And the best drummer in the world right now, and arguably of all time is...

...Brann Dailor, Mastodon.

He beats Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo or anyone else you might care to mention by a walk. No-one really touches him.

DISCUSS!!!

sleepy jack 03-31-2007 04:28 PM

lol no.

Rob Jones>>>Dailor.

Plus the fact I don't even like Tool and can respect Danny Carey says alot about his drumming. Mastodon sucks.

You = Wrong!

Quickly, somebody agree with me!

Blain 03-31-2007 05:38 PM

Lol. The amount of drumers in the world, I doubt it. He could be the best commercial drummer, but I highly doubt it.

You gotta take drumming in all aspects, if I went up to this guy and asked him to play a swing at 180 clicks, he'd have no chance. Yet if we went to any random jazz drummer and asked him to do it he'd do it with ease as well with a normal rock beat. There's many types of drumming which I'm betting he couldn't do, so this arguement is entirely subjective.

Muzak 03-31-2007 05:41 PM

Thats a funny way to spell George Kollias's name.

sleepy jack 03-31-2007 05:43 PM

No, Mastodon has an awful vocalist, he can't sing. His "scream" if you can call it that is terribly generic and sounds like tons of other metal vocalists i've heard and the lyrics? "The hero of the gods the crossing of the threshold the Belly of the wale refusal of Return" I think the awfulness of that speaks for itself.

Theres nothing special about this band, I don't think their drummer is nearly as good as other drummers in this same genre. I mean this dude can't even touch Joey Jordison and according to metalheads he sucks right?

Blain 03-31-2007 05:49 PM

Joey Jordison is nowhere near the greatest drummer around at the moment anyway. So yeah.

EDIT: In metal, he's close, but not in all other genres.

sleepy jack 03-31-2007 05:49 PM

Agreed, but I think hes better than Mastodons drummer.

Blain 03-31-2007 05:51 PM

He could be, I don't listen to Mastodon.

Muzak 03-31-2007 06:59 PM

I have never seen Joey Jordison's playing, is it really that good?

Blain 03-31-2007 07:09 PM

YouTube - joey jordison

^There's the solo that everyone loves. It's not the greatest solothere is, but it's pretty damn fast.

YouTube - joey jordison

The's another cool one

Muzak 03-31-2007 07:18 PM

not bad, but he isn't the greatest IMO. The blast beats he tries to pull in the second video sounds terrible. But he can do some pretty fast double bass. Thats just my observations from the videos.

Blain 03-31-2007 07:21 PM

His double kicks are incredible, that's basically what makes all his stuff sound good. He's fast, but there is much better.

Now if only he'd learn how to write a song.

Drum solos are officially the most boring thing in music.

That's a pretty stupid thing to say seeing as he's made about 5 albums with Slipknot, and don't give me sh*t about Slipknot being bad because I've yet to see you make any songs.

Edit: 900 posts:)

Making nothing> making a Slipknot album

I don't make any claims to be a great songwriter so I don't need to make any songs.
Using your arguement you can't claim to judge any food you've eaten due to you not being a chef.

i enjoyed a slipknot song, so i got an album wa sterrible

here is some excellent videos of George ripping it up. His main skill is in his double bass though he is very good with the rest of the kit as well.

The three greatest drummers are:

Neil Peart
John Bonham
Mike Portnoy

end of discussion!

Rainard Jalen 04-01-2007 05:36 AM

lol, there's nothing particularly bad about mastodon's lyrics when taken as a whole. It's a little off in places, but what isn't? If anything, Mastodon show considerably more evidence of literacy than mostly all other mainstream metal bands.

Far as the singing goes, Hinds may not have the best voice but, like with Billy Corgan, it's the imperfections that end up contributing to the overall sound (that is, for those who like the sound). A good voice isn't really required to get the job done. It just has to work.

Ultimately though, it's the range of ideas they play with that sets them apart from most of the competition.

bloodorflies 04-01-2007 05:40 AM

the dude in mastodon is definite better than joey jordison....better than them bot put together is chris penne from dillinger escape plan.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-01-2007 06:53 AM

Is English a second language for you?

mr-bungle 04-01-2007 07:59 AM

The guy from Mastodon is the best drummer at the minute, although not of all time. Plus he's by far better than Joey Jordison.

boo boo 04-01-2007 05:08 PM

You're all wrong. Buddy Rich.

But in rock, either Peart, Bozzio or Bruford.

The Glass Prison 04-01-2007 05:09 PM

I didn't see the point of quoting the whole song but I will.

The hero of the gods
The crossing of the threshold
The Belly of the wale
Refusal of Return

Hollow eyes
Dry pale legs
Howling on
Thru fields and graves

Language of the signs
Symbols to our sight
Guardian to thy throne
take on form

Daylight
Hide the skin
Cut it of
Scatter ash in the wind

Shapeshifters rolling on winds of tyrants make
Fierce lore of fanged horn
Danger all the way
Night's sea reflection
The faces of bodies slain
Returning to the form of natrual human's fate

Grown from the cold
Spirits Unclean
Dealer of the days
The ice will thaw

As the solider walks thru the crimson side
Researchers of aftermatch
Dispelling disarming man
One-toed horses subject of genesis
And the immigrants

Fundamental side of a human mind
Hulder folk and fairies
So belive

The hero of the gods
The crossing of the threshold
The Belly of the wale
Refusal of Return

Congrats you can write fragmented lines about a cliche metal topic! They also write about Moby Dick which is equally amazing. Lordi writes better lyrics than this.

See when I read that I think you're buttering up the fact hes unoriginal and not good. I don't like Corgans voice either.

There is no "best drummer". My personal favourites would have to be Bill Ward, Bill Bruford, Utrillo Kushner, Billy Cobham, Dale Crover, Tomas Haake, Nick Mason, Jon Theodore, and Danny Carey.

I don't see how they stand out from all the other metal bands.

Regarding the lyrics: the fragmentary nature of it is precisely the idea. They are even written in order to get that exact point across, i.e. that they are fragmentary and unrelated, in the CD artwork booklet (each sentence is separated from the next by fairly large circles, as if separating the names of two different songs. That the theme is clichéd is a rather moot point, as what metal themes these days are not? The main purpose of their lyrics is simply to conjure up an image that fits the mood of the music, and they do that just fine.

About the voice, I'm not buttering anything up. I admit that he hasn't got a particularly good voice. Neither does the other vocalist. But they make it work somehow, and the result is part of the appeal for those who like the sound - hence the comparison with Corgan.

There's no point arguing in favor of standing out vs not. There are literally dozens if not hundreds of tentative variables that come into those sorts of discussions. Ultimately, it's all perception and subjectivity anyway; if something doesn't stand out to one person, nothing's going to convince them otherwise.

I like you.
He was the reason Volta was immense at one point. For me anyway, I got a thing for great drumming...

Laces Out Dan! 04-01-2007 10:24 PM

Fuck John Theodore...i got some live bootlegs from a recent TMV show with the new drummer Thomas Pridgen...he is fanominal..absolutely amazing.

adidasss 04-01-2007 10:29 PM

Riiight...

sleepy jack 04-01-2007 10:31 PM

Their new drummer is really really good, I was checking into his other stuff for Scott when he mentioned a new Volta drummer, and this was before he'd done a thing with the Volta and I knew he was going to be good. Thomas Pridgen was a good choice, hes phenomenal.

Laces Out Dan! 04-01-2007 10:32 PM

"Thomas Pridgen is the current drummer for The Mars Volta from El Cerrito, California. He won the Guitar Center Drum-Off at age 9 and at age 10 was the youngest recipient for a Zildjian endorsement in the history of the company. Thomas has studied with Dave Garibaldi, Walfredo Reyes Jr, Troy Luketta, and Curtis Nutall. He is endorsed by DW Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Remo Drumheads, LP Percussion, Rhythm Tech, and Zendrum. Thomas was also the recipient of a 4 year scholarship to Berklee College of Music at the age of 15; he was youngest musician to ever receive this scholarship. He has played in clinics with Walfredo Reyes, Jr. and Dennis Chambers. Besides his work with The Mars Volta, he has also been involved with Wicked Wisdom and Christian Scott." - Wikipedia

I really like Hellhammer and Tony Loreaneau(sp?). But I guess im just talking about speed. I think Chris Adler has a really original style.

Laces Out Dan! 04-06-2007 05:05 PM

I love Chris Adler as well. Awesome kicks.
