What was your first album?

The first reggae album I picked up was Bob Marley's Rastaman Vibration. It's a great album, but maybe not his best. It got me hooked immediately and then I went on a Bob Marley album craze where I picked up almost all of his stuff. I think got introduced to some different reggae artists (Buju Banton, Anthony B, Sizzla, etc.) and started buying them too.

What was your first album?

MobilizeTerror 12-22-2003 10:15 AM

I don't know if Reel Big Fish count as real ska, but that was the first album I ever got that was close to ska. :D

IndieRiot 01-10-2004 09:19 PM

My first 3rd wave ska CD would be Five Iron Frenzy - Upbeats and Beatdowns.

Rockafella Skank 01-11-2004 10:43 PM

Shan 02-17-2004 04:24 AM

God knows *attempts to recall through heavy grey curtains of what once was my memory..*

Probably my first ska tune would have been a single by the Beat or the Specials, and first reggae, dunno, I'd say Bob but it could've been some scratchy old vinyl import from a market.

Edgil 02-18-2004 07:56 AM

i think maybe I got a Beanie Man cd too back in the day..lol that stuff is classic

2tonegator 08-27-2004 09:56 PM

Dezzy 07-22-2005 07:34 AM

The first Reggae album I ever heard right through was Survival
by Bob Marley. That got me into this new type of heavy reggae. (it was heavy at the time, as I'd grew up listening to reggae on the radio. artists such as Johnny Nash, John Holt & Desmond Decker).

I'm finding hard to recall the first reggae album I ever bought. I remember buying The Specials by The Specials, You just can't stop it - The Beat & Signing Off - UB40 amongst others.
It was around this time that I got right into Ska/Reggae. I started listening to less Punk once the ska/reggae vibe hit me.
Still with me now over 25 years later.

anticipation 07-22-2005 11:17 AM

i listened to bob marley and i fell asleep. i guess that makes me unfit to post in this forum.

No Mate !!!
Falling Asleep is a perfectly normal human occurence. Yes you are right though, falling asleep would make you unfit to post in this forum as you would be unable to operate your PC :)

Jonny Sniper 09-10-2005 01:58 PM

it depends - was the sleep big spliff induced?

My first reggae album was Marley "Legend" and since then I have collected a ton of roots reggae. I love all of the old school stuff but I detest the dancehall crap that passes for reggae now. Sean Paul and the like aren't even remotely reggae - just crap.

Sophisattic 09-28-2005 02:21 PM

Yeah I totally agree about Sean Paul and co. They're quite fun to listen to the odd time when you're deprived of real music but certainly not reggae.

Captain Blizzard 09-30-2005 02:43 AM

This Is Reggae Music, vol 1 & 2 from 1976 with various reggae artists like Mighty Diamonds, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Third World, Augustus Pablo, Toots and the Maytals, Burning Spear, The Heptones, Jimmy Cliff, Augustus Pablo, Joe Higgs, Lorna Bennett, Desi Young and more

s_k 11-06-2011 04:00 AM

I've been collecting records for many years now and I cannot tell for sure which one was my first reggae record. I think it was the Rat in me Kitchen record that was slipped into my really expensive Eagles Live album. I got ****ed with that one. The UB40 record was knackered, so I smashed it to bits in frustration.
The first reggae album I remember buying was Marley's "live".

Last one I bought is Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, by the way.
I'm very proud of that :)

Howard the Duck 11-06-2011 06:47 AM

1st reggae album - Bob Marley Legend
1st ska - i can't remember - either Toots & The Maytals' Reggae Greats or Madness' Complete Madness

s_k 11-06-2011 06:49 AM

My First Ska album was definitely Madness' "Seven" :)

Stephen 11-06-2011 03:57 PM

I think my first reggae album was Bob Marley - Survival. It's still my favourite reggae album.

Howard the Duck 11-07-2011 02:14 AM

^^yeah, that's a good 'un

jackhammer 11-08-2011 05:54 PM

..and STILL the best 2nd wave Ska album and overshadows the 3rd too:

it sounds like it came out yesterday. Musically diverse and lyrically superb.

Amazon.com: Zungguzunagazeng: Yellowman

I remember hearing this at a friends and I immediately went out and bought a copy. Yellowman still holds a place in my heart. First ska album was One Step Beyond. I remember how huge the mod scene and rockabilly was in the early 80's. Circle city was a fantastic venue only blocks away and very friendly to the mod scene. Great times and people and Madness still holds up pretty well to date.

I would hope so. If that is not Ska, I don't what is.

And, I am not a big fan of Ska. It's monotonous. And, I think the 30's was the era of the Big Bands. Glenn Miller Orchestra:)

One album I do like is from Bob and the Sagets. And, two of them and two from Kos Mos formed the Menzingers.

Who are not at all Ska. And, I love em.

peace

it's always that skanking beat with emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat and the same old horns

same can be said of reggae - i find it pretty monotonous

i don't really find it monotous because of that, that's just the style of the genre to me. but to each his/her own, i guess. i might just be a fan of monotonous, repetitive music in general.

i can't stand most third-wave ska bands, though.
