Bands that are positively shaping metal right now:

Unexpect
The Great Deceiver
Opeth
In Vain
Mastodon
Burst
Meshuggah
Ephel Duath
Genghis Tron
GOJIRA
Isis

There are honestly so many great innovative bands out right now, quit being ignorant and listen to them! :P

Goatsnake
Cathedral

A few picks from my neck of the woods, High On Fire are a must check out if you were to ask me.

I guess part of it is my age and part of it is my preference for blues-based music (which doesn't seem to be "in" right now), but I just yawn every time I hear new "heavy" music.

The # 1 metal album on Amazon.com right now is from a bunch of cartoon characters called "Dethklok". (sigh)
I don't think the music of post-Vulgar-Display Dimebag or any of his associated acts was particularly riveting either.

There's still quite a bit of decent heavy music out there. All ya have to do is look hard. European underground metal has plenty to offer.

I've got Azureus working overtime on some of these bands you guys have mentioned. Hopefully, I will find a new "torch-bearer" for the genre (Personally, I'm rooting for Bathtub ****ter - I bet they are the next Judas Priest ).

P.S. What's with all the Hatebreed negativity? I can't think of one reason why they WOULDN'T be considered "good"... Please enlighten me.

... That, and Ozzy doing a Pepsi commercial with Donnie and Marie Osmond.
HE WAS NOT MARTYRED!

Wrong place, wrong time.

Go listen to Hellyeah. Dimebag was a great guitarist, but there are hundreds of bands that are a million times better than Pantera/Damageplan and have been putting out quality records ever since.

Hellyeah is alright. I think Mudvayne is a pretty good band. I'm not saying that there no more good bands out there... I guess one would have to actually have been alive and aware during the golden age of metal (1980-1991) to know what I am looking for.

Why would metal die? There will always be demand for a heavier more cathartic music even if its not the "in" music.

Apparently this is the future of heavy metal.
Perhaps the future of popular metal but not the real undergrond scene. If it did than instead of Black Metal and Death Metal, we all be stacking Limp Biskit CDs next to our Kiss records.

The "true" metal scene will never die because of its rabid fanbase and what metal represents.

Listen to UNEXPECT. Quit your bitching.

considering they took their sound from Arcturus, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and Ulver, I don't find them to be very original at all.
