Choosing a best rapper is like trying to choose the best colour...depends on my mood! :)

As someone who sees rap from a primarily lyrical viewpoint, I'm going to go with Aesop Rock.

Nope, DWV has become our hip-hop expert around here. He's put me onto some awesome rap artists, Iggy Azalea now being a personal favorite of mine.

To be honest I tend to avoid the UK scene/grime almost entirely because the accent and delivery just grinds on me. Only caught him a few months ago as my mate has been trying to convert me by throwing in some stuff in the post-night out hip hop chill out sessions. Heard the ring entrance for Joshua and ever since Shut Up has become an integral part of it. He's definitely got talent but not really my thing. We need more of our boys to deliver like Slick Rick, innit.

How'd you rate him?

If I'm completely honest, I don't really. He is quite good at spitting but no more so than a lot of London MCs, and it's nothing we haven't heard before. I can't understand the following he's got. He's bigger than all the top boys at the moment.

That tune (Shut Up) is over ten years old, a legendary Ruff Sqwad tune from the Limewire days. He's rehashed it and I'm guessing the younger audience took to it as they hadn't heard it before and it just gathered momentum from there, or down to the AJ thing like you say. Know Me From is also a rehashed Wiley tune, not that there's anything wrong with redoing tunes as like I say he is quite good but I haven't actually heard anything original from him yet so I don't get why he's got such a buzz when there are plenty of other people making original stuff.

Hah really? Showing my ignorance then, never knew that - but I'm pretty naive with it, there are loads who seem to get rated or raved on because of Fire in the Booth (him included) for instance, and I'm always left pretty meh.

That's the oldest upload I can find but it must have been about 04/05 when it was actually made.

I'm more on your side with it all now anyway, there is the occasional tune I like but I think it's had it's time now.

What Hip Hop rappers do you like from the UK?

Ahh fair. Shame I couldn't find it on Limewire back in the day, amongst all those horse clips...

As far as who I like, nobody up and coming really. Roots Manuva, Ty, Foreign Beggars and some Syntax and Akala.

Naturally I also believe Adam Hussain to be the UK's best MC.

Cuthbert 02-18-2016 08:41 AM

I forgot about GLC :D

Nice one, only one I'm familiar with is Akala. Not a fan of that Road Rap stuff that people have been doing. Kept & Koran, Giggs etc. I can't think of much genuinely good Hip-Hop from here.

80-90s UK hip hop is best..its now been labelled 'britcore'
Gunshot
Hijack
Hardnoise
Silvah Bullet
Overlord X
and the groups with a ragga flavour like..
Demon boyz
London posse
Asher D & Daddy Freddy

Roots Manuva is the best around at the moment imo.. he just dropped a new album.

Cuthbert 02-18-2016 10:51 AM

Cheers for all of those mate. Not heard of any of them (thought I knew Asher D but it's a different guy to the one from so Solid) but I'm listening to some now on YouTube, took people here ages to start using their own accents.

Could count MF Doom as UK Hip-Hop tbh.

Ah really? Roots is a good'un, definitely check him if you've never heard him before, pretty old school and I liked him as a bit of a crossover from 90s trip hop.

Bit of dub in his music and using the Jamaican accent takes him nicely away from the kinds of British delivery I don't like

Foreign Beggars have some sweet beats and went a bit dance/dubsteppy, but earlier stuff worth a listen,

Dr Syntax is the white guy you can hear on this track with them, he's a middle class joker who raps about A levels, not having girls, being white and uncool and working pointless bureaucratic jobs etc, he's alright, but a good one to drop if you happen to hear one of those conversations where a bunch of aforementioned whiteys are discussing the gangster credentials of Scarface or Eazy E.

I always claim Ricky D, never sure if we're entitled to Doom but Rick is our boy, whether he likes it or not.
