Matisyahu (Merged)
Hasidic Reggae? Hasidic Reggae. In the crowded New York reggae scene, Matisyahu literally stands out like no other. Beyond his versatile voice which ranges from sweet and fluid, to rough and rugged, he's a very unexpected face; standing over six feet tall, wearing the traditional garb of a Hasidic male. With his long beard and black hat, this 24-yr-old lyricist, MC, and beatboxer is a singular performer, whose power, poetry, and skills combine the sounds of Bob Marley and Shlomo Carlebach, yet remaining wholly original. SHAKE OFF THE DUST...ARISE, Matisyahu’s new album out Oct. 12 on JDub Records, presents this remarkable performer as a a new cultural fusion, integrating the power of reggae music into his life in Crown Heights as he lives and studies Jewish texts among Brooklyn's Lubavitch community.
Matisyahu did not grow up an observant Jew; he spent his youth as a seeker, and jumped from one experience to another. After much struggle and determination, he found Hasidic Judaism, and put it all into his music. He transformed himself from a lost teenager searching for meaning to a young man immersed in Jewish study. And while it might sound like kitsch, Matisyahu is 100% real, conscious dancehall reggae. Here's some links if you want to check out some of his music: Nevermind, I'm not allowed to post links yet? Lmao.. I'll post them when i can Enjoy. |
Any Matisyahu fans
Matisyahu has a new Cd coming out called "Youth", and i know the King with out a Crown single, but how is that live at Stubb's CD?? Is it worth buying the whole thing?? I'm just not sure, can some one let me know what they think? thanks
the stubb's cd is really good, but I haven't heard his Youth album yet.
I think the stubb's cd is a lot better then the non live album. Its a good buy
I just got Youth. It is pretty good. My only problem with Matisyahu is that he keeps milking King Without A Crown. So far he has 2 studio versions of it, and a live version. Cool it. Was there really a need to put a whole new version on Youth? But all in all its good.
I just got the Live at Stubbs' CD recently too, and I thought it was pretty good. Good mix of dub and 70's style roots in how the band plays, and Matis has an awesome voice.
I'm a fan. He's coming here on the 13th :) cant wait!!
For anyone who hasnt seen him... I present to you King Without A Crown! By Matisyahu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpkLG...arch=matisyahu |
There is so much better out there even coming out today than Matisyahu
love the band, nobody's heard of them around me tho grrrrrrrrr
but beat boxin' is my favorite song, i have no idea what cd thatcame off of, it's a live song tho. |
I was actually quite impressed by him. Who'd of thunk that a Jewish guy from New York would be the next big thing in Reggae?
I think the Live at Stubb's CD is better than the studio version. He jams.
If you get the chance to go see him, you should. You puts on one heck of a show. |
The whole cd is tight, I think... I enjoy it a lot.. I may have burned myself out just a little bit though.
I like his music, havent gotten the cd yet. dunno if i will.

He's really interesting and different ..
I think its a pretty nice change of pace from the norm
Matisyahu is amazing, have the youth album, well good
i think live at stubbs is a great cd and i love his voice but i havent really looked at his new cd much
I agree, his live album is much better than the studio. He's good at getting the crowd hyped up. His band is crazyyy. The guitarist is my favorite. He has a unique rootsy sound.
I have'nt heard any of his live stuff-I have YOUTH and like it. there is a rock influence going through the album which I like.
You should check him out live if he strolls through your town. His live performances are stellar on all counts.

on a side note, ive seen them live at acl 2006 and they were pretty solid. going to see them open for 311 next friday. |
Yes yes yes! Matisyahu is awesome, and he delivers a really great message, just like reggae music in general!
He's a great artist. I love his songs.
Matisyahu is refreshing to listen too, great stuff.
Matisyahu is fantastic, it just feels wierd listening to a style of music affiliated with one religious movement when its being sung in conjunction with another...still, I guess music transcends these things. The man is faultless when it comes to his output.
I just recently got into him and I am digging his stuff. I do wanna check out the Live at Stubbs CD though. I have heard good things about it
Had that, but lost it in the great iPod crash of 2006...*sigh*
Its alright...I liked his first studio album, live at Stubbs has some insane beatboxing I think (believe it or not)... |
I know this is super old, but I was wondering about this guy, Matisyahu. I've only heard a few of his songs, namely "Youth" and "King Without a Crown". They were alright, but I have to admit I'm more intrigued with the whole Hasidic-Jew-doing-reggae thing...I mean, it's really not common at all. But then I wondered it he was for real, or if the whole thing was just a gimmick to get people interested. It worked on my afterall. What do y'all know about this guy? Do y'all like him? Do you have any song to recommend other than the two I mentioned?
The guy dropped out of school and followed Phish around the United States as a teenager... He was your typical post-Deadhead of sorts. He went up to some Jewish camp in Colorado and found God, and ever since then he has been pretty true to his religion.
His music is great, can't recommend anything though... sorry. |
meh, I like em', as in I can't say anything bad about him. I grow tired of his music fairly quickly though. He did a great cover of The Police's Message in a Bottle.

Thread merged. Youth is a good solid album. Anybody have his debut? I have'nt heard it.
He played at my brother's school a year and a half ago. I went, but unfortunately my musical tastes had not yet grown to include reggae. I did enjoy the show though.
When i saw him live all he seemed to be doing was mumbling into the mic. Might have been **** PA but it wasn't good at all.
i have youth and live at stubbs. the live version is way better in my opinion. chop em down is my fave. and the king w/o a crown live is so much better than the studio version.

I love Mati. Does anyone know when he'll be coming out with a new album??
Live at Stubbs is great, Youth is great. I saw him last summer and it was a great show.
Hell yeah, I'll be seeing him November 23!
Soo stoked to see him again. |
He's certainly one of the much more interesting artists doing the rounds today. His music's been on at some of the (better) parties I've been to of late. I'll definitely have to check out Youth at some point (plus I don't have much modern reggae, so it's nice to know where to go next)
