I love the Kinks, but when listening though Village Green recently for the first time in years, it struck me what a dull and weak album it is. It has nothing interesting going on musically, and it's frightening to think that Ray Davies actually appear to be serious in his ridiculous "old Blighty" idealisation in the lyrics. It's their weakest release of the 60s as far as I'm concerned, and yet people are saying it's their best. Mental.

I like 'Village Green', but I think their true masterpiece is "Lola vs Powerman and the Moneygoround". It's an absolutely brilliant record. |
kink kronikles is a great compilation, full of singles not previously available on album like days, willesden green, did u see his name, god's children etc.

Just a light heartheart Ray Davis... PARIS 1965 good interesting interview etc..36 mins worth Interview 'imaginery man' if you like reading about the people here then you could enjoy all or some as it is well over an hour of video |
Please check if a thread already exists before making a new one
That being said, thanks bringing attention to Ray Davies' birthday, I love the Kinks very much. I've been listening to this one a lot lately |

saw this link because my first job was in Saviile Row, it looked pretty interesting to see stuff around London/Kinks... |
I grew up loving The Kinks: first, the riff on those early singles, then the surprising developments of Ray as a songwriter, from See My Friend and beyond, then the slow realisation that Ray's special talent was the celebration of all things English.
Thanks, ribbons, for posting this short mysterious gem which I had forgotten about:- Quote:
And although I don't like their later stuff so much, Victoria surely gives us in advance Ray's epitaph:- I was born, lucky me In a land that I love |
