Selling all those records, making that much of an impact - they're achievements worth bragging about. Being a tough male is not.

why is that, exactly?

Dude, I like hip-hop. I enjoy things for more than just their lyrical content, and if I disregarded everything that featured macho bull**** I'd be disregarding loads of good stuff. You can enjoy something while still identifying it as problematic.
yea but it sounded like you liked it specifically for the macho posturing to me, when you said they "go hard." is that accurate?

I don't think we'll ever agree on this, if this is really what you think. Music can stray from its original idea. God forbid only listening to rock music that deals with the same subject matter that it did at its conception. I like it when genres evolve and adapt, both musically and socially.
i don't need us to agree, i can sort of understand where you're coming from i just see it differently. just wanted to hear your reasoning

i agree in general about music but i think hip hop is a pretty unique spectacle in this regard

I don't think it means anything. You have a 50/50 chance of being born male, that's not an achievement.
Thinking you're superior because you're 'manlier' than other men? It just seems like overcompensating for a lack of anything else to brag about. The pursuit of knowledge, talent, success, morality - all a million times more valid and noble than the pursuit of optimum masculinity. It doesn't accomplish a thing, it holds us back.

I meant what I said more in regards to the delivery and the sound iof the music. I didn't listen to the lyrics, in all honesty.

Does a woman pursuing her own femininity hold herself back? I'm no slave to my gender but I've still got plenty of testosterone. Whether or not I could have been born a woman, I wasn't, and so my brain chemistry and hormones don't work the same way that they would had I been born one. I can pretend that I don't have a gender for whatever reason, but I'd rather act in a way that makes sense to me. And so I listen to loud metal and contemplate the consequences of punching some dickhead in the face for bumping into me and not apologizing.

I may not like homophobia in hip hop, but the primal feeling I get when listening to music with such high levels of testosterone, be it hip hop or metal, is the ****. And the chance that someone with that much testosterone going on is going to be a totally enlightened person is comparatively low, so it is what it is.

I understand that, and agree to an extent. Embracing masculinity and bragging about it are different things though, being manly a **** is fine as long as you don't belittle those that aren't like that.

James, if you ever make it Toronto, I'll take you to a Blue Jays game. Six of the starting nine last year had a Drake song as their walkup music.

right i was not suggesting that being male alone was something a rapper should boast about

it's more of an instinctual/competitive thing, really. sort of like sports. i mean it's really not all that useful to be good at sports except for the fact that athletes have alot of the same physical skills/attributes that warriors had back in the day

and as a race men are driven to compete in this way biologically - because really that is what a male was supposed to traditionally bring to the table. so it only makes sense that it is our natural criteria for competition.

and so now we have athletes where you can say oh but they get skilled in a sport and they get rich and successful so that's an accomplishment. but those are just trophies we adorn them with because of their alpha status. other than that why would you want to pursue being a good athlete? what is it honestly contributing to society?

as for the allotment at birth you could probably say the same of a lot of things people brag about anyway. they brag about being good looking, that's certainly down to random luck. even intelligence... yet these are all universally acknowledged virtues

it seems like with feminism they want to strip away anything that might glorify masculinity out of fear of how that might impact femininity

but thats a bitch move son

You raise some great points.
I wouldn't necessarily berate a rapper for bragging about their physical fitness, although that probably happens more often is the case where masculinity is aligned with how accomplished a gangbanger you are or how many 'bitches' you have sex with. Horrible ways of looking at the world in my opinion.
I would argue that sports can actually achieve beauty in a way that violence doesn't.
I don't think that track you posted sounded overly manly, it sounded intense and angry sure - but I don't necessarily think that's what makes someone a man.
