Best bands that were big in the 90's

In my opinion, these were the best rock bands during the 90's.

By the way I pick The Smashing Pumpkins for Corgan's creativity and Chamberlin's drumming tactics.

Josephine 09-25-2005 01:55 PM

Kurt f***ing Cobain. I mean some might say, Nirvana was overrated, but I love the gift they gave to me. I dunno how I would feel without songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come As You Are", "Heartshaped Box", "About A Girl", "Lithium" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"...

ArtistInTheAmbulance 09-25-2005 01:56 PM

Im afraid Im going to have to do what will be seen as the "trendy" thing to do, and pick Nirvana. For so many reasons. I love em to bits and they deserve every last bit of the credit they get. If I hear any "over-rated" comments, Ill say what I always say, and tell you that along with great fucking songwriting skills, they were also about the impact they made.

Ok Ill hush.. But you get the point. I vote Nirvana.

The 2 bands that saved the UK from having to spend 10 years listening to grunge like they did in the US

Josephine 09-25-2005 02:09 PM

Yeah, I wondered about that too...

OASIS AND THE STONE ROSES!!!

If it weren't for them, the 90's would have been crap...
I mean, they're not the only ones, but they're a very important part of the 90's Brit Pop scene... I mean The Stone Roses kinda invented Brit Pop and Oasis followed. Thank god they did. Otherwise The Beatles might be dead...

Expletive Deleted 09-25-2005 02:18 PM

Did you completely miss out on Britpop or something?

What? Two pages, and no "Nirvana-is-overrated" argument in sight? Good God!!! :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

Anyway, my favorite 90's band would be Radiohead, I think. Off of the list, I'd take Nirvana.

Kempson 09-26-2005 01:41 AM

I wouldn't chose any of those bands.

Merkaba 09-26-2005 03:03 AM

Neither.

Pearl Jam was good, Ten was good, Vitalogy was good, the rest was dry and bland, and their Greatest hits is such an overkill. I like Nirvana but they aren't my "best big" cup of tea. As with Smashing Pumpkins. Rage would have been a good choice.

I would love to say Pantera but off the list I'm gonna go with RHCP, they are the soldiers of the 90's to me....from the options given.

boo boo 09-26-2005 09:16 PM

Gotta be Nirvana, followed by Radiohead.

In terms of whos the best, i guess, in terms of greatness though i would give it to nirvana, i dunno, a tie maybe?

DontRunMeOver 09-27-2005 09:02 AM

Doesn't look like Pearl Jam are as popular, does it! Overall I'd pick Nirvana as my favourite, because I feel like the singing kind of lets The Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins down (specifically the lyrics for RHCP and Corgan's voice for Pumpkins). I'm not saying that the singing is terrible for these bands, but its not really up to the same standard as the music.

DontRunMeOver 09-27-2005 09:02 AM

Whereas Cobain's voice was absolutely brilliant.

WOAH now, RHCP's singing and lyrics lets them down?! Hell no, Anthony Kiedis was effing fantastic for them. Both vocally and lyrically, I wouldnt say he let them down at all...

Sneer 09-27-2005 03:47 PM

Radiohead and Massive attack.

pearl jam- my god no
chilli peppers- my god no
smashing pumpkins- fair enough, i dig siamase dream and the greatest hits
nirvana- fair enough, nevermind and in utero are two very good albums.

Fucking aye. The Peppers kicked arse in that department, in every department, some people.

Kempson 09-28-2005 04:18 AM

Anthony Kiedis is a legend. Anybody read his biography? That's such a good book. I don't think the RHCP lyrics let them down, infact the lyrics kicked butt. I can't get enough of 'Under The Bridge', 'Otherside' or 'Californication'.

I dont think Corgans voice puts the pumpkins down at all...His voice is like Axls and Geddys which is either you love it or you hate it, i personaly like corgans voice, in fact, pretty much all i listened to today was smashing pumpkins, his voice was part of what made the band...Im not one of those people who can really like a band if i dont like the vocals, mainly why i can't stand a huge portion of Death Metal bands.

MURDER JUNKIE 09-28-2005 05:19 AM

i really liked Gruntruck in the 90's

I've got to agree with that viewpoint. What you said about Corgan's voice being 'Love it or Hate it' is almost what brings it down for me. I love the Pumpkins music, the instruments, the arrangements and lyrics, but do find that I hate Corgan's voice which brings the music down for me. If he had a more boring, middle of the road voice I'd probably prefer it.

I stick by my opinion on Kiedis within the Chilli Peppers. Again, I'm not saying that he can't sing or write lyrics, but he's backed by what I'd say was the best contemporary rhythm section around, when he's definitely not the best singer or lyricist around. What I mean is that I wouldn't go out and buy an Anthony Kiedis solo acoustic album.

DontRunMeOver 09-29-2005 03:25 AM

Would you?

TheBig3 10-01-2005 05:08 PM

I'll say that I gave Pearl Jam thier one vote. And this is for a couple reasons.

To me, they had the skill, the passion and the topical message that made liking them have some purpose. They championed ideas and frankly, bands with opinions matter a little more to me. Theres alot of people on here who are appauled by them and I jsut don't know why. Songs like "why go home" "go" "given to fly" and "courderoy" are probably some of the most impassioned songs I've heard from any band. I don't mind that you don't like them, but to react to them as if their The Whirlwind Heat or Crazytown just isn't fair and you know it. Pretty decent solos, soild vocals, meaningful lyrics, and a dedication to the fan base that rivals any band live or dead. Why Pearl Jam doesn't sit well in the mouths of Brits is beyond me, but the ones that show up here seem to have an affinty toward pop more than rock. Fair enough, but to discredit a band that makes so many people react is a band you should **** on because you personally don't like it.

And to the one guy who said Ten and Vitalogy were good but failed to mention Vs., which was better than both aforementioned, well, I don't know where you get off sir, I just don't.

People here don`t hate Pearl Jam , they just don`t care about them. They were never that big a deal here. A couple of the songs off 10 did OK , but thats about it.Don`t be fooled into thinking all we cared about at the time were Blur & Oasis , there were some great British bands around in the mid 90s.
You have to understand in the mid 90s Britain wanted to party after being so bloody miserable for over a decade, and bands like Pearl Jam and the whole grunge hangover from the US just didn`t fit the bill.
Don`t take it personally , it took the US over a decade to get The Smiths & The Cure , maybe in a decade people will be saying 'wow Pearl Jam are an awesome band , Yeald is the best album ever made , how DID we miss this'

TheBig3 10-01-2005 11:04 PM

Fair enough except for the well cloaked stab at the US. I don't really recall the Cure and the Smiths begin as well respected here as say mid-80's crap like Jackson and Madonna.

The only huge 80's musician I will give respect to is Prince. And Neither of those three were especially depressed.

Aside from that we had super happy, good ol' boy Hair Metal. So to assume we still needed our depression isn't exactly on the mark.

I'll accept not caring to a degree, but to say "oh god no" in lieu of "too boring" doesn't say to me lack of affection. I think Radiohead are too spacy most of the time, but I don't disregard them as a great group who can throw down when they want. I don't see why people can't go "god I hate them, but they do have talent."

Merkaba 10-02-2005 12:30 AM

^ Eddie Vedder is still one of my favourite vocalists. Stone Gossard's rythem in Dissident is a favourite of mine also.

beardovstars 10-03-2005 12:29 AM

kyuss
smashing pumpkins suck btw

Merkaba 10-03-2005 02:34 AM

Kyuss are the coolest but they weren't big. So, unfortunately, they don't really count.

TheBig3 10-03-2005 07:51 PM

And no one would know tem if QOTSA didn't hit. Thats the truth.

imspiderman 10-03-2005 10:22 PM

PearlJam, then Peppers, then Nirvana

Partially, it was original support from Nirvana and Metallica that put them on the map. Kyuss were fairly well known long before QOTSA pointed some of their limelight upon them.
