Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath created heavy metal. Though they are totally different then today's heavy metal.

Today's hevay metal sucks, but without the old stuff we wouldn't have stuff like prog metal, death metal, doom metal, etc. Plus I love the old stuff. Black Sabbath's first 7 albums were good. I hated everything with Dio.

There are over a billion sub genres.

I like.

Thrash Metal
Stoner Metal
Doom/Sludge Metal
Prog Metal
Some Goth Metal
Some Symphonic Black Metal
A lot of the British New Wave stuff
Some Hardcore

I don't like.

Death Metal
Most Black Metal
Hair Metal, save Van Halen and Guns N Roses if they count
Most Power Metal, though I love Uriah Heep, and they have a very proto-Power Metal sound
Most other kinds of Extreme Metal
Nu Metal, haha
