Mr. Bungle are basically the musical version of Monty Python.

swim 07-13-2006 09:49 PM

That's not a bad thing.

boo boo 07-13-2006 09:51 PM

Of course not.

In fact most of Tool's guitar and bass solos (when there are any, which is rare) are very brief and simple in comparison to the whole structure of the song, when Jones or Chancellor do solo, it almost always fits the song... And the only truly technical member of the group is their drummer, Danny Carey.

Tool's music is more about the intensity and build up than anything else, they do use complex structures, but so do Radiohead, and they are by no means virtuosos.... In short, complexity dosen't always equal amazing technical skill.

Where in the hell did I say I disliked them because they were too technical?
If they`re not a technical band why even bring that up?
In fact where did I say I disliked them?

I simply said I didn`t see what was so special about them. All I was doing was responding to beat yr own KID`s post , telling him that it wasn`t just him that had his veiwpoint and that I could see where he was coming from. Now I don`t know the guy well but he seems a decent enough guy it`s not like we walked into this thread coming out with stuff like 'OMG TOOL R TEH SUCK'.
My opinion of the band was made from listening to 3 of their albums , and I would imagine from him posts that he came to that conclusion from listening to them too.
If someone walked into a Radiohead thread and said they didn`t like them because they found Thom Yorkes vocals too whiney I could understand where they were coming from even though I do love the band myself.

His reasoning for disliking Tool is similar to his statements about Pearl Jam, U2 and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Yes in that i`ve listened to them & don`t like them very much

He seems to mostly prefer more pop/rock n roll oriented bands in the mold of David Bowie, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones... But that's only my observation, the guy might be a Napalm Death fan for all i know.
No offence Boo Boo but where the fuck did you pull this out from? I guess you must have missed all the other stuff that I like. Did we not have a discussion about the merits of Krautrock just a week or so ago? , And just get those great power chords on those Scott Walker & Nick Drake albums I own , and didn`t I just write a fair amount on two albums Brian Eno was involved in?Hell I even went out & listened to ELP`s Brain Salad Surgery & thought it was OK , all on your recommendation. I could go on & on but it`s obvious I only go on about the Stones & Bowie.

I could see how someone might think Thom's vocals are whiney, but saying that "most of [Tool's] songs are kinda like the same sludgy drone with bits added to it to make it a little different" after listening to three of their albums makes no sense at all.

one_more_atrocity 07-14-2006 10:21 AM

got to be AEnima for me.

Well it`s been a while since I listened to any Tool , maybe a good 5 or 6 years.
So I dug out my copy of Aenima just to see if I was being overly harsh on them.

Maybe I was , however listening to it I found the majority of the album was made out of chugging riffs which turns me off straight away , and also done to death whisper/shout vocals , something else thats a personal annoyance with me. Had I been 13/14 years old I would have lapped this stuff up , but not now.
I can see why fans of that type of music would rate them so highly ,there is obvious talent there. But on the whole I don`t think what I said originally was that far wrong. It might be a harsh assessment of them but it`s not an ill informed one.

I would say it is, but there's no point in arguing about it.

Lateralus for me, by the way.

Fair enough, no worries then.

Thats why i said it was only my observation, i don't know jack sh*t about your tastes, i can only base an opinion on what i have observed from your comments, and i already acknowledged that, i know you like Krautrock, and it's nice to know you like Eno.

Speaking of which, have you heard Another Green World yet?

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-14-2006 03:19 PM

Not yet , I`ve got Here Come The Warm Jets & Taking Tiger Mountain. I have a burned copy of Music For Airports somewhere too.

Another Green World & Before & After Science are next on the list.

bungalow 07-14-2006 03:24 PM

I've yet to hear a Tool song that intrests me.

swim 07-14-2006 03:29 PM

But sex and hating god isn't your thing? Just curious, have you only heard singles?

bungalow 07-14-2006 03:32 PM

Well I own 10,000 Days, and I can't bring myself to listen to all of it.
And I don't understand the first part of your post.

Is that what Tool songs are about?

swim 07-14-2006 03:38 PM

I suggest giving AEnima a listen it's the most listener friendly album they've put out and, yea there are quite a few Tool songs about hating god and but sex.

They can be. Knowing your veiws on religion I can't see why you wouldn't be entertained by some of their songs. Maynard is well known for his disection of religion.

Aenima, the song, you might like. Cleverly bashes a lot of what is corrupt in the world, and constantly delivers what is commonly referred to as their motto. Here, take it.

*Insert your Bungalowbill insult here*

They're becoming interchangable.

And i don't care what anyone says, Stinkfist is NOT strictly about anal fisting.

Mephistopheles 07-14-2006 09:11 PM

Yeah I think the meaning behind Stinkfist is more than just anal fisting, thought I'm not sure what it is exactly. I think a lot of Tool songs can be interpreted in different ways, just like the one mentioned.

Merkaba 07-14-2006 09:27 PM

I think it's about densensitization. Look up densesitize (or however you spell it) and that should make things a little clearer. But the anal imagery is quite clever too, well, funny at least.

NVM, I'm not dumb at all.
How should I know.

Merkaba 07-14-2006 09:38 PM

Yeah don't be hard on yourself.

I mean... your the only one in history to have ever got it wrong, but you know, theres still time for someone else to do it.;):D

bungalow 07-14-2006 09:42 PM

Well, if i was going to give you an album, and change the "tt" to "xx" i wouldn't rename it.

I would post it like this

not

Raine 07-15-2006 04:21 AM

I voted Aenima

explosions-in-my-pants 07-15-2006 10:39 AM

I voted for AEnima, Its a good album, amazing songs on that, some of there best for that matter.

as for there new album, I can't belive that was a choice, I mean can anyone actually say thats ther favorite tool album? don't people have ears and realize that there sound and his voice and everything on that album compared to the other tool albums is crap? I mean the album doesn't suck completely but its just not good compared to the past records.. too much of a perfect circle was in the new tool album.

swim 07-15-2006 10:43 AM

Billy and Adam sound nothing alike. Maynard wasn't even there when Adam was writing for 10,000 Days. It's progression whether you like it or not. I hate when bands practically put the same album 3 times. And, people's voice's mature. He can't help that. It has been five years since Lateralus was released. He put out 3 other albums and went on tour. That's a lot of singing.

cardboard adolescent 07-15-2006 11:50 AM

It's not really progression though... I mean, from Aenima to Lateralus was serious progression. In 10,000 Days it sounds like they're trying to re-hash all their old styles in one album and add in tons of weird time signatures because "Meshuggah did it." In the end, it's pretty cool, but not very compelling.

Anyway, that's my opinion on it now that it's sunk in.

boo boo 07-15-2006 09:22 PM

Well, i found their latest single disapointing.

So because his voice matured as you say.. so i can't say this album wasn't very good.. because of that reasoning? No i don't think so, his voice changed and not for the better.. they can't recreated the past albums. They honestly sound more like a perfect circle now, then tool.. and as for his voice, it doesn't even sound anything like him.. well not really. This is completely disapointing to my ears.. I'm a fan of both bands but I new this was going to happen to tool, its bound to happen to all bands.

Stone Magnet 07-16-2006 02:03 PM

Quote:

The anal sex references are just metaphors. "Opiate" isn't about hating God, it's about how Christianity is forced down our throats.

Quote:

everything on that album compared to the other tool albums is crap
The point is not to compare it to other Tool albums. Undertow is nothing like Ænima, Ænima is nothing like Lateralus, Lateralus is nothing like 10,000 Days, etcetera. They've changed quite a bit over the past ten years, and each album seems to expand on its predecessor. You seem to be expecting them to record Ænima II, yet if they did, you'd accuse them of rehashing old material and claiming that they've 'run out of ideas'. It's lose-lose with people like you.

Quote:

Well, i found their latest single disapointing.
I wasn't sure about it at first either, but it grows on you. They're certainly not a singles band.

Quote:

his voice changed and not for the better
His voice is fine, he's just not flaunting it as much on 10,000 Days. He decided to experiment with a few different vocal styles, and I can completely understand why. Doing the same vocals over and over on each album would become rather tedious.

Quote:

they can't recreated the past albums
That's the exact opposite of what they want to do. That's the exact opposite of what every band should do.

Quote:

They honestly sound more like a perfect circle now, then tool
10,000 Days doesn't sound like A Perfect Circle at all, nor does it sound identical to Tool in 2001; it expanded on Lateralus just as Lateralus expanded on Ænima.

Quote:

as for his voice, it doesn't even sound anything like him
Yes, it does. It sounds exactly like him. All you seem to be going on about is Maynard's voice - you do know that there are three other members in the band, right?

idowhatiamtold 07-18-2006 09:45 AM

Aenima talks to me. :)

boo boo 07-18-2006 10:47 AM

Fun fact: Ænima is a combination of the word "Anima", which is latin for soul, and "Enema", which is an anal cleansing procedure... Thus creating a brand new word, meaning "Cleansing Of The Soul".

:( I was hopin' it would be like the Soul Of Anal Cleaning or something..>.>

Merkaba 07-18-2006 06:10 PM

If anyone wants another inside line on Aenima they should hunt filesharing programs for a live version of Aenima that is roughly 7.30 in length.

This live version gives a wee bit of a hint at the start of the song, Maynard mentions a psychologist called Carl Jung, and a thing called Hycholonics(?).

Good luck finding anything about it, Googles never heard of that word...providing I spelt it right.

Infact I'll upload it now...

Levithan 07-18-2006 06:13 PM

I can only go by what ive heard...So 10,000 days...Great album...Will have to download Ænima...
