Who gives a **** if STP is grunge or not?

This is the Soundgarden thread.

With that said, I can't wait to see their performance at Lollapalooza.

I really, really hope they debut their new song at Lollapalooza. I'm sure as hell not buying that new Guitar Hero game to hear it.

It's so weird to me that Soundgarden is lumped in with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains. To me, they musically share very few traits with those three bands, even if they were getting big at the same time, and from the same place.

Used to only like bits and pieces of Soundgarden, but over the years, they've grown on me. One of those band I put down for years at one point in time, and picked up again, appreciating more than when I first listened.

Very decent Hard Rock band. Nothing too deep, but Spoonman, Limo Wreck, Blackhole Sun, Outshined, and Burden in my Hand will always be true classics in my eyes. Even have a taste for "Room a 1000 years wide".

Albeit, anything else Chris Cornell has ever done(especially his solo work) blows.

I agree. In fact, I don't remember ever hearing them referred to as grunge back in the early 90s, I'm pretty sure they were generally regarded as metal. So were Alice in Chains for that matter.

I really like Spoonman and Black Hole Sun... don't really know much else. I probably do, actually, I just didn't know it was Soundgarden. I'm pretty mainstream when it comes to grunge. Mostly just know the stuff that's played on the radio.

I'm not sure when or where AIC and Soundgarden got lumped into the grunge scene, but in the end, there's just not enough that seperates them from other grunges bands to avoid the label.

That being said, while AIC and Soundgarden were both on the heavier side of grunge, if you think about it, it's still grunge. It came from the American Northwest in the late 80's/early 90's and featured a similar sound to other bands in the area. They also shared the stage with a lot of "cliche grunge bands", which doesn't exactly set them apart from the scene.

The most important thing to remember here is that grunge was a "scene" before it was a genre, and Soundgarden were an integral part of that scene. So they're grunge.

Soundgarden is classified in the Heavy Metal and Alternative Metal genres also, "if that sounds any better" than Grunge, formed in 1984 Cris Cornell was lead vocalist and the drummer, until Matt Cameron took over on drums in '86.
In my opinion, Kim Thayil is underrated as a lead guitarist, and that Soungarden was one of the main bands that 'Defined Grunge' music within the 90s (in my opinion), especially more so after Ben Shepard replaced original bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1990, Soundgardenrden enveloped Alternative Rock of the 90s into the Grunge sound/Seattle Sound with their style of music, other main contemporaries were Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam.
Soundgarden set the standard for grunge music in '94 with the release of their album Superunknown, and so on into the next decade.
Post-Grunge is a subject Im not to familiar with, or pay very much attention to if it is 'splitting hairs' a little too much (as to say), although I do agree with the band Bush as having a post-grunge sound as so suggested, but Im not 'so sure' about STP labeled as post-grunge.

I don`t ever think of Kim Thayil as being an underrated guitar player.
