Now, what is Post-Metal? I've heard the term, but don't know what it is or what bands fall under this category.

Bands that are hybrids of post rock and metal such as Pelican or Isis.

If I'm looking to start listening to some metal, which bands should I check out first? I dig Zeppelin quite a bit, so should I proceed to Black Sabbath? I listen to a variety of other genres of music, expect metal, so I'd like to venture into it a bit. Anything like instrumental metal bands? Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc bands?

Thanks.

Post-metal generally isn't that great, but bands like Agalloch and Opeth frequently abandon lyrical work for compositional efforts. Bear in mind that I am by no means a metalhead. I recommend:

Opeth - Morningrise
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Agalloch - The Mantle
Meshuggah - obZen
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Slayer - Reign in Blood

Takes care of progressive, black, death, power and thrash metal.

Post Metal? Oh joy, yet another fucking sub genre of a sub genre.

Mostly Power Metal for me.

1. Gamma Ray
2. Blind Guardian
3. Edguy
4. Kamelot
5. Judas Prist
6. Black Sabbath (with Dio)
7. Sentenced
8. Rhapsody
9. Power Quest
10. Sirenia

Right on, thank you. I'll check it out. The main reason I've never enjoyed metal is because of the vocalists. I find it difficult to deal with the screaming to be honest.

Judas Priest for instance does not irritate me and apparently neither does Black Sabbath- their earlier stuff.

I'm going to see about Iron Maiden next.

LOL. But seriously Pelican at least is a really amazing band, despite being part of yet another metal subgenre.

I like all sorts of Metal but I just can't keep up with the endless genres. Why not call bands such as Agalloch (who are awesome) Ambient Metal?

I dunno, but you are the resident metal fan, and I can't seem to find your top ten.

Care to resubmit?

It's boring as hell:

(No Order)

Iron Maiden until '88.
Black Sabbath
Slayer
Agalloch
Megadeth
Dog Fashion Disco
Voivod
Gojira
Ministry
Saxon (guilty pleasure)
