Default I'm So Underground

I felt like there should be a thread to discuss our favorite underground artists.

Go ahead and list off your faves and banter away.

Also we can talk/discuss why they haven't hit mainstream or even if they want to in the first place.

Slaine just released the album Slaine is Dead and it's pretty dope.

Well, what exactly make an artist underground? Lack of a label? Lack of mainstream exposure? In everyone's opinion what makes an artist underground?

Isn't this the point of much of the forum?

I always thought it meant unsigned, but I guess anything without mainstream exposure would work.

Unsure of what is considered underground if it has a relatively large following. Also, underground is not a strict term since someone could be familiar with all their work while others wouldn't be.

Imo underground artists are usually independent but there are a few that are signed to what is considered an underground label. If they don't have nationwide mainstream exposure. They aren't getting radioplay, they don't make it on the Billboard Hot 100, they don't show up on MTV when they play music after hours.

I'd agree with this. I'd say that the moment you get radioplay it doesn't mean your not undergound. But i think it hurts that label.

He's a good rapper, I'm guessing he never gets signed though because of his age. An old fat white guy with a greying goatee doesn't exactly fit the image major record labels are searching for to make a profit.

Would you say Aesop or Immortal Tech are underground?
