Jay-z names his album “Magna Carta Holy Grail”

Jay and Samsung partnered up for his next album entitled “Magna Carta Holy Grail”. The album is already platinum, samsung already bought a million copies. Jay is a business genius.

SGR 06-17-2013 04:16 PM

I'm pumped to listen to it. Bring the heat Jay.

djchameleon 06-17-2013 04:20 PM

I think it's being released July 4th so it's right around the corner.

I'm sure they won't count toward official sales.

Awful name as well.

Janszoon 06-17-2013 10:39 PM

So does the title mean that he's attempting to limit his own powers via a search for something that doesn't exist?

djchameleon 06-18-2013 02:46 AM

Lol Jans.

It just means he's in the illuminati and wants to brainwash more people.

SGR 06-18-2013 05:07 AM

Haha, Jay in the illuminati, that's funny. If the illuminati existed, the only black person who'd be in there would be Obama, haha!

Watching Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Jay-Z & Pharrell in the studio just enjoying themselves is one of the dopest thing ive ever seen. Cant ****ing wait for this. That first beat in the Samsung-video sounded sooooo dope.

djchameleon 06-19-2013 06:15 AM

Here is the video for those of you who haven't seen it yet.

Album sales are counted by how many the record company sells to distributors and major companies directly, not by how many are bought in shops.

If Samsung buy a million copies and they only sell one it's still classed as a platinum album based on the record company selling a million to Samsung.

What happens to the other 999,999 copies is Samsungs problem.

I just read an article about this explaining it a bit more. They have to purchase the album for 1/3 of the Suggested Retail Price and Billboard currently does not recognize bulk sales which are then given for free. They only count Retailers that purchase in bulk with the intent of selling it.

Even after all of that is sorted out he still has to wait a month after the release date for RIAA certification to classify it Gold or Platinum depending on sales from retailers.

You can listen to the stream of it right now

HOT 97 | Where Hip Hop Lives

djchameleon 07-04-2013 04:22 AM

I don't know if anyone listened to that stream last night but Funk Master Flex was on some BS yo. He kept trash talking some other unknown dj that was supposedly doing the same thing or attempting to but he wasn't able to get his stream to work and of course Flex had to trash talk the hell out of the dude and tell him about how much of a loser he is for failing to get with the times and be on his digital shit.

I couldn't even enjoy it and figure out which tracks he was on because FMF was being so gaudy and shit. He was basically playing it in the background while he kept dropping his stupid bomb sound effects and ranting at the other DJ that fucked up.

I can't even tell you how the album is.

There are a few lines that I heard from Jay that I thought he was going to break into a cover of a rock song but he was just using the line while keeping his own beat.

There are two of them that he quoted. Which rock songs you say? I can't tell you because of fucking FLEX!!! I'm going to pick up a copy today and then I'll get back to you.

Isbjørn 07-04-2013 05:34 AM

It's not on Spotify yet - I'll stream it once it's available. What should I expect? Maybe I'll start liking Jay-Z?

DJ Dee Dame 07-04-2013 09:37 AM

I'm a big Jay-Z fan. He is actually my favorite ever...I have all his albums...even saw "Fade to Black" in the movie theater. I say all this to say that I'm really disappointed in this album and think it is the worst of his career. The beats are very mediocre and the lyrics are sub par and kind of dumbed down. I knew something was wrong because the marketing was different around this album, and no official single was released.

14232949 07-04-2013 09:52 AM

if anyone were looking for a download link, hypothetically they may gain one by sending Music Banter user Mankycaaant a personal message.

Also, I intend to listen tonight. Excited for this one, no doubt.

SabreMetrik 07-04-2013 05:58 PM

I've just been listening to Holy Grail and it sounds like a reference to the music industry again. Similar to Eminem's Not Afraid and 50 Cent's My Life. I could go on but basically:

The Magna Carta! If you don't know what that is look it up.
They mention things like 'Dirty Laundry' and 'Give It Up For Fame'.
The Tyson references about getting money then your life turns to ****.
Kurt Cobain and what he stood for, and the unfortunate way out.
Jay seems to be talking to himself as well, referring to old songs.
And, the Holy Grail. Immortality. Not as you may think, but, they are immortal.

Anyone else notice this?

I gave it a couple of play throughs and I'm liking it so far. He has a very similar theme to Kanye's about feeling wealthy but at the same time because he's new money getting looked down on by people with old money. He also talks about trying to help people from the bottom where he came from like giving them money but then he realizes just throwing money at them doesn't help he needs to inspire them.

NeverFail 07-05-2013 05:57 PM

Heres A Link To Download It

I'm enjoying the album so far. On my second listen. A lot of the lyricism is a clear step up from BP3. Hov gets into religion, philanthropy, racism, and even fears as a new parent. This presents a somewhat oddly vulnerable Jay. I can't say if it's a worthwhile album overall yet though. I did enjoy "Oceans", "FUTW", and "Crown" a lot though.

djchameleon 07-06-2013 06:48 AM

Oh man, "Oceans" is the only track that I can't really stand. It's so meh to me.

"Crown" is definitely a favorite of mines. "Holy Grail" and "Somewhere in America"

The horn line in Somewhere in America also kind of reminds me of Thrift Shop as well.

I really like "BBC" but that's mostly because it has that catchy sound similar to blurred lines. I'm pretty sure Pharrell produced that track.

SGR 07-06-2013 04:16 PM

"Picasso Baby"s beat sounds exactly like "So Ghetto"s beat to me.

14232949 07-06-2013 05:23 PM

it's very similar to Watch the Throne.

This one felt darker to me than WTT but I haven't listened to it in a while. I'll have to give it another spin.

djchameleon 07-08-2013 07:54 AM

Speaking of Watch The Throne they are working on a part 2 of it.

Watch The Throne 2

Soulflower 07-08-2013 03:53 PM

Oh goody another album with catchy beats with 3rd grader rhymes..... typical Jay Z formula. Dont have a clue why people flock to listen to his mediocrity.
