Jon Theodore is pretty awesome. Ben Koller (Converge) is really good, too.

Speaking of Converge, if someone could put No Heroes up for me somewhere, that'd be cool.

TheUsedToolguy 04-07-2007 05:46 PM

Danny Carey
John Bonham
Neil Peart
Jimmy Chamberlain
The drummer for Pearl Jam

lol @ the lack of Zach Hill in this thread. Do any of you listen to good music?

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 04-07-2007 06:20 PM

nope.

Muzak 04-07-2007 06:27 PM

I dunno. I don't either :( Was just wondering.

TheUsedToolguy 04-07-2007 07:43 PM

Actually, I don't know the guy's name, but Pink Floyd's drummer was cool.

tdoc210 04-07-2007 08:02 PM

nick mason

boo boo 04-07-2007 10:14 PM

Nick Mason is a good drummer, not really a great one. He dosen't come close to being one of the best IMO.

Gotta love that drum intro in Time though.

almauro 04-09-2007 10:25 AM

Dave Lombardo - Slayer, Testament - "The Gathering". He's taken drumming to another level.

bardonodude 04-09-2007 01:04 PM

Gabe Serbian (The Locust, Cattle Decapitation), his drumming is so complex, hes very talented

Levithan 04-09-2007 01:20 PM

^Agree with you there...but it depends on what you define greatness...
Speed, complexity of drum beats and fills or just general consitiancy...
Im a huge fan of Mastodon at the moment, Blood Mountain was such a good metal album in my opion. But I wouldn't say the drummer is the greatest ive ever heard...

TheUsedToolguy 04-11-2007 09:00 PM

the drummer for Yellowcard shreds
*hides*

.MP3 04-12-2007 12:34 AM

Best drummer of all time...Neil Peart :)

Voice_of_the_Soul12,13,01 04-23-2007 01:09 PM

Gene Hoglan
Richard Christy
George Kollias
Martin Lopez
Marco Minnemann

ALL better than what Mastadon's drummer has to offer.

itchytasty 04-23-2007 05:37 PM

^ Gene Holgan is a ****ing monster behind the kit.

In regards to the original post, I find Brann to be one of the most tasteful drummers in metal.

Maybe not the best but I think he's hands down the most under rated. As much as people praise Opeth I almost never hear Martin mentioned. In my opinion his style is very distinct and instantly recognizable.

Death's "Individual Thought Patterns" and "Symbolic" are two of my favorite albums, and Gene played superbly on them. Recommend any other metal bands he's been in?

Pretty much any drummer whose played in Death is awesome in my book. So innovative and creative, not like any other death metal drumming.

Ani Kyd and Just Cause are probably my two favorite bands he's played in but the obvious answers are Dark Angel and Strapping Young Lad.

Voice_of_the_Soul12,13,01 04-23-2007 07:53 PM

I like Strapping Young Lad. I didn't know he played with them.

Just read that he's also going to be doing drums for the Dethklok album DethAlbum.

As it goes, the drumming aspect of Opeth never struck me as being particularly remarkable. I'm surprised anybody would shortlist Martin.

jackhammer 05-17-2007 04:21 PM

There are Jazz drummers out there who blow the arse off most drummers if it was purely technique, but sometimes technique alone can be clinical and cold.

Here are some of my faves and in no order:

John Bonham-his sound is generally recognised as THE definitive rock drum sound-check out DAZED AND CONFUSED for some awesome drum rolls.

BILL WARD-technique? not too much, but his application was spot on, his drumming is so integeral to SABBATH'S sound. Simplicity is sometimes a beauty to behold.

DAVE LOMBARDO-again, never over-elaborate. pure clean aggression and one of the Thrash originals.

NEIL PEART-technique par excellence. He uses EVERY aspect of his kit as well as anyone out there.

SASHA POP0VIC-who? MOTHER TONGUE debut album 1994-check out the track BABY BURN (the rest of the album is **** hot too) but this is an incredible piece of drumming.

Sorry I'm not a drummer so cant describe peoples techniques too well!

The drummer from the French band GOJIRA is ****ing excellent too!

Seltzer 05-19-2007 07:02 PM

Brann Dailor is a beast, but Danny Carey is still better.

The best drummer ever is simply Vinnie Colaiuta. After seeing him with Herbie Han**** live, he changed how I think of drummers. That guy is simply the most amazing person to ever touch drums. The feel, the fills, the skill, the improvisation... everything, it's all there.

I'm quite a fan of Martin Lopez as well. He has a very nice style and some monster fills.

bowerbank 05-22-2007 08:29 AM

i think joey jordison is way better than mastadons drummer even so he is really good but joey RULES

Probably one of the most overrated drummers ever. If he was so good then why do all the drum parts in his band blow ass?

I dunno if I posted here already but zach hill > any living drummer besides Neil.

sarxist 05-30-2007 08:26 PM

Has anyone given any love to Terry Bozzio? The guy may be an ass-hole but his playing more than makes up for it.

Nathan Explosion 05-30-2007 11:08 PM

Chris Adler is a beast. And he has a very original style IMO.

anticipation 06-02-2007 04:36 PM

keith moon was better.

jr. 06-02-2007 10:59 PM

This is better than anything that cat from Mastadon can do.

YouTube - Best drum solo by a seven year old ever?

jimbojones 06-02-2007 11:08 PM

frost from satyricon is pretty good.

At long last, somebody has mentioned Keith Moon. Tommy Aldridge is another "session" musician who has featured on so many albums it would surprise you. Take a listen to Dallas Warhead by Gary Moore to hear Aldridge pound those skins.

(take away trickery like triggers and a lot of modern drummers won't sound half as good)

DearJenny 06-05-2007 11:42 PM

Good but not THAT good. Don't get me wrong, I like Mastodon, but I have friends who could outdrum many of the current "best" drummers.

And I agree with Keith Moon being among the best ever.

jacobedmund 06-06-2007 03:43 AM

The best drummer

Hi
I like drumming by Extol drummer David Husvik. He beats Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo or anyone else you might care to mention by a walk. No-one really touches him. Joey Jordison is also a good drummer.

Lost_At_22 06-06-2007 08:02 AM

Forgot about Tommy Lee.....i'm not the biggest Crue fan by a long way but he can play damn good.

As can Travis Barker. :drummer:

GravitySlips 06-06-2007 08:07 AM

Terry Bozzio is better than most people mentioned in this thread.

Most definitely. Him and Hellhammer; two best black metal drummers.

Also, and I don't mean to sound like an *******, but Joey Jordison is pretty mediocre compared to other drummers. He's no different than every metalcore drummer out there, aside form the fact he plays in a 9-piece nu-metal homo project called Slipknot. And his double bass skill/technique/whatever you wanna call it, which is the first thing I've ever heard anyone say about him (He's so fast on teh double bass LAWLZ!!), is nothing special. I've heard Hellhammer doing practically machine gun rolls when I saw Dimmu a couple weeks ago. He's a decent drummer, but I wouldn't put him up on such a high pedestal. But that's just me.

I will say he's good for inspiring young drummers to play metal (even though he's in a nu-metal band). I know he inspired me to play drums when I was young. He's a gateway musician to bigger and better drumming.
