It's more popular than ever. Mainstream pop has adopted rap as a way to break up the constant singing and still include lyrics. Rap is at an all time high as far as I'm concerned. Maybe not in quality, but definitely in accessibility and mass appeal. Also, there is an entire underground culture of hip hop artists that can easily stand against the best rappers of the 80s/90s, whether it's lyrical content, rhyme schemes, wordplay, story telling, or live performances.
Of course it has, rap sales have been on a steep decline for years now, it is nowhere as near as popular (or good in my opinion) as it was in the 90's.

There is nothing wrong with this, its just natural, musical genres rise and fall. Take heavy metal, its still around but has it ever regained the popularity that it had in the 80's?

Rap will always be around in some form or another, but a younger generation will want to come up with something different than what their parents were listening to.

First off show me the stats. Second of all I think you ignored the part where I said pop music has adopted rap deliveries in many of their songs. Are you considering Katy Perry and other similar artists who are constantly doing work with rap artists? Just because it got bundled into a different package to sell better doesn't mean it's not rhyming. Rap is influencing more genres than ever before.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with rap being on the decline and I agree with your point that music culture is always changing. I just think you're wrong.

Just google rap is dead, or rap sales in decline and you'll get endless pages & citations. Its not like its now well known.

No, I saw your comment on pop music, but with the exception of R&B, even rap in pop music isn't as dominant as it once was, with the onset of artists like Goyte in recent years. Hell even the massive R&B hit Happy by Pharrell Williams doesn't contain any rap.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with this its just natural. Are there large amounts of African Americans in Harlem still wandering around with huge afros & bellbottoms listening to Curtis Mayfield & Jimmy Castor. Of course not.

Don't be so culturally protective or you'll turn to into a fascist, lol. Punk is dead, do I care, F)ck no! Like I said, culture isn't static & the popularity of musical genres comes and goes.

I'm not being protective, and looking at it I see strictly rap albums are on a decline. I still stand by what I said that rap has a greater influence than ever before. It's just different now. It's not gangster rap anymore, it's HipPop as some underground artists would say. Like I said, different package, same basic qualities.

Maybe my memory is shot but I don't recall rapping being part of any genre other than rap/R&B prior to the past 10-15 years. There might have been some random collaborations, but certainly not to the extent of today. If you can give me some examples to jog my memory I'm open about to hear your side, I just don't remember things that way.

It's amazing that I'm willing to listen and you can't even back up your claims. Do you always just contradict people and leave? Your contributions to this thread are now about as useful as the OP.

Considering the thread was pretty much destined for a downward spiral, this isn't entirely insulting. I know you weren't aiming this at me, but y'know.

Just because the OP is a complete moron doesn't mean there wasn't opportunity for good discussion among others. This is the first active thread in a while in the rap forums that involves discussion about the genre itself and not a particular artist. I thought William was going to introduce me to some things I hadn't realized or just remember incorrectly but instead he b*tched out because he's either too lazy or thinks I'm an idiot. The discussion we had going was a step in the right direction for other members to poll in.
