How music affects listeners mental health

Hey - I'm doing some work for my A Level Media Studies exam, and I have to get research on a subject of my own choice....

I have chosen to look at how listeners of rock music (all sub genres) behave mentally and how those who do not listen to rock, stereotype those who listen to it.

Say for example, some people would say those who listen to Emo are suicidal and depressed all the time.

I'd really like any opinions on this subject as it's kind of controversial... Not a lot of people will admit that the music they listen to affects who they are and what they do. Equally, it is arguable that it's not due to the music - but either way I just would like some opinions! =)

I listen to metal and rock too, so I have some opinions... I have been looking at how Marilyn Manson has been blamed for influencing the Colombine Shootings and the death of Jodi Jones... It's really interesting stuff and I just want to know what you guys think!

Thanks a lot! x :thumb:

Lol, sure it does =) I just want to find out what everyone thinks - whether the music affects you positively or negatively.

Like Ozzy Osbourne and Kurt Cobain could have "influenced" people to do drugs and then there are people like that guy who shot Dimebag who are just screwed in the head... You know? I want to know what people think of this, and how the music you guys listen to makes you feel! =)

I listen to Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, and i DON'T do drugs...So much for that "listening to artists that do drugs will make you want to do drugs" theory.

People say that some music makes you want to kill people...The only kind of music that does that for me is bad music, whenever i hear My Heart Will Go On, i want to kill Celine Dion.

I love the psychadelic experiance, I listen to some music and not pay attention to it, more or less I let it lull me over, trying to listen and pay attention distracts me from the experiance it could have.

But in saying that, I love being andrenalised by some music. System is a good example, as is Rage. Some music makes me feel invincible. Which is strange.

i would have to say that i listen to various music depending on my mood, meaning that i'm already in that perticular mood and i listen to music that coresponds with it....when i'm feeling chirpy i'll listen to some hot hot heat or chemical brothers, when i'm feeling tired or down, i'll listen to coldplay or travis, when i'm pissed off i'll listen to ATDI or RATM.....so, i would say that music can't affect me in the way that it changes my mood....i'm already in it...
