Well that's because it is their best work.

Empyrium
Limbonic Art
I haven't gotten around to hearing all of those, but Agalloch and Drudkh regularly make their way to my speakers around winter time. They just seem to evoke the desolate aspects of the season perfectly. Last weekend I brought some blankets out on my back porch and lay there watching the night sky with Autumn Aurora on my headphones... it was magnificent.

My top 3 black metal bands are Bathory, Dimmu Borgir (omg ther not tr00 black metvl... whatever) and Darkthrone. There are others I play in moderation but those guys are my Unholy Trinity.

I just got Dimmu Borgir's Stormblast, and I quite like it. I don't see what everyone hates about them

Well there's always the elitist crowd that bitches about them "selling out", but a far more legitimate complaint has to do with the way their sound changed in the 2000s. The production on their albums just got extremely noisy and out of balance. The drums especially sound horrible - there's a kind of clickiness to the bass drums. Also their songwriting has gotten progressively worse on each album since Spiritual Black Dimensions to the point that they're practically unlistenable now. I honestly cannot sit through In Sorte Diaboli without wanting to rip my ears off. They sure rocked ass in the '90s though.

Btw, which version of Stormblast did you get - the 1996 original, or the 2005 re-recording?

I love black metal in its more melodic/epic forms...bands like Emperor, Windir, Enslaved, Borknagar...

Am I the only one who thinks that Mayhem is ridiculously overrated? In my honest opinion they got by on their reputation morre than the music.

I think you have to look at Mayhem more from a performance standpoint than a creativity one. From what I've listened to (mainly Live in Leipzig and DMDS), there's not a shred of creativity in their music, but they play it really viciously. Take that for what you think it's worth, but overall they probably are pretty overrated just because of all the backstory behind the band.

I've never heard the original Stormblast. I've got the re-release, and I like it. Death Cult is my favorite album from those guys, though.

I really hated Bathory growing up but I have recently really gotten into them, although I disliked Hammerheart a lot. Blood, Fire and Death is where it's at for me.

If Meshuggah counts then that's the only band I've heard. Well call them Progressive Black Metal or something. I still don't know where they sit?
