Did I really just see a 311 thread in the Reggae & Ska forum?

Sure they may have some influence from those genres...but are overwhelmingly alternative rock to me. Anyway, it doesn't matter.

Anyway, I became a huge fan of theirs in 1995. I'd never heard of them and the cover for the self-titled album caught my attention at a listening station at a record store. I checked out some samples and was truly blown away. I guess I'd never heard anything quite like it, and just the first 10-20 seconds of the first couple of songs was enough for me to purchase the album. I took it over to my friend's house and one of them particularly was really impressed. We were typically listening to industrial and punk at the time. This was a change of pace. I really liked the bass in their music. Soon after I picked up Grassroots and Music, and enjoyed the hell out of all 3. I had a pair of 12s in my car at the time and the dub-influenced punk sounded great. They were one of my favorites at the time.

Sometime in 1996 I lost interest, and never checked out Transistor. The mainstream appeal may have had something to do with it...it seemed all the jocks and preps were into them by that point. Stupid thing to concern myself with, yes, but I was young. A few years later, maybe by 98 or 99, I eventually checked out Transistor and actually quite like it. I've actually given their first 4 albums an equal rating on of 4 out of 5 stars...though at the peak of my interest I would have rated some higher. Now that I rarely listen to them, they're equally good.

I never checked anything out after that album. I started hearing too many ballads, and the Cure cover I heard really sounded pathetic.

There new album Uplifter is on their Myspace today and I must say, the wait since Don't Tread On Me for 4 years, was well worth it. I absolutely love these new songs. Def give them a listen if you like 311. I cannot wait until next week when Uplifter comes out. I wish it would come quicker! =/ In the meantime though, def check out their Myspace for a listen of the new album, it is sooo good.

Linky!

I've only heard the songs "Down" and "Hey You", not very impressed, but I'm willing to check out an album. Which one?

There exists this thread already ;) Doesn't come up in a search so can't blame you for not knowing, but I remembered because I posted in it recently.

They're a decent, underrated band. Get way too much of a bum rap these days because of the associations with nu metal.

P-Nut is a pretty bitchin' bassist.

white boys should not try to rap with an island accent. the end

From what I remember on 311 they don't do much of that, but it could have changed since 2001's From Chaos, the last one I got...

And yeah, P-nut can thump it out!

Amber is one of my fave's

Transistor is my favorite, it's S.A.'s science themed album. It's the band's album, too, but I call it S.A.'s because I think he wrote the lyrics for over 90% of the songs. He talks about out of body experiences, free energy, and several interesting subjects.

Soundsystem deals a lot with science, too, mostly computer age stuff, but yeah Transistor is their best, because it really captures what makes them great, mostly really chill, mellow songs, with a few good rock songs thrown in. They're great to listen to if you feel upbeat and positive, or just really relaxed, or stoned.:yeah:

their later stuff might not be like that, i haven't heard anything beyond "transistor". i don't really have anything against them. music, and that blue album were ok. i know alot of island people, i hear the accent every day.
hearing it from them is just strange to me, that's all.

I played Grassroots non-stop today. I don't know why that isn't a more acclaimed album...

jat 09-24-2009 10:39 AM

i saw them a few years back. they put on a good show. i love the song amber

SlipknotMaggot 09-25-2009 08:05 AM

I like it too but there new album hasn't received positive reviews; I haven't listened to the whole thing yet. I think at this point in there career they are a live band because they put too much crappy-ballad-filler on their albums these days. Music, Grassroots, and 311 still pwn though! :yeah:

That would be even more boring.
