The Skalars
The Skolars
Slapstick
Mock Turtle Soup
Distorted Penguins
SkaDaddyZ
Miggedys
Can't Say
Stubborn All-Stars

and obviously

The Specials
The Madness

There's some cool ska bands, I haven't listened to most of them in a while, but they still hold a special place in my heart. Especially over the summer.

I think it depends specifically how you use it, a lot of people use the term reggae to encompass ska, rocksteady, and the more specific subgenre of reggae. Bah, semantics.

Muzak 10-23-2006 06:58 PM

Ska was first, then Reggae, rocksteady ect.

acoustica 10-30-2006 02:59 AM

Ha, I did.

DontRunMeOver 02-02-2007 11:43 AM

In some sense, most ska is pretty appalling music. I'm thinking the guitars and the vocal styling particularly. It's great for dancing to when you're drunk though, so I guess it sits somewhere around bad disco and 80's electro on my sliding scale.

Strummer521 02-12-2007 08:04 PM

Most people at [I]my[I] school have never heard of ska.

QueenNothing 02-13-2007 09:48 AM

Ska is the ****. If you dont like it, well then you can just go to hell!

chrisfishlock 03-28-2007 12:57 PM

Ska=best genre of music ever ever ever ever ever.

Hood 04-22-2007 03:04 PM

ska is good in small doses

this_guy 04-26-2007 03:46 PM

I'm in an indie based school, so a lot of hatred for ska.

cardboard adolescent 04-27-2007 03:31 PM

jackhammer 05-09-2007 01:39 PM

I have found that with most forms of music-I get bored. I left school a long time ago-so not really bothered what people think-although my female work colleague loves ska so I get to blast some out at work sometimes! A local band SKANKT (U.K) are a fave at the moment.

Bane of your existence 06-13-2007 09:54 AM

Most people I know think Reel Big Fish is Ska.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-13-2007 10:52 AM

I got the new Slackers a few weeks ago and it is a really solid album

... Reel Big Fish are a ska band. Third wave, sure, but ska nonetheless.

beanbryant24 06-14-2007 08:06 AM

yeah

jackhammer 06-15-2007 12:51 PM

How can anyone not like ska? Music can be so serious sometimes. It's nice to just kick back and get into tha groove.

Seltzer 06-16-2007 04:06 PM

Most people who have ska-hatred don't know even know what it is. If you ask them, I bet they'll come up with Sublime and Reel Big Fish as examples - not that they aren't ska, but people don't tend to stretch their horizons further than those bands.

It got me wondering if anyone in the world has this problem of people around you shunning Ska and not respecting it at all.

Edit: Whoops I voted for the wrong thing. I meant to be the majority of people Hate Ska. :banghead: My Bad.

I live in Dubai, and here there are probably like 5 people who actually know what Ska is. In about 2008/09 we lost our best local Ska band, they all went away to University in the UK & USA. But a lot of people I'm friends with really hate it when I play ska, I don't know why but all they do is complain to turn the crap off, but that's mainly first wave stuff like The Specials and what not, but they are alright with stuff like Reel Big Fish and all the poppy fun stuff like that but stuff like Streetlight and Less Than Jake they REALLLY can't stand, it's kinda depressing cause I love listening to ALL of it, it puts me in a great mood but meh, I save it for alone time, which isn't really what ska is intended for but oh well you know...I have a few people who like it so I can skank around with them :P

Bands like The Specials are second wave Ska, not first. Let's give the Jamaican inventors of the music a little credit FFS.

This is the damn problem. Not enough education.

Oh c'mon, what's 30 years of history? If the end results are bands like Reel Big Fish, can't we just forget about Jamaica. (Wow, I think even my warped sense of humor may have it's limits).
