How music affects listeners mental health

Hey - I'm doing some work for my A Level Media Studies exam, and I have to get research on a subject of my own choice....

I have chosen to look at how listeners of rock music (all sub genres) behave mentally and how those who do not listen to rock, stereotype those who listen to it.

Say for example, some people would say those who listen to Emo are suicidal and depressed all the time.

I'd really like any opinions on this subject as it's kind of controversial... Not a lot of people will admit that the music they listen to affects who they are and what they do. Equally, it is arguable that it's not due to the music - but either way I just would like some opinions! =)

I listen to metal and rock too, so I have some opinions... I have been looking at how Marilyn Manson has been blamed for influencing the Colombine Shootings and the death of Jodi Jones... It's really interesting stuff and I just want to know what you guys think!

Thanks a lot! x :thumb:

when i put in some motorhead or megadeath i definitely feel like whoopin somebodys a$$ if that helps?

delusional_delirium 09-20-2005 07:16 AM

Lol, sure it does =) I just want to find out what everyone thinks - whether the music affects you positively or negatively.

Like Ozzy Osbourne and Kurt Cobain could have "influenced" people to do drugs and then there are people like that guy who shot Dimebag who are just screwed in the head... You know? I want to know what people think of this, and how the music you guys listen to makes you feel! =)

I listen to Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, and i DON'T do drugs...So much for that "listening to artists that do drugs will make you want to do drugs" theory.

tdoc210 09-20-2005 08:23 PM

cga me tooo

SharksAndDanger 09-20-2005 09:07 PM

i definately feel a little edgier when i listen to some heavy stuff, but there arent any significant situations where i shot someone.......... probably only cause i dont have a gun...

boo boo 09-20-2005 09:35 PM

People say that some music makes you want to kill people...The only kind of music that does that for me is bad music, whenever i hear My Heart Will Go On, i want to kill Celine Dion.

is what i was trying to say.

Merkaba 09-21-2005 03:40 AM

I love the psychadelic experiance, I listen to some music and not pay attention to it, more or less I let it lull me over, trying to listen and pay attention distracts me from the experiance it could have.

But in saying that, I love being andrenalised by some music. System is a good example, as is Rage. Some music makes me feel invincible. Which is strange.

adidasss 09-21-2005 04:49 AM

i would have to say that i listen to various music depending on my mood, meaning that i'm already in that perticular mood and i listen to music that coresponds with it....when i'm feeling chirpy i'll listen to some hot hot heat or chemical brothers, when i'm feeling tired or down, i'll listen to coldplay or travis, when i'm pissed off i'll listen to ATDI or RATM.....so, i would say that music can't affect me in the way that it changes my mood....i'm already in it...

delusional_delirium 09-22-2005 03:41 PM

hee hee, cool you guys - should help my research a bit! Need anything I can get my hands on **aiming for an A!** (fingers crossed!)

franscar 09-22-2005 03:56 PM

I definitely drive quicker if something loud or aggressive is on the cd player. It doesn't make me want to kill people though.

Not indicating at traffic islands makes me want to kill people.

The Drunken Terd 09-23-2005 03:15 PM

Listening to rap makes me wanna kill myself or other people, it p!$$3$ me off so much. Listening to metal , Black Metal puts me into a good mood.

Merkaba 09-23-2005 06:19 PM

Rap only pisses me off because I know how little effort it takes to make a rap song popular.

dog 09-25-2005 05:55 AM

john lennon really influenced the way i look at people, like how everyone is equal and no one should discriminate ever. and beatles music, (mostly peppers and magical mystery) kinda nudged me to become a pacifist, songs like 'all you need is love' and 'revolution' (both types). because i admire them so much, i agreed with all the messages they were putting into their songs.

Metal_Warrioress 10-02-2005 02:13 AM

powermetal is very close to home for me...it inspires my courage and hope...and allows me to be free and remind me who i am deep within...and that every battle i can fight in...i have a good chance of winning

Death metal allows me to be pissed off...but funny...it does the same thing power metal does just a lot less...

for me personally metal is definatly close to a religion of the heart ..depending my mood is the style...

i used to listen to kyuss/nirvana when i was stonned ..to me that music was ''trippin'' music...

Kempson 10-02-2005 02:19 AM

Some bands such as Pantera, KsE, Dry Kill Logic and Machine Head make me feel invincible. If I don't like the music it just annoys me though.

andy 10-02-2005 11:16 AM

Lillywhite Lilith 10-05-2005 01:49 PM

Never really thought about it before but music can make a real emotional connection, so i guess it can affect mood and thought.

Merkaba 10-06-2005 02:30 AM

Hear with the ears, listen with the heart, feel with the soul.

zium 10-06-2005 07:01 PM

I listen to heavy stuff when im angry and it helps me relax

Kashmir86 11-08-2005 11:18 AM

Music doesnt effect me very much, if anything it makes me more relaxed some of the time. certain songs like many by dylan and even some by rage make me think of how ****ed up the government and society is kind of makes me mad but its not like im gonna go kill someone or blow up somethin

Be careful i was you mentioning " blowing up something", Mr John Howard would have gotten a whole lot of ****ing SAS searching your house for terrorist ****, and grabbing you in the progress (hide):shycouch: ... anyway music effects me, by getting me pumped up but i don't want to kill any one and i don't listen to certain genres music to suit certain moods, i play what evers in the stezza or click on the first band on my itunes

by the way Itunes is better then Windows media player:yeah:

I feel the same way about these new teen idols. I mean, who in their right mind would wear a completely fake looking wig (cough cough Hilary Duff) and sing Wake up Wake Up..I mean, when I heard the beat of my heart...i alomost through the television down

And also, whenever i hear any 80's music (Mainly Motley Crue) I literally let out more adrenaline then anyone should. I get so hyped that my friends have tried knocking me out.

Merkaba 11-14-2005 06:14 PM

You oughtta be careful though, it can be hard to distinguish between that and attempted murder.

mosesandtherubberducky 11-14-2005 06:35 PM

Pink Floyd makes me want to sleep because it is so soothing

Electric Eye 11-14-2005 07:49 PM

in 9th grade i got really into metal, i was one of those stupid pop listing teens, although i always have liked some metal, and i had been depressed befor that, and when i started listing to metal and i am now happy, or angry, but there is no depression, now i'm ether happy as hell or pissed off, never sad.
