Who has the best scream in metal?

Ok guys, the title is pretty self explanatory IMO it would be out of Corey Taylor and Max Calvera, but having said that Max has an awesome scream, but Corey can sing softly as well... Hmm pretty hard competition.

Post your favourites!

Seltzer 08-04-2006 04:22 AM

Probably the vocalists in Wormphlegm. They have the most torturous screaming ever.

Apart from that, Chuck Schuldiner (Death) has the best scream in my books. You just have to listen to their cover of Painkiller to see that.

Devin Townsend (SYL) and Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) also worth a mention. I'll probably add some more in later. Maybe I should make a thread for the best growl in metal...

Cheese 08-04-2006 04:31 AM

Ian Gillan

Sound Devastation 08-04-2006 07:26 AM

coming up second would be Alan Dubin from Khanate.

Stone Magnet 08-04-2006 11:14 AM

Jens Kidman, Phil Anselmo, Layne Staley, Maynard James Keenan.

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 12:46 PM

Lenzig from Cephalic Carnage

DearJenny 08-04-2006 12:59 PM

Devin Townsend

I think he's amazing.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-04-2006 01:01 PM

Rob Halford

Dunno what his voice is like now though

MoonlitSunshine 08-04-2006 01:11 PM

I don't like it when screaming is over-used in Metal, so I can't really comment in this thread. Although Phillip Anselmo's good.

DearJenny 08-04-2006 01:14 PM

If it's even considered a loose form of metal, David Draiman has a pretty good scream.

Laces Out Dan! 08-04-2006 02:55 PM

Devin Townsend FTW

Trauma 08-04-2006 03:16 PM

Max Cavalera from Soulfly
So good

swim 08-04-2006 04:02 PM

Mikael Akerfeldt, I think I spelled that right I can't be arse to look it up.

I mentioned Calvera because I love his voice:) And Dramien's voice is and always has been awesome

The reason I started this thread is because Soulfly did a song with Corey from Slipknot called Jumpda****up and it was one absolutely awesome song, and they went together perfectly:)

I have to agree with Urban on Rob Halford. Runner up goes to Dani of Cradle of Filth

Ace 08-04-2006 09:34 PM

1. Maynard James Keenan
2. Corey Taylor
3. Phil Anselmo
4. Layne Staley

Pretty much what stone magnent said.

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 09:37 PM

None of those guys are in Metal bands though

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 09:41 PM

Maynard James Keenan = Tool = maybe. A few songs are so-so. On the whole calling them anything other than alt. rock is misleading

Corey Taylor = Slipknot = Nu-"metal" isn't metal

Phile Anselmo = Pantera = again arguable. Thrash at times, southern groove rock other times.

Layne Staley = Alice In Chains = the only Grunge band worth a damn. Not metal.

so my statement is true enough.

Ace 08-04-2006 09:43 PM

Thanks for clearing that up, Stone Magnent.
Alot of people are forgetting the way metal used to be, and seldom thought of now, thanks to having to jump on the "death/black metal" train. There are only a few bands in that genre that I would consider good. My opinion of most metal now adays.

Garbage.

I like all kinds. I even like some Alice In Chains.

but calling something Metal cause it sounds "heavy" or different than radio rock is misleading and wrong.

by the by, Bruce Dickinson is one of my favorite vocalist of all time.

Power Metal vocals > all

No, it isn't. You can't listen to Ænima/Lateralus/10,000 Days and not call them a progressive metal band.

Nu-"metal" isn't metal
Whether or not you like it, yes it is.

You're a complete idiot if you don't think Pantera was a thrash metal band. Sorry, but come on...

Quote:

"Grunge" is hardly an actual genre. It was a label slapped on any rock/metal band that came out of Seattle at the time. The 'Big 4' Grunge bands sound nothing alike. Alice In Chains were a metal band. You don't have to sound like Cannibal Corpse to be a metal band. It's one of the more diverse genres out there.

swim 08-04-2006 09:51 PM

This isn't completely relevant but just something that I've thought for a long time. In my mind there is grunge-punk and grunge-metal. Grunge punk would be Nirvana, Meat Puppets, Melvins, stuff like that. Grunge metal would be Soundgarden, AIC, Pearl Jam and stuff like that.

1. I listened to all of Lateralus. Besides hating myself for doing so, I found no major similarities. It's like calling Pink Floyd a metal band for doing something different than their peers that had a "bass heavy" sound

2. No, it's not. It's a misapplied term. Nu-Metal is completely grounded in hip-hop. It's missing all the major metal components.

3. I'm biased, so I hesitate to give them the label. Older stuff yes. Later stuff no.

4. You must have missed the post where I said that metal isn't just DM and BM. I understand it's very diverse. But calling AIC a metal band is simply streching it too far. And grunge (in my mind) applied more to the mindset of the bands than their actual music much of the time. The rebelling against what was the dominate music pattern of the time, the lyrics dealing with personal loss and problems, and the riff oriented heavily distorted guitar all ran very similar. I'm not a big Grunge fan, but from my experiances with it and the more popular bands i hear very diffinitive similarities.

DearJenny 08-04-2006 09:56 PM

I think Devin Townsend wins. Why? Because he's THAT fucking awesome and seeing him with Strapping Young Lad at ozzfest was a highlight.

Obviously not.

I break it down real simple for you

And I know there are some errors. I'm working on verison 2 currently.

Stone Magnet 08-04-2006 10:08 PM

Progressive music’s sound cannot really be pigeonholed due to the very nature of Progressive Music, however some factors remain constant. The musicianship is very high and often very complex. Most songs are very long with very few “parts” repeated. And often bands put out concept albums (albums unified by a central theme that runs throughout the record. Often songs will have a consistent riff or sound that anchors it together).
That proves that Tool is a progressive metal band.

Quote:

Thrash metal combines the speed and intensity of punk and hardcore with the precision of metal.
All post-'Power Metal' Pantera = Thrash metal. Sometimes they're labelled as "Groove Metal", which also makes sense.

Quote:

Not truly a metal sub-genre
It is a metal subgenre. Whether or not you like it, it is. Why do you think it's called "Nu-metal"? The vocals are sometimes influenced by hip-hop/rap, that's about it.

You failed to mention anything about Alternative Metal.

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 10:11 PM

As I said version 2 is on the way, it'll included, Alt, Tech, and Grind.

And Tool is progressive...ish.

and you're saying what i said about Pantera lol

it's called Nu-Metal cause some idiot attached the label. Everyone who liked ICP back in the day latched on.

tdoc210 08-04-2006 10:12 PM

Jens Kidman
haha i hate Bruce ****inson *feels alone*

High musicianship, complex music, epic songs, concept albums. According to you, they're the prototypical progressive metal band.

They were never "Southern Groove Rock".

Quote:

It's called Nu-Metal because it's a subgenre of metal. Try to see past the bigotry.

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 10:23 PM

1. All those things you mentioned are still subjective. Think it if you want. You're not wrong. But I'm not either.

2. hmmm, Thrash and Groove with a Southern flair to it...wow...should we include such a vital part of their sound in the style...

3. What race am I hating on? And Nu-Alternative is a much more appropriate title for "Nu-Metal"

None - you don't have to be jeering a race to be a bigot.
