Very understandable, I realize most of his solos on electric are kind of monotonous and neanderthal[ish] but definately check out his accoustic stuff; it might change your mind duder.

Still wouldn't consider him the best or greatest, but he gained a few points.

Being great, to a certain point, is about personal preference. When I hear Zakk play (especially live) it blows me away, he amazes me with technical ability AS WELL AS the emotion he uses (see book of shadows for reference).
Petrucci does absolutely nothing for me, like Malmsteen. He's fast, as all hell, but when he plays it's like he's saying, "hey look how fast and perfect I can play" whereas with other guitar players whom I like it's like, "hey, this is how I was feeling at the time I played and recorded this."
The combination of emotion and ability is rare IMO.

But then again, David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitar players ever; and that has nothing to do with technical ability or speed.
It's a bit harsh to say that about Petrucci if you haven't heard much by him. For example, his song Glasgow Kiss is pretty cool - it carries emotion IMO.

I had my Petrucci phase. His saving grace, I.E. why he's so much better than other technical shredders, is that he has GREAT melodic ability. But watching him play...=/ he always has this look on his face like "hey, I'm better than you will ever possibly be"
I mean, watch the G3 DVD with Vai, Sach, and him. It's just unfullfilling.
DT is very impressive, being a drummer I know this as well as anyone. The ability to go through so many time signatures so fast is rare and incredible, but that doesn't make it satisfying. And for a band or music to be great it must be satisfying and enjoyable, not simply technically masterful.

Just my opinion.
