I guess it has to do with you guys being older fans of the band.

They're Red Hot and I Could have Lied should have been cut but I love just about everything else. There's no shortage of funk, I don't know where that criticism is coming from.

I agree with boobs for once. It isn't that there is a shortage of funky bass lines and anthemic chants, its that the disc is so full with other stuff that it seems like there isn't much. If you took BSSM and took out all of the "newer" sounding material you'd find a lot of their old style in there. On the other hand you could take out all of the more "classic" sounding RHCP and still have plenty of album left. Its all there. The problem is when I'm in the mood for one I'm not so much in the mood for the other so at any given moment in time half the album is skippable.

I don't know if it has a shortage of funk or not but it definitely has a dearth of the punky energy that was the reason I loved the Chili Peppers.

Theres only like 3 or 4 ballads on there, and then there's some really poppy rock songs like Suck My Kiss, Give It Away and Naked in The Rain, everything else is their usual funk.

I think it has their best funk stuff along with Mothers Milk, both because of Froosh and the production. And I still like the singles.

Though I wouldn't mind if I never heard Breaking The Girl again.

I think it's interesting that you describe "Give It Away" as poppy rock because it sounds absolutely nothing like the poppy rock that was on the radio in 1991 and is IMHO one of the weirder sounding songs on the album. I mean can you think of any other early 90s pop rock songs with a Jew's harp in it?

i don't think anyone is really saying that it lacks funk. what we're saying is it lacks the punk. it lacks the intensity and the edge of their older discs. they sound like seasoned veterans taking care of business instead of hungry rookies trying to get a piece of the pie.

there's no doubt frusciante's influence did change their sound. the difference between his and hillel slovak's styles are subtle but in this case quite significant. i am NOT dissing frusciante here either (hell i even dressed up as him for haloween 10 years ago). as it was said earlier though it seems to be a distinction between those that were already listening to the band when BSSM rolled around and those who were just discovering them.

i think we can all agree BSSM isn't a horrible disc and it most definitely marks the transformational point where the band ceases to be what they were and provides glimpses of what they would become.

Yep. That pretty much sums it up.

It's very much like BSSM in the sense that it's pretty bad overall and only has a couple good songs on it. On a personal level it's also like BSSM for me because I went into it with high expectations of a really good album and was sorely disappointed. Silly me, for god knows what reason, at the time I thought Dave fucking Navarro might actually help get them back on track musically. :laughing:

:laughing: yeah hehe, navarro seemed like such a natural fit. then again every supergroup that has ever been seemed like a natural fit and they ALL sucked haha.

i remember liking it at the time but it felt more like a 'solo' disc in a sense. like some detached project. like the 'talk show' album by the stone temple pilots with a different singer. it never really felt like a chili peppers disc to me. especially near the end when keidis starts screaming and almost sounding like cobain. that was just, odd.

I love how Frusciante claims to have never heard the album in his life.
