Why post in the thread then?

Watching Emperor live In London 1999 on DVD right now.

Amazing! The drum intro to one of the old tracks is mind-blowing.

Because trolling is hilarious!

Emperor is pretty awesome. I haven't heard any live albums of theirs but their first studio album is fantastic.

I love black metal. I'm currently listening to Fanisk, their album Noontide is a masterpiece.

Americans/people in the USA (I think it's only been shown in the USA): have you seen the documentary Until the Light Takes Us? I can't wait to get my hands on it.

i'm not a giant fan of black metal, but i will listen on occasion. i actually like the vocals...the black metal growl is a form of singing all its own and it truly is one of those things where if someone doesn't like it, they just don't understand it. or they really don't like loud aggressive music.

i always keep mayhem's de mysteris dom sathanis on my ipod just so when people ask about black metal, i'll stick that on and explain the ol' mayhem story to them. gets people very intrigued.

Well, I always said I hate death metal but... two months ago I found music of Opeth and I started to love them :)
Now I think I just didn't understand why growl, what?! Now I can listen to it although it's now too new for me. I am not sure if I will listen to more than Opeth or not.
Or.... does somebody know some melodic death / black metal band also with some normal singing? Something like Opeth?

as a general rule, it is not black metal unless you have the growl...in fact i know people who get upset if you can understand the lyrics. maybe that is not the norm...it is just what i have seen in a few cases. opeth is not exactly black metal, either...he is more just progressive metal who likes to use all ranges of metal. so...opeth is fairly out there with originality, unfortunately.

Ok, thank you for your explanation! Maybe Opeth can be some first step to this music... But I am not sure, I need some time to get to used to growl.

i live in canada and there's screenings of it on the 23rd and 28th. i'll probably go see it even though i don't listen to a huge amount of early black metal.

Opeth are death metal with a lot of mellow acoustic parts and as time went by they incoporated influences from prog in general. Melodic death metal (mostly Swedish bands as opposed to US death metal bands) mixes in clean vocals with the death growl and also offer far more variation on sound, listen to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity just to name two. In fact "Whoracle" by In Flames is probably the finest album of the melodic death metal scene. There are also prog bands like Amorphis which are influenced by death metal but are exclusively clean vocals with a lot of normal rock and other influences.

An album I recommend, which predates the mellow approach by Opeth by a number of years is Tiamat`s "Wildhoney" certainly more prog than death metal and the group draw influences from death and black metal in general.

@Unknown Soldier - thank you!
I need diversity and it seems I could find it in your recommendations, I will try it ;)

Burzum, Emperor, Enslaved, Wolves In The Throne Room, Woods Of Desolation, Xasthur, Mayhem, Wedard, Nychts, Crucifix d.ildo

That Tiamat album is great, definitely worth checking out if you haven't before.

I like more melodic metal, like Children of Bodom, I love Opeth, especially Ghost Reveries. Bands like Mayhem don't appeal to me at all, though I do like me some southern death metal, like Deicide, Obituary, and though theyr'e not from the same region, Cannibal Corpse's Gallery of Suicide is a fine album indeed.

Children of Bodom also have a very heavy power metal influence as well.

itt people who do not listen to black metal make off-topic posts about random metal bands they like.
