Best band of all time poll

I figured I'd make one with seriously good bands since you n00bs have no clue how to do it.

jackhammer 06-03-2007 12:16 PM

Ha ha like this one-I'm a big Porcupine Tree fan, but I still prefer PINK FLOYD

boo boo 06-03-2007 12:17 PM

I f*cking love love LOVE Porcupine Tree... But saying they are the best band of all time is just madness.

But then again, this is the same guy who thinks RATM are the worst band of all time.

Is that all you talk about? Maybe you're obsessed with my obsession of RATM.

boo boo 06-03-2007 02:21 PM

Oh whatever... The options are still better than the majority of Crowquills polls. :p:

Seltzer 06-03-2007 03:03 PM

I love Porcupine Tree, but they're not my favourite band... maybe 5th favourite.

The Dave 06-03-2007 04:27 PM

Porcupine is good, but are in no way the best band ever.

boo boo 06-03-2007 08:14 PM

Yeah, but as far as modern rock music goes, they're churning out better stuff than 90% of most bands.

Definately true. Though I do have sort of a problem with them. They sometimes go too far trying to sound like Floyd, which annoys me.

boo boo 06-03-2007 08:29 PM

They have a very similar vibe, but I don't think they really sound like them all that much.

GravitySlips 06-04-2007 05:39 AM

This thread sucks, because Porcupine Tree are awful.

Theres something thats going wrong here. I thought I'd heard this band on a modern/classic rock radio station in Rhode Island about 5 years ago or so, and it was standard post-grunge shlock. Gathering from the amazing amount of support they get from certain members I'm inclined to ask...

Could they be misconstrued as that? Did they evolve? Is there any one song that would get played on a station that loved their Godsmack or am I just a shmuck thinking of another band. I'll go research, but I'd still like to know.

Edit: Ok I can see how I might have remembered "Blackest Eyes" as something that was more akin to Ultraspank or Fictionplane or one of those craptastical pieces of ****, but I checked out a few other songs and its clear their not akin to anything like those bands (though I still think Ultraspank's "where" is amazing). Would anyone care to suggest their favorite song. Make it one of those deep inaccessible songs, I can check the Top 5 on iTunes if I need to get something more open.

I'm not sure this was meant to be serious Gravity. Your statement must have been made in ignorance to Unfan's general posture here on the boards. I might give you some of your own advice and say "get with it."

Bane of your existence 06-04-2007 08:32 AM

I thought this thread would be about Husker Du :(

oby 06-04-2007 09:10 AM

They're not bad by ANY means, but nowhere near the best of all time. Not even the best of recent years.

I've only heard one of their songs, and it bored the crap out of me.

Porcupine Tree mix the best elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and even pop at times (just listen to Piano Lessons). They manage to craft these very deep albums that move along very smoothly yet vary stylistically from song to song.

I'd highly recommend that everyone gets a copy of Sky Moves Sideways and maybe Signify.

It wasn't Porcupine Tree then. In Absentia is my favorite from them, Blackest Eyes is on it, but I like all of the other songs better. Its a bit more accessible than their early stuff and its not quite as prog rock as their later stuff. They have a vibe similar to Pink Floyd and later King Crimson... A little Yes and Genesis influence too. But overall they're pretty original and they're quite different from most of the other prog bands nowadays like Spocks Beard and The Flower Kings.

You will still hate them though.

Or he might be one of those people that don't have the attention span to listen to great pieces like Arriving Somewhere. That song has Mikael Akerfeldt in it and he is amazing.

MM is a favorite among those who can't get into bands who use more than the exact same format for every song.

They're more repetitive than The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and The Ramones combined.

Inuzuka Skysword 06-04-2007 06:07 PM

The most repeditive music is Gangsta rap music by far.

sleepy jack 06-04-2007 06:08 PM

Modest Mouse, a band boo boo's heard two songs by but feels the need to bash in every other post.

I guess the difference between us is that I've actually listened to an album by this band, and you clearly have no idea what you were talking about when it came to emo. Not really ignorance on my part, just an INFORMED opinion.

The album was called In Absentia, I think. It bored me.

Attention span is not the problem. I listen to songs that last longer than anything I've heard by this band - Sleep's album Dopesmoker, for example, has an hour long song on it which I love listening from start to finish.

Maybe they have better albums than the one I heard, and I'm missing out on something special. Something tells me, nah.

boo boo 06-04-2007 06:34 PM

In terms of themes... But guys like BIG and Dre can mix it up when it comes to the beats.

Were you listening to Sleep sober?

I've heard M&A and Good News.

Depeche mode

DearJenny 06-05-2007 11:39 PM

I would place Blind Guardian at the top of my list for newer music(within last decade or two) and The Who or the Beatles at the top of all-time music.

Voice_of_the_Soul12,13,01 06-06-2007 08:44 AM

I've never heard of Porcupine Tree.

And best band of all time is Death.

Cecilia_M 06-06-2007 11:55 AM

Just because I am new to this site doesnt mean that im new to forums. I show myself as a music fan. Just because I have barely any posts doesnt mean im a n00b and I cant figure anything out.

But besides that, Porcupine Tree is awesome =)
