothing line and whatnot. Anyway, I'm going with Cube because in his prime he was really good, and Dre was always at his best behind the production desk rather than the microphone. Cube: 3 Dre: 0 |
Cube should walk this.
