Default RHCP Question

After their original guitarist died, did he just Dr. Who regenerate into John Frusciante?

I can't find anywhere that says they ever really changed guitarists.

Oh, and what is a song that has a really interesting riff or something by John.

And on a side note, the guitar in Dani California is amazing... there is some strange welcome complexity in its simple classic style.

Just google in and find their history. Hillel Slovak died way back in 1988 from drug abuse. Read SCAR TISSUE by Anthony Kiedis for a bit of history on the band.

Well, I think RHCP could be classed as an alternative rock band.

Hillel Slovak was a huge influence on John Frusciante, along with Hendrix. I often feel that Frusciante channels Hendrix better than almost anyone.

Frusciante took over on guitar duties for Mother's Milk and did a great job. Just listen to the nice fruity-sounding riff at 2:10 in Magic Johnson... awesome.

Yep, forget about several multi-platinum albums, just a couple of top ten singles. They're pretty damn mainstream.

To me, alternative has more to do with how they sound rather than how popular they are.

By your logic, an alternative rock band releases one album which is underground for a period, then suddenly changes genre once that album becomes popular.

No, not at all, but BSSM, Californication, BTW etc. are all mainstream with a mainstream sound to them(BSSM less so). Their early work is Alt Rock, but their defining albums are all mainstream.

You're wrong, their later music expands on alternative rock influences. It very much is possible to be both alternative and mainstream at the same time. Just look at The White Stripes and Radiohead.

Pre-BSSM is funk rock. BSSM is funk rock, but it's more well rounded with alternative influences.

One Hot Minute is most definitely alternative, especially with Dave Navarro's guitarwork. Californication is up for debate. By the Way is more poppy, but it still has some alternative sounding songs... look past the singles. Stadium Arcadium mixes everything.

I have them classified as funk rock in my collection, because the majority of their albums are funk rock (S/T, Freaky Styley, Uplift Mofo, Abbey Road EP, Mother's Milk, BSSM), and even if the later ones aren't funk rock, they retain a huge funk element. However, I have no doubt that they could be legitimately classified as alternative.

Alternative Rock? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Alternative can mean anything from grunge to funk-rock. What's mainstream can be anything from Led Zeppelin to Mariah Carey. RHCP is a mainstream band, and have been since BSSM was released. Mainstream doesn't have a definable sound.
