Alternative Rock is such an arsehole term to work with I've decided, it's as ambiguous as the night is black. To me alternative rock is just an all encompasing title of artists they aren't blatantly definable.

Nickelback, Tool, RHCP, RATM, Oasis, The Killers, Radiohead, Nirvana...

Pop rock is also alt-rock, rap rock is also alt rock, hard rock is also alt rock, grungey music is also alt rock. Even Britpop isn't safe, if Oasis is even remotely rocky (which they are) then they have, at some point in time, been called alt rock.

I find this is generally fueled by music stores who don't want to set up 5000 different genre stands so they'll just lump anything and everything together under some sort of title.

It just grinds you down.
