screamed my lungs out, when they played Lost in Hollywood live!

Wait what? I don't think that's true at all...

MOST of their music had a very political message. Soldier side, deer dance, Boom!, and Nuguns were all anti-war songs or anti-military.

Yeah some of their songs like radio/video were just silly, but for virtually every "silly" song they do at least two "serious" songs.

Even at their "silliest", SOAD is usually trying to prove a point. I think people get the wrong idea when they listen to select lyrics, along with the tone of Serj's vocals, which are admittedly very eccentric-sounding. I think they definitely take themselves seriously, not that it really makes much of a difference to me.

I think he meant they had a willingness to show their sense of humor in their music where most metal bands take themselves too seriously.

Hey what do you classify SOAD as genre-wise? I like referring to them as progressive metal, but I really don't know.

They're kind of all over the place...

Alternative Metal.

Love the breakdown in the middle.

With silly I meant not only the silly lyricly, but also musicly. His style of singing for example is pretty silly, which adds to the charm. Or what about the intro of this song itself? I do know they have more serious songs though, and that their songs have some underlying seriousness to them.
Just listen to the vocals to this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR2CX3uJzIE

Come on, no odd time signatures, I can't recall any songs that were much longer than 6 minutes in length, and even 5+ is pretty rare for them as I recall. I can't really think of any reason they'd be prog metal.

I just list them as alternative.

I would call them alternative rock also. They played every major festival in sight after Toxicity came out. I saw them at Family Values tour and they played with Limp Bizkit/Filter/Primus/Korn/Method Man/Red Man, so popular/sellout applies also.
