I've always had a soft spot in my heart for those unapologetically uncool and ridiculous artists and.. well, the coat in Thrift Shop says it all. But on a serious note, I do like the duo quite a bit. They may not be mind-blowing and innovative in either lyrics or production but they're still good fun to listen to and it's always great for me to like a song that absolutely everyone else I know likes.

I don't get it. I just don't get it. I see no redeeming qualities in this guys music.
It seems to me like a record company picked a random white middle aged man and decided to make him a 'rap star' hoping he'd appeal to people wanting a cleaner, safer alternative to those typical hip-hop hooligans. He's similar to LMFAO, but not funny nor does he retain any of the novelty. |

I understand that you don't like his image but he isn't something that was manufactured by a record label. I downloaded his album when it first came out and burned through a couple of tracks til I was tired of them. When I first heard "Can't Hold Us", I swore that he got John Legend as the feature to sing the hook but it ended up being Ray Dalton that sounds similar to him. One of my favorite tracks is Jimmy Iovine, the beat seems like it would be better for a throwaway club track but instead he uses it to talk about meeting with an exec. for a deal with a label. |

Enter Mankycat. He's in the business of being the angry guy with so much taste he can't relate to the common man. Occasionally we're told we can't argue with him because he just played to a really tough crowd. (He's in the comedy business but you wouldn't know it from his comments or musical interests). He has opinions. And he took them with himself when he ran off to bury his head in the sand. By the by, how are you DJ. Its been awhile. |
macklemore does make me nervous, can't help it.
whats goin on |
I don't think it takes a discriminative taste to see the contrived nature of this 'hip' song. As I said I don't even see the novelty value in it.
Also, I'm not here to entertain, I'm here to keep the music discussion flowing which is why I give my opinions, I am of the opinion that this particular artist sucks. |

macklemore has nothing to say
his topics range from shopping at thrift stores to his favorite sports teams. It's music that celebrates the privileged nature of his life. His cadence sounds forced, the beats may occasionally be playful but otherwise are very bland. I could see his music coming on right after "wonderwall" or something. No semblance of anything i like about hip hop in his music. |
