Since this is rock and metal forum, my favorite females in that category are both Lizzy Hale/Halestorm and Taylor Momsen/The Pretty Reckless, who did amazing
 tribute to Chris Cornell (RIP)Warning/Spoiler: it is heartbreaking - and Halestorm (like Evanescence) (Britney Spears on 'roids) I love Emily Haines of Metric, too, but I wouldn't include her in this category, as Metric are indie/alternative/synthpop/rock.

Corin Tucker - has more sonic violence than any death metal singer I've heard
Poly Styrene - like Corin but with added hoarseness, which is always nice, and a British accent, which is nice too Janis Joplin - pain: the voice Carrie Brownstein - the definitive punk scream, and a very charismatic, recognisable voice, almost an accent Courtney Barnett - not so much her voice (which is pleasant enough) but her phrasing/delivery. There's a lot of intelligence and wit in it, that's what really makes her songs for me Debbie Harry - chrystal clear and gorgeous Kim Deal - I've seen someone on youtube call her voice a human saxophone reed, I think that's pretty accurate Kathleen Hanna - loud, hoarse and obnoxious, can go from schoolgirl to banshee in an instant

As a starting reference point...ahh, first possible comparison I thought of is The Chromatics - Been honing their chops a couple years- Prediction: will break big in '19
