This appreciation for his 6 solo albums that he did in 2004. I love all of them. Inside of Emptiness is my favorite. He truly is a wonderful guitarist and musician.

Reznorslave 07-20-2006 06:41 PM

One Of The Most Underrated Guitar Players Ever!!! John Can Rip!!!

Merkaba 07-20-2006 08:27 PM

I've been rating this guy for years, brilliant musician.

boo boo 07-21-2006 10:17 AM

Agree with Reznorslave, very underrated guitarist.

Seltzer 07-21-2006 11:45 PM

He's my favourite guitarist ever. :)

cardboard adolescent 03-19-2007 08:24 PM

I just got Automatic Writing which is technically by Ataxia but is basically another one of his solo projects, and it's pretty sweet. Offsets the **** RHCP has been putting out lately.

Wild7Dustr 03-20-2007 03:05 PM

Yes, he's one of the true greats of our time.

boo boo 03-21-2007 03:20 AM

Well its just a matter of time now before Urban makes some kind of negative comment, something like.

"Argh, rubbish, argh matey, britpop, BOLLOCKS, f*cking bollocks, shiver me timbers, I'm here to pillage, give me yer gold matey, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, ARGH!!!"

So anyway, since RHCP are taking a big break off touring and stuff, I think he should start investing in some new projects. I don't know what, but something cool.

sleepy jack 03-21-2007 03:23 AM

my smileeeeeeeeee is a rifleeeeeeeeeeeee

either/or 03-21-2007 04:00 AM

sometimes his backup singing grates me

boo boo 03-21-2007 04:44 AM

Really? His backup vocals is one of my favorite things about RHCP.

Seltzer 03-21-2007 05:23 AM

Agreed - his lead vocals are decent as well. Here is Frusciante covering How Deep Is Your Love. He pulls off those vocals pretty well in the second half.

kheffelf 04-26-2007 02:58 PM

I absolutely love John, my favorite of his albums are Curtains and Smile From the Streets You Hold-absolutely hated this the first time I heard, but now I can't get enough of it.

jackhammer 08-22-2007 02:55 PM

I only have THE WILL TO DEATH and some of the guitar work is stunning, however I find some of his vocal work weak at times. I would'nt mind getting some more of his solo work. A very underated guitarist.

I find Frusciante fits the role of backup vocalist much more than lead. However, he can sing when it comes down to it - check out that youtube video I posted above.

You might want to check out To Record Only Water for Ten Days. My favourite album by him is Niandra Lades & Usually Just a T-Shirt - it's from his drugged-up period. I advise you to check it out sometime, but be warned that it is fairly inaccessible. However, if you scratch beneath the surface, it's quite a good album.

Also, Ataxia is a minimalist group consisting of Frusciante, Joe Lally and Josh Klinghoffer.

jackhammer 08-23-2007 01:36 PM

^^^
Thank's for the heads up. I will give these a go.

Brock Landers 08-23-2007 10:57 PM

A wonder man and amazing musician... I am so thankful we didn't lose him during his darks days in the middle 90s.

He has kept RHCP alive.

BluesyRican 08-27-2007 06:30 PM

So true Brock Landers, he pulled through the drug years and came out a great artist.

cardboard adolescent 08-27-2007 07:14 PM

Ataxia is amazing... the more I listen to them the more I love them.

thedividedsky1 08-27-2007 07:32 PM

John Frusciante is a genius and my favorite guitar player. I love his rhythmic and soulful style that resembles Jimi Hendrix and his experimentation with effects. I only own one of his albums, Shadows Collide with People. I've listened to his earlier albums from the 90's a little bit and they are completely insane. Just look at the song titles. "Your pussy's glued to a building on fire." I'm not saying that heroin made his music necessarily worse, but anyone who has seen the short documentary Johnny Depp made about him would agree that it was a very sad time in his life.

---------------------------------

I love John Frusciante's creative playing probably more than another other guitar player in history. I believe he's on par with Hendrix. (a modern day Hendrix) Not only does he have tons of great solo albums but all of his RHCP music from Mothers Milk on is fantastic. Please tell me your opinion on him as well...!?

Son of JayJamJah 09-27-2007 10:32 PM

I don't agree with the Hendrix thing at all, but he is one of the best of the generation indisputably and certainly ranks high on my list, although their music is so mellow it often bores me, they need horns!!!

If your saying his solo stuff is boring, i could see how you could think that, its not for everyone. But if your saying his work with RHCP is boring then i dont get you at all. His guitar playing is ALL over the place, and changes each album. He has TONs of effects and most of the songs (at least before stadium arcadium) are very wild. ex: around the world, purple stain, otherside...etc

edit:i made the hendrix comparison because he is mainly influenced by him, and has taken many methods of playing that hendrix started and expanded greatly on them

Son of JayJamJah 09-27-2007 10:45 PM

I don't think his playing is boring, just the whole mood of the music since like 2000 or so. Californication was a good album but I got tired of it quickly and haven't listened to it in like 5 years. I am not a fan of his solo stuff, but not an unfan either, I just haven't gotten heavily into it, I have been in like a two year Soul\Blues\Jazz Folk rock phase so guitar music is not at the top of my list. I would not diss the Chili Peppers I think they are among the top 50-60 bands ever, and John is a big part of why, but comparing him to Hendrix is probably a stretch. Start with Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton etc.

Wayfarer 09-27-2007 10:49 PM

Frusciante's a better guitarist than all three of them IMO. And yeah, I can understand the Hendrix comparison. John does get a bit Hendrix-esque at times. Really...explosive.

He's one of my favourites anyway. Love his work with RHCP, love his solo albums (especially Niandra and To Record Only Water).

sleepy jack 09-27-2007 10:50 PM

John Frusciante is amazing, I don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers but I love his solo albums. To Record Only Water For Ten Days is my favorite.

I certainly think you could argue he is better then those three, but not Hendrix that was my point. I still think the consensus now would rank him a ways behind but I bet they are all regarded as on a par say 15-20 years from now when his fans are my age.

Dr_Rez 09-27-2007 10:56 PM

Yea, i got your point. Its hard to really even debate this, mainly because of the time gap between the to, and the changing styles of playing and modern music.

Yeah, what I meant was that you can hear a heavy Hendrix influence in his playing at times. But on a "greatest guitarists" list, I'd never put John ahead of Hendrix. Not sure if I'd put anyone ahead of Hendrix.

Son of JayJamJah 09-27-2007 11:00 PM

He for sure channels and imitates Hendrix at times; and better then most including myself and my 30+ years of trying to can.

I'd put him right now with the final chapters of his prime still unwritten somewhere between 10-25 on my list of favorite Great Guitarists

Just curios, but do you list your favorites anywhere? wana know since youv been playin for so long :)

Son of JayJamJah 09-27-2007 11:15 PM

Too hard to list favorites

It varies so much
But of the top of my head...

No offense to Robert Johnson, who has the coolest story in Rock and Roll history and his place is secure as an all0time great but I can't relate much to his guitar style it's so archaic now 70 years later. Anway my all-time favs

1. Hendrix
2. B.B King
3. Jimmy Page (Although I'd rank him 5-10 at best in terms of greatness)
4. Eric Clapton
5. Stevie Ray Vaughn
6. This kid I met named Dave Parrot (An insane virtuoso) can make an acoustic guitar and harmonica sound like a six piece band. He's way to insane to make an album though, just gets loaded and jams out at bars I guess. Also he can play Hendrix stuff twice as fast and as clean or dirty as you ask him to, I've never seen anything like it.
7. Dwayne Allman
8. Tom Morrelo
9. Brian May (not that he's great, just never played a song I didn't enjoy hearing and\or playing)
10. 6002 way tie.

Dr_Rez 09-28-2007 12:43 PM

Does anyone know if his first recording were ever found? (they were lost in his first apartment)

riseagainstrocks 09-28-2007 04:15 PM

Everything I've heard from him has had promise, but it wasn't anything I could really get into.

Guthrie Govan is better imo
YouTube - Guthrie Govan - Fives

sleepy jack 09-28-2007 06:18 PM

That was lame, shredders are overrated.

riseagainstrocks 09-28-2007 06:58 PM

haha, he's far from a shredder. Playing fast and tapping =/= shredding.

He has some of the most tasteful leads ever, plus his technique is flawless. I can upload his album Erotic Cakes. It's badass.

Wayfarer 09-28-2007 07:23 PM

Yeah, see, here's the thing...what does Guthrie Govan have to do with John Frusciante?

"Hey, do you like Queens Of The Stone Age?
"Nah, I can't get into them. Aesop Rock is better."
"..."

boo boo 09-29-2007 02:00 AM

Yeah, people who do that annoy the hell out of me.

He's better.

Guitar player compared to guitar player =/= ****ty radio rock band compared to hip-hop group.

But has nothing to do with John Frusciante. So go start a Guthrie Govan thread if you want to blabber on about him. His music isn't really relevant here.
