Stone Temple Pilots
surprisingly enough, i couldn't find a thread dedicated to this once awsome band.
i got into them via my sister, or rather my mid sister's junkie boyfriend, back when i was a wee lad of some 14 years. Core is in my humble opinion a classic album of the 90's, alongside with Nirvana's Nevermind, one of the rare pure 10 albums in my collection. however, i have not heard their other albums as i fear they do not hold a candle to Core, can anyone verify? |
Yeah album 3 was hit or miss, 4 and five sucked, but I think Purple was amazing.
Thats where you find interstate love song, vasoline, big empty, and unglued. |
Core is probably my favorite, Purple is great too.
yeah definitely check out purple and No. 4 wasn't bad either. Purple is almost genius!
Stone temple pilots are okay i guess.....
For the era they strived in they were good! One of the better 90's rock acts in my opinion!
Core is the best, I haven't listened to that in a long time...
Looks like I'll have to dig it out, I'm in an STP mood. |
I've read that people think them to be just a rip off band to Pearl Jam. And quite frankly, I don't hear the resemblance at all. I like just about everything I've heard from them.
Yeah, I like STP.
Yea too bad Scott Weiland went over to Velvet Revolver. That band sucks ass. Both bands were awsome but Guns N' Roses doesnt mix well with STP.
Core is a great album but Purple is incredible. I wouldn't say mindblowing like Nevermind was but lyrically, Purple is better than Core. Although Core rocks harder. I agree that # 3 was hit and miss with a couple of really good songs but also some really bad ones. I never got into # 4 or 5.
i hear that theyre going to be opening for velvet revolver.
stp is awesome but i think vr is rather horrible |
Stone Temple Pilots
if u listen to STP, especially their tiny music album, they definitely show a very jazzy side in much of their rock. however, they fit so many other genres that theynever really got their props in the jazz rock world. who agrees?

What Jazz do you think they are similar to? |
They are not jazz in any shape.
Yeahhhhh....one of the great 90's bands, but no not jazz.
Their guitarist uses lots of jazz chord voicings. That might be where he got the jazz idea or maybe the blues since everything is either folk or blues influneced (in rock that is)
I can see what he means, since they use alot of mellow riffs. But still no, not jazz....some songs might be categorized as soft rock.
Either way they still kick arse. |
yeah i don't listen to much jazz but perhaps soft rock is a better term. sorry if i offended any true jazz fans lol. but yes their guitar styles in a few songs are what made me consider them to have some jazz influences. but u guys would prolly know better then me, so i'll take ur word for it.
Yeah, I love any band that has those softer songs. STP definately has some good riffs to fit the description too.
Hey this thread should be moved. Nobody is talking about Jazz at all !! put it back in rock where it belongs.
i hate soft songs lol...
but ermm not jazz |
stp jazz?
perhaps i need to listen more deeply? i don't see them as jazz.

To those of you who felt the need to open-mindedly say "their not jazz", maybe next time try to make an argument a little better since its a little easier to side with "no". |
Many bands incorperate Jazz elements but are not Jazz, and I still vaguely recall that STP are not one of them, but I could be wrong, maybe they did a fusion album no one knows about, lol.
Core is a staple in early 90's rock..I think it should be in everyone's collection..it simply rocks. Seeing Velvet Revolver live..made me a believer..Scott is just an amazing voice..
STP's Core and Purple are amazing! (That secret song gets a little old though)
Can't say I thought much of the rest of their albums (apart from a few songs) and Velvet Revolver, well I just don't like 'em. |
As much as I love the Grunge era I could never get into STP. None of their songs were awsome, I have their Core album but none of the songs were great to me. I've tried listening to their Tiny Music........Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop album and still couldn't get into their music. Any requests to try to help see what has been missed.
Core was the best album they ever had
never really got into them. But i haven't checked out all their albums, i thought "half the man i used to be" was a cool song though, that managed to be catchy and not too-poppy
I think I feel pretty much the opposite of most people. I prefer their later albums as they sound more genuine and less forced.
I might be alone on this one but I felt their later albums were less interesting than their earlier albums. Might be just me:(

They weren'tcnsidered one of the better bands at the time but I think listening to them now they had some really good stuff. |
Sex type thing is probably the first song my new band are going to end up covering, amazing song.
i like trippin on a hole in a paper heart (mind you, the whole of Thank You was good)
Good yes but not great compared to Purple,Tiny Music, Core and No.4. That album wasn't even in the ball park.
Core, is a decent album, though not on par with the upper tier Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc albums. The material isn't as original as the aforementioned bands, which IMO groups them with up and coming bands that used the GRUNGE genre to great commercial success.
But for STP standards it was their best album granted they are no where near AIC, Soundgarden or any other band I feel STP aren't even in the same ball park as them. But you can't take away Core being their best album of all of the other albums.
i <3 STP core was their best album sex type thing was the best song
