Devin Townsend

http://www.mtv.com/shared/media/news...in_grimace.jpgDevin Townsend (The Devin Townsend Band) is a side project of Strapping Young Lads lead vocalist and guitarist Devin Townsend. Its been called the happy side of SYL. Its really progressive and unique and its just awesome. Has a new album coming out May 22nd as well. Im soo stoked. I think that Terria is his best album by far and everyone needs to have it. I'll upload it here soon.

Billabong01 06-12-2008 07:40 PM

Devin Townsend Anyone?

I'm a really big fan of this mad man, just wondering if anyone else knows about him and enjoys his work.

rundonnierun 06-13-2008 02:07 PM

I'm a big fan of his stuff with SYL and I also loved the Ocean Machine record. That stuff was amazing. I have Infinity which is awesome. Physicist was cool but it sounds like a mellower SYL. The Ziltoid record is a trip. The guy is a musical genius.

Billabong01 06-13-2008 08:47 PM

ziltoid is probably my favorite album from him besides city and the new black

Seltzer 06-16-2008 04:13 AM

Threads merged.

And I quite like Devin Townsend... it's nice to hear some prog metal with an original sound. In fact, I'm listening to Terria atm.

Sljslj 07-17-2010 08:17 PM

Devin Townsend

Townsend's one of my favorite artists. He's just so inventive and like nothing else out there.
I'm excited and getting insanely anxious for the new DT Project albums next May.
Anyone else a fan?

scottsy 07-17-2010 08:24 PM

MASSIVE fan... there isn't a single dud album the man has made! When Ki and Addicted came out, I lived, drank, ate, slept and breathed those albums for months, and they're still on the very top of my music listening tree this very day...

Not to mention that is how I've felt about every single album the guy has made... months of obsessive listening and I don't think I've ever been able to be bored with any single track...

That being said, I am literally dying of anticipation for next may... the last two DTP albums are THE two most exciting new releases on my musical radar for next year and, aside from Radiohead and anything new by The Church the biggest two albums on my radar, period.

Same, I bought Ki and Addicted about a month after they were released and are still enjoying the both of them as exactly as much as when I got them.

I wish I'd discovered him earlier than I did, but since I found him in 2004 I've heard (and often obsessed over) every track he's released.

Also, He's supposed to be releasing Ziltoid 2 around the same time as Deconstruction and Ghost (DTP albums #3 and 4). He must be a very busy man right now.

scottsy 07-17-2010 09:13 PM

Oh yeah! I heard the Ziltoid2 story too.... yet another amazing album to look forward to! The dude must be quite busy finishing stuff, that's for sure.

Unrelenting 07-23-2010 09:05 AM

Ziltoid.

LoathsomePete 07-23-2010 09:19 AM

Terria (2001) has been and probably will always be my favourite Devin Townsend album. Something about it just resonated really well with me back in 2003. It's incredibly organic, features Devin's best writing, and has a certain spiritual feeling to it, which is cool with Devin.

As far as Strapping Young Lad is concerned I will always enjoy City (1997) the most. That album seriously got me through high school and was my first real experience with '90's metal beyond Pantera. Heavy, chaotic, brilliantly mastered, and with a heavy dose of nostalgia put on top, it will take an act of God to make me change my mind.

Sljslj 07-31-2010 02:20 PM

What's your favorite DT track? here's mine:

Unrelenting 07-31-2010 09:42 PM

I am so omniscient. If there were two omniscients, i would be both.

LoathsomePete 08-05-2010 12:34 PM

"Tiny Tears" off Terria (2001) is easily my favourite Devin Townsend solo track. For some reason it reminds me of some of the music from Majora's Mask...

jtwilliams 08-05-2010 10:07 PM

Im not really a big metal fan. I do like Pantera. This guy's solo stuff is catching my attention. I looked up SYL not that big on it though.

scottsy 08-05-2010 10:09 PM

Listen to as much of the Townsend solo stuff as you can... there seriously is not a dud track on any of the man's solo work, garanteed... seriously ranks up there with my top tier of favorite musicians...

Thats always a good thing to hear. I think Ill download something shortly.

The Abominable Homan 08-05-2010 10:23 PM

Definitely City for me, it's one of my top albums by anyone. Townsend's solo work is pretty good, but I've never found it quite as consistently great as most SYL.

scottsy 08-08-2010 08:12 AM

I think his solo work is where it's at, basically... I think he truly pours all of his best into the solo stuff, but he loves his work with SYL too... maybe i should use a past tense for that because SYL have disbanded... nevertheless I think he always used SYL as an avenue to pur out his deepest darkest rage whereas the solo stuff he focused more on his complex thoughts and feelings... certainly seems that way when you listen to an album like Terria... gotta play that album again some time soon...

MuffinGod 08-14-2010 05:55 PM

Devin Townsend is the shizz, though Addicted is quite boring and hardly his best stuff. Terria, Ocean Machine, Infinity, Synchestra and Ki rate quite high in my book. Terria is my fav and The Death of Music is his best composition ever.

scottsy 08-14-2010 08:02 PM

No way! Addicted is far from boring IMO... I find it refreshing and the singlemost fun album he's made... it's not the most complex or deep musically and lyrically, but man the guy can rock out in a fun way and it's GOOD to hear that considering the dark places the man sounds like he has been in life... it's totally my favorite CD for driving to work, especially before long hard gruelling days...

But I am secretly holding out desperately to her Deconstructed... should be epic!

Agreed, Addicted! was a fun pump-up album. It was exactly what I wanted to hear, such a sharp contrast to Ki. I'm expecting Deconstructed to be a mixture of Physicist and The New Black, specifically the song "Almost Again".

The_Mop 08-17-2010 06:17 PM

Devin Townsend is a ****ing hero. Really need to listen to his stuff in more depth, I've heard most of SYL and Accelerated Evolution (one of my all time fave albums), Ki, Addicted, Ziltoid. Need to listen to more of the solo stuff.

Saw him (and met him, briefly!) at bloodstock a few days ago. One of the best live performances I've seen in a long time.

scottsy 08-17-2010 10:32 PM

Do yourself a very huge favor and check out his earlier solo stuff, you won't regret it at all if you the Devin Townsend Project material!

I'm pretty sure it's Deconstruction, and the other one coming out in May is Ghost.

The world needs these albums. I honestly think that Devy has the potential to change the planet with his beautiful music. I can't stress enough how excited I am for the final DTP albums, as well as Z2.

Sljslj 12-06-2010 09:43 PM

All my fellow Devin Townsend fans will appreciate this, for sure.

I've never been more excited for an album in my life. The word epic is overused these days, but these will truly be epic.

Laces Out Dan! 12-07-2010 05:42 PM

I just love watchin Devin work hah.

Sljslj 02-14-2011 10:55 AM

Artwork for Ghost:

Devin says that he will be delivering the master-tracks to the record company on March 1, so it's quite possible both Ghost and Deconstruction could be released before May, which was the date given to us before.

I'm so excited for this!

Sljslj 05-27-2011 09:42 PM

I found a leak of his album, Deconstruction, which is set for release in late June, if anyone's interested. It is beyond incredible. My favorite track atm is "Stand", but I'ma have to give it a few more listens (the entire album I mean) before I can be sure.

Here's the link: Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction It's streaming, not a download, so those of you scared of downloads can rest easy. I hope you have as much fun with it as I am.

Chrysalis 05-28-2011 08:51 AM

I'm really excited for Deconstruction and Ghost's release, and I would probably buy them right when they come out.

Too bad I'll be in California when they do. :<
