Why wouldn't they be?

Since when were metal bands considered not metal bands just for having a commercial sound and generally being crap?

I don't rule them out of metal for having a commercial sound.....I feel like they rely alot on bass sounds for most of their songs.....I don't know what to classify them as but I just don't see them as metal...they'd probably fit better into Hard Rock or Alternative. Sometimes they throw in some industrial sound effects.

Metallica actually annoys me quite a bit. I don't see how they could be the birth of such great music...

I, for one (no pun intended), think "Harvester of Sorrow" was just about the best metal song of the 80's. There seem to be two classes of metal fans: "Master of Puppets" people (which is a lot of them) and "...and Justice For All" people (which always seem to be the people who actually know what they are talking about - ).

Of course, this is excluding that third class - to whom you ask: "What's your favorite Metallica album?" and they answer "The Black Album". Those are the Kid Rock / Linkin Park types that need not even enter this discussion.

I think people chose "Master" over "Justice" because of Cliff Burton, but I think Cliff's death caused Metallica to make their best album... You can hear the anger and the anguish in the sound... It's absolutely where they peaked, and not before.

Korn has never played metal. Being heavy and dissonant does not equal metal.

They don't sound that different to all the funk metal bands in the early 90s , they were considered metal.

Funk metal is not a real genre... and the term sounds like RATM, Primus, and Faith No More being incorrectly labeled.
