Anyone recommend something like this?

I've been searching for new music to listen to for a while, and I was wondering if anyone has any input. I'm looking for a "mid-range" heavy act similar to Tool or Porcupine Tree. Oh, and I also like prog.

But please, nothing mainstream. Its not that I'm snoody, I just already have my mainstream tastes figured out.

Sieges Even Official v7.0

right up your street.

Many people compare Riverside to Porcupine Tree but I don't think they're that similar. Either way, both bands kick arse. Get Second Life Syndrome.

As for Tool, King Crimson is the obvious link there. You've probably heard them though. If you haven't, In the Court of the Crimson King is the best album to start with, however, I think Red is the best and the most Tool-like.

Hey, thanks for the input guys! Good stuff. Riverside pretty much hit the spot :)

Try FATES WARNING and the album X.

Maybe try Oceansize..I know a lot of people who like them. Not particularly my thing..but they're not bad.

Have you tried Opeth? They're produced by Steven Wilson, and although they do incorporate a bit of screaming that can be irritating if you're not into that sort of that, the instrumentation and songwriting is excellent, and definitely heavy.

Try Isis

Isis and Opeth. or try some Trivium. Maybe a little too hardcore but i think you'd get into em.

Also very good stuff. Thanks a lot guys

Lol, I used to like trivium before they went all "metallica" sounding... :(

Clownbaby 01-19-2008 09:54 AM

Try The End's new album "Elementary"...sounds like just a more metal version of Tool, no real screamed vocals or anything he just yells a lot

under 01-19-2008 07:43 PM

trivium has become to sound like metallica.
i was listening to em one day a while back and i ask him to guess who this is and he said metallica and its like...wow.
they have good sound, but they're just not original.

Frewen 01-21-2008 01:33 AM

I'd second Oceansize and personally recommend their second album Everyone into Position.

O I know they've changed into pure Metallica copycats and are reaping in the dough because of that...I prefer there metalcore sound better when Heafy used to scream.

Neurosis and Jesu maybe? To a poppier extent I get a bit of a Porcupine Tree vibe from Spock's Beard.

You don't listen listen to the former and the latter is nothing like the what the OP is asking for. Stop posting. Seriously. All you do is regurgitate what those around you are talking about even if it doesn't make sense in the context of the thread. You don't develop your own opinions and your time on this board is spent seeking approval from some the social hierarchy this place has managed to develop.

As for my recommendations, Spock's Beard (especially the albums V and Feel Euphoria), Frameshift (check out Unweaving The Rainbow), and Aghora (technical/jazzy metal but with female sung vocals, the self-titled is the superior of the two albums imo)

If you like Tool maybe you'll like A Perfect Circle - actually I'm quite curious as to why no one reccomended it before.

Merkaba 01-23-2008 02:02 PM

Oceansize, I haven't heard the album Frewen mentioned but their first, Effloresce, is brilliant.

Comus 01-23-2008 02:09 PM

I have to agree with Isis, doesn't sound much like what Tool or PT produce but it's just worth it because it's awesome beyond all words.

And an awful lot better than Tool.

Comus 01-23-2008 02:48 PM

That goes without saying. I make sounds in my sleep better than tool.

Do you ever record them? You might be able to get a cult following and sell 1 million records in two weeks.

I like both equally. The self titled has a more jazzy (as you mentioned) and yet slightly harder to get into sound while I find I can throw in Formless and listen to it just about any time.

As for recommendations, Earshot sound sort of like a cross between Tool and something with more radio friendly structures. Sort of like a watered down Tool. I'd also say Miocene has a bit of a Tool sound although often a bit nu-metal in spots. Either way, they should have a little bit of appeal if you're into that sort of thing.
