Even if they were (i`ve never seen them say it myself) Radiohead have so many influences I doubt that they would have made much difference to their sound even if they were or not.I have got Radiohead doing a Carly Simon song , would it be fair to say we wouldn`t have OK Computer or Kid A without her too?
I agree with that right there. Just because a band says they are influenced by another band doesn't mean that they are alike to them. I would count one of my biggest musical influences as Outkast, but when I write songs they sound nothing like Outkast songs. You can be inspired by something without immitating it.

So you say they cant be influenced by Nirvana because they dont sound like them and then you say that?

This is getting rather confusing.

NOOOOOO.... I'm saying that just because Radiohead say they are inspired by Nirvana doesn't mean that they have to sound like them.

My bad, sometimes i always expect what people say to be something negative even when it's not, i'm a little too used to hearing nothing but negative things and very few positive things.

But of course Radiohead arent going to sound like Nirvana, thats what i have been trying to tell expletive.

Radiohead do have several influences (including one band that you so despise)... Everything from Can to The Smiths to The Beatles to Talking Heads to Miles Davis, and more some.

But how i look at it, every influence counts in some way, big or small, and it plays at least some kind of role in what the music will sound like, the reason Radioheads musical style is so disperate is because they have a disperate amount of influences, if they only had just one big influence, you would have noticed.

And all i ever said was that Nirvana were a influence, not one of their biggest influences or one of their most important, you guys are taking what i said way out of context.

radiohead is so awesome it took over the nirvana thread, heh.

can someone explain to me how nirvana was going back to their "indie roots" when the released in utero, and 4 songs get radio play? i think it's a decent album but it still sounds like the all their other listener friendly crap to me. the lyrics are a little too nihilistic and bleak for some of their poppy audience but other than that what's different?

The production for one thing, it lacks the glossy sound of Nevermind, it's much more lo-fi... Less bass, more guitar, more fuzz and feedback, and a much more agressive and noise oriented sound than Nevermind... The lyrics are better as well.

Cobain thought Nevermind came out too well produced, and that he wanted to revive a more primitive sound similar to what he achieved with Bleach.

And i would say that most of the album isn't listener friendly, at least not most of the tracks aside from the singles.

Also indie bands can get radio play too, Float On is a big mainstream radio hit.
