Wow I didn't expect the first thread I looked at in this forum to feature my favorite band Porcupine Tree! They are indeed awesome. They take rock and do something original and creative with it, instead of recycling the same old riffs and cliches. At the same time they avoid the pretentiousness of prog and art rock. Although sometimes I enjoy some slightly pretentious prog, like Pain of Salvation. Actually PoS is a very close contender for best band ever, IMO.

lol there are lots of better bands. They're good though.

Pantera wins in my opinion....or Metallica.

I still never understood what The Rolling Stones had on The Beatles, The Who and Pink Floyd other than maybe commercial appeal.

The thing is, everyone trys to label them as outsiders, as rebels and hipsters. Maybe when it come to their image, but their music was just Rock N Roll and nothing beyond that, and all and all as everyone from AC/DC to GnR know, Rock N Roll is what sells.

Overall IMO, The Stones are incredibly overrated, argubly the most overrated band of all time, and of all the big bands that came from the London scene and the British invasion, they were the least original. People give them credit for creating hard rock, but their music wasn't really that different from traditional Chicago blues and R&B. The Who, The Yardbirds, Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin and Sabbath did a far better job at channeling those influences into a unique sound.

The Stones did popularise the idea of blues rock, but they were not that innovative, their legacy is mostly about image.

This a favorite band thing. While I agree their music is one-sided it is still very enjoyable to listen to.

In Flames are honestly the worst band on that list, which says a lot considering it all sucks.

Not to say that Porcupine Tree suck, but I am saying there are many MANY better bands.

Not many in the past 15 years.

Definitely not many mainstream bands.
But if you start listening to bands who aren't well known, you'll find alot more great bands.
